Day 597: The Big Day by Chance The Rapper
It's WAY too long, preachy and there are some hilarious missteps, but it's definitely nowhere near as bad as melon alleged. Sad that this guy has fallen so far from the days of Acid Rap but other than a few hilarious tracks, this is really just aggressively mediocre. How the fuck can you equate this to Speedin Bullet 2 Heaven? Best Track: Roo I guess Rating: 3/10 |

Day 600: Case Study 01 by Daniel Caesar
A lot of these songs sound like The Internet but with male vocals. The best songs are the ones that sound like The Internet but with male vocals. The other songs range from middling and forgettable to decent. Overall though, I like this album, it's not mindblowing or anything but it's very solid. Melon can go choke on a rind. Day 601: Full Upon Her Burning Lips by Earth (Album Choice: aperson)
Continuing the trend of going back to artists I haven't checked new shit from in years! I've always preferred older Earth, specifically Pentastar: In the Style of Demons and the famous album over their newer sound, but it's pleasant enough. This album is quite literally exactly what I'd expect from modern day Dylan Carlson. It's drone-y, but not NEARLY as drone-y as their earliest works with every song containing actual riffs. That being said, the whole thing is still incredibly minimalistic, sticking to one desert-esque vibe with seemingly seamless tracks and mostly consisting of only guitar, guitar feedback and slow, brooding drums. Bass occasionally. It's pleasant to listen to, and it works very well as study music, but outside of that, I'm failing to see what this album accomplishes that wasn't already done about equally (not necessarily better or worse!) than The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull. I hear that the two or three most recent albums prior to this one contained more deviations to the Earth style with middling results, so if you listened to those and didn't like em, this has what you want. For the sake of comparison, I went back and listened to a few cuts from that aforementioned album about sweet tasting head bones and the main difference is that this newer album is warmer, the riffs seem to vary a tiny little bit more within songs and the whole thing is FAR less reliant on reverb. Reverb is still here, it's just not super overwhelming anymore. In that sense, this newer one is probably the more enjoyable of the two, and this seems like it'd be killer to get lost in live. I wonder if this dude has actually tried datura, because if he has what the fuck Best Track: Datura's Crimson Veils Rating: 6/10 |

Day 602: I Know You Like It by Shinichiro Yokota
My immediate point of comparison is Octo Octa. I feel like there are some classic deep house records I should actually be comparing this to but I'm illiterate in life. This definitely contains a lot more movement within the songs than anything I've heard from Octo Octa, more obvious samples are present, and there's a lot more emphasis on the higher frequencies here. None of this changes my opinion on the music. I just don't like this as much as For Lovers or Where Are We Going? anOH SHIT SHE RELEASES A NEW ALBUM A WEEK BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY FUCK YEAH Anyways, back to this album. The grooves are good, but a select few of these tracks honestly come off as a bit cheesy to me, almost like it's trying too hard to keep a throwback vibe around. This doesn't affect the majority of the album, but I think this would've been better at, like, two-thirds the length with some of the less enjoyable tracks cut, usually the ones with more clutter (did I just contradict myself? Who gives a fat flying pigfuck) although it's hard to call anything cluttered here. It still gets a pretty good rating because minimalism like this is my fucking JAM at the dead of night. Day 603: ANIMA by Thom Yorke
something something /mu/ something something RateYourMusic something something FUCK U SHARIFI something something white hipsters something something sounds vaguely like Kid A something something most overrated band of all time something something lazy eye something something Space Ghost I remember back when I actively listened to Sufjan Stevens I thought his electronic album (The Age Of Adz, not any of that early bullshit) was highly overrated, but I enjoyed it because he was trying something new. Tommyboy here doesn't get to say that. This is overrated. This is boring. Maybe I just haven't listened to it enough, in fact this is the first time in a while I'm only listening to the album ONCE, but enough people have heard this and jacked off onto it that I don't feel like relistening to it any time soon. What makes this special? The guy's musical prowess seems to have barely made any change since Kid A! It's not BAD, but I'm really failing to see how this is one of the best albums of the year. This is slightly warmer than that album and Amnesiac, less warm and also less repetitive than The King Of Limbs, and probably only slightly less overrated than all three of those albums. To be frank I haven't been thoroughly impressed with any of his band's work since In Rainbows and I haven't listened to much else of his solo work, and this doesn't make me feel like seeking out more of his solo work. I realize that it's shitty and useless to compare an album to the other works of the artist, and it's even shittier and more useless to compare an album to the hype, but suck my dick I just wanted to cross this off my year list. Also, stealing a title from Boards of Canada is fine but when your song isn't even half as good as theirs it rings slightly insulting. Best Track: I Am A Very Rude Person Rating: 5/10 |

Day 604: CALIGULA by LINGUA IGNOTA
Charts charts charts. There's some gorgeous moments and some absolutely terrifying moments, and a lot of boring moments that do absolutely nothing for me. Also, it's not good study music. I guess I'm too basic. Best Track: I AM THE BEAST Rating: 5.5/10 |

Day 605: GINGER by BROCKHAMPTON
You know I was gonna be on this fast because even if I'm not nearly as hype for their new releases these days I still love a huge portion of those SATURATION songs. This... eh. I'm not sure if it's better or worse than Iridescence. They seem to be leaning more heavily into their "boy band" image than ever before and that's not what I came to them for really. Actually yeah, this is definitely worse than Iridescence and after such a wait that is a damn shame. I don't get it, when they dropped 3 albums in one year they had more consistency. I don't want to believe the loss of Ameer affected them that much considering he always felt out of place, was kind of boring in many songs due to his repetition and those 1997-1999 singles were fucking fire, but the magic is mostly gone minus a few cuts here. I think they have some great work left in them as a collective, but mostly I'm just waiting for the inevitable solo album from JOBA and Merlyn's trap blow-up whenever that happens. Best Track: ST. PERCY Rating: 5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2019 albums halp
Day 606: So Much Fun by Young Thug
I hate the majority of the features on this album, yet they mostly work in the context of their songs, although it seems nothing can make Nav not suck ass. This thing being over an hour long feels excessive, but I've practically come to expect that of most trap releases. Other than that, once again, not much I can say, you know how this is gonna sound. It's at least a little bit more consistent than Beautiful Thugger Girls, but I don't think that's saying all too much. Just... trim it down man. Please, trim it down. Best Track: Mannequin Challenge (wow I like a Juice WRLD song am I incel now?) Rating: 6/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2019 albums halp
Day 607: King's Mouth: Music and Songs by The Flaming Lips
There's a couple good cuts here, but there's nothing really "wow" here except maybe the closer, and the whole thing reeks of just, like, coasting on what people expect. It's not bad, it's not good, it's just uninspiring. I expect better from Drozd. I haven't heard of Wayne Coyne getting into any stupid controversy recently, but I will bet $500 on his crackhead ass showing up with him and his new mid-20s popstar girlfriend in blackface within the next decade. Best Track: How Can A Head Rating: 5/10 |

Day 608: Nocebo by Elizabeth Colour Wheel
On the other hand, this shit is fucking fantastic for at least 2 baked listens and 1 sober listen. A couple annoying moments but never for even the majority of the song and the beautiful and the energizing parts (usually seperate) more than make up for it for me. Best Track: Hide Behind (Emmett's Song) Rating: 8.5/10 |

Day 609: Animated Violence Mild by Blanck Mass
I thought I reviewed a Blanck Mass album here before, but apparently I never did. I've definitely listened to World Eater multiple times, but I forgot to leave a rating and haven't listened to it in a while. I remember it being, like, a 7. This is, like, the same thing. Feels very much like a progression from that album, without striking me as immediately better or worse... This whole comparison is flawed because I'm too lazy to check that album again. Oh well. This album's decent, and like I THINK World Eater was I find it more consistent than the Fuck Buttons albums I've listened to. Funny album title. Best Track: House vs. House Rating: 7/10 |

Day 610: Norman Fucking Rockwell by Lana Del Rey
Like I said before, the 5 year anniversary special is still being worked on! At the rate I'm working it'll be lucky to be a 5.5 year anniversary special, but to be honest do you care? Who reads these things? And what I have planned is peak self-indulgence so really, it's obvious that just like this thread I'm doing this for myself. But stay tuned, the two of you who check this thread, for the special surprise I have planned! Anyways, I haven't listened to a Lana album since Ultraviolence. I remember how she went from some kinda Pitchfork hype to melon backlash to slowly regaining respect and now apparently she's /mu/bae again? Whatever, the strange thing is is that I still enjoy Ultraviolence which coincides with Fantano's angriest moments. I pull it out less than once per year, fair, but it definitely is a fun, fun album full of cheese and pomp. I described it as sounding like "a made-for-TV collaboration between early David Lynch and John Waters" and I stand by that... god I miss Puerto Rico. Where has the time gone? Anyways, this album is good, but I don't like it as much. It's comparatively very subdued, with a whole lotta tracks of just pure piano ballads. The first 5 or so tracks are great, but eventually it just turns into WAY too many ballads over and over again. Are they bad? No! Do they get boring in such abundance? Yes! Cut this down to, like, two-thirds or less and it'd be a great album. Nonetheless, I will probably return to this once in a damn while, because when it's on, it's ON. Day 611: Guerilla Toss by Guerilla Toss
Here's an album I listened to years ago, never rated and forgot, then decided to listen to again. It seems like the band disowned everything pre-pre-Gay Disco and took it off Bandcamp, and that's a damn shame because this blows everything that came after out the water. Whyd they try to go pop?
