[Pack Release] Nightflower Complex

Click on the banner or this download link to download the pack.

Welcome to the Nightflower Complex. Enjoy the view of nocturnal flowers here. Or not. We don't care. Just don't come here when there's daylight.
(Flower Night Complex is also a perfectly acceptable reading of this)

Nightflower Complex is a pack of 15 charts that I've made from February 2021 to June 2021 (with the exception of Shuu no Hazama/Rainshower, which was made in November 2020), MSD difficulty range of 18 to 25 (though mostly in the 19-23 range). You can expect a mixture of drum and bass, breakcore, metal, and some odd tracks in-between. There is a general theme of the music in this being mostly dark and grungy, but there are some pretty clear exceptions to the rule (e.g. Nanamori).

Like my other packs, most of the charts in this pack are fairly straightforward in rhythmic structure. However, a good portion of them would be categorised more as jumpstream rather than technical, since the bulk of those charts' difficulties come from jumpstream in some form or another. Some of the charts in the pack are also straight jumpstream. There are, however, still some very technical charts in the pack, like Aqua Regia, Brainfog, or Ideal Ratio. There are no explicitly "dumpy" charts in the pack, so there is no use of the pink CDTitle here.

No chart descriptions because no one really reads them anymore and Etterna has a chart preview function that everyone should use.

Songlist:

During this time period, I decided to focus a lot more on how players process and hit patterns -- how players can find certain patterns comfortable or uncomfortable, what kind of muscles they use to hit certain patterns, and so on. I moved away from a more systematic approach to charting (most prominently seen in We Are The Sound and Breakcore Princess to a smaller degree) and utilised a slightly more freeform approach to layering/patterning with the most emphasis on the most perceptible sounds and rhythms that players will hear. This led to some interesting results, and it overall led to charts that I felt were more in line with both I perceive music and how I want my charts to play. The approach is still a work in progress, and I hope that the charts in this pack are indicative of an approach that will be more worthwhile in the future.

The development of this pack is a bit strange, and initially it wasn't supposed to be a thing in the first place. A good portion of these charts were initially made for my collaboration pack with AlexDest, but I felt that, because I was still experimenting in charting approach in this time period, it's better for me to release this pack and make (hopefully better) charts for the collab pack instead.

I also made this pack while I was making my other pack (Sharpnel Instrumentality Project), which focused entirely on jumpstream, so I ended up making a few more jumpstream (or JS-adjacent) charts for this pack to see if the approach works for music outside of j-core. This also applies for non-JS charts -- there are some concepts that I've picked up from charting just jumpstream, and I wanted to see if the same principles can be applied to more technical charts. Regardless, there are still charts that I've made before starting the Sharpnel pack, and it does show (in my opinion) in some of them (e.g. Aqua Regia and 12 little fragments).

The pack's title, along with the banner that this pack is accompanied with, is based on Ghost in the Shell. The title of the pack is supposed to roll off the tongue the same way that "Stand Alone Complex" does. In addition to the industrial and harsh overtones that most of these songs have, I feel that the overall gritty and relatively "freeform" charting approach fit the general dystopian cyberpunk themes of GitS. I'll be making an effort to make my packs be based on certain things that are important to me in the future, with Sharpnel Instrumentality Project and this pack being the first two of (hopefully) many.

Credits:
- stupud man/Elah for the banner
- heather for letting me use her artwork for Axle Grinder, Bleed The Fifth, Ideal Ratio, The Last Striker, and What A Horrible Night. You can check out her work here.
- Izzz for letting me use her artwork for Prism and Gate and REGRET PART TWO. You can check out her work here.
- aperson for giving comprehensive feedback for the entire pack!!! i owe you one
- VisD and various others for giving comprehensive feedback on Aqua Regia
- Jole, Lethal, AlexDest, Pizza69, LeftyRighty, and stupud man/Elah for heavily playtesting this pack, along with various others for trying my charts while I was making this pack in general

The sister pack (Sharpnel Instrumentality Project, a JS-only pack) will be released when I have graphics for every chart in the pack. This pack has been both a rewarding and frustrating experience for me, but I hope that players will enjoy the charts that will come out of those experiences all the same.

that is an oddly specific quest but if that's what drives simfile creation then so be it
