Day 900: World Famous Tour by Wavedash

Checking out the people who are opening for Anamanaguchi when I see them this Sunday besides CFCF (who is the artist I'm most hyped for by far). I expected this album to suck, and for a good chunk of it, it did. But some of the tracks, particularly the opener and a good chunk of the back half, were surprisingly quite good! The rest is corny bullshit that'll definitely be fun to dance to but makes for lame headphone work listening.

Day 901: Colors II by Between The Buried and Me (Album Choice: Deadlyx39)

I saw Injury Reserve last night and it was fucking INSANE and gave me a newfound appreciation for their latest album when I listened to it again last night, gonna bump that to an 8. Also I adored Slauson Malone's performance, but it was ridiculously avant-garde and the crowd blatantly hated it, which made my inner contrarian enjoy it even more.

Also, I've listened to this album 3 times over the past week and I enjoyed it but it really is just way too long. But I rarely like wanky progressive stuff so the fact that I enjoyed it is already impressive. Is it as good as Colors One? No. But it's still pretty good.

3 3s in a row! What's the jackpot?

I know for a fact David that you only recommended this one because you're thirsty as fuck for her, but this album wasn't bad. It wasn't amazing either. A perfectly pleasant but uninspiring listen throughout, with the exception of one song that bordered on Drum and Bass.

Day 908: LP! by JPEGMAFIA

This is like an in-between of the styles of Veteran and the last album he dropped. This is better than Cornballs but not better than Veteran. I'm writing this review from work because I listened to this album 3 times during work. You know damn well whether or not you're gonna listen to this, and you know damn well that my opinion isn't a guarantee of whether or not you'll like this.

I wonder if I made the right decision skipping this live show to see Skrillex and Wax Motif instead.

Day 911: Sensational by Erika de Casier

This is a pretty good album, pleasant throughout, short enough to rarely get boring to me and good performance throughout. It's lacking a certain oomph though that stops it from being great to me and I don't know why. Stylistically, this is NOTHING like Lianne La Havas but that's the closest vibe I can think of that I actually absolutely adored. Comparisons are stupid.

Day 912: Civilisation by Kero Kero Bonito (Album Choice: my old roommate)

I never liked this band, but the singer's guest appearance on the latest CFCF album was absolutely divine. Before listening to this I listened to the sequel EP, which had two decent tracks and a wild closer. This album is pretty good! I'm surprised how much I like it, it feels like a tribute to 16-bit gaming in a way.

So for fun I decided to go back and try out Bonito Generation again and holy fuck this is still terrible. Oh well, still hoping they're a lot of fun live.

Can't say anything contrarian about this one, it's really good, short, sweet and all killer. I hate Bruno Mars and want better Asian representation in music than him (and the other people I can think of like Rich Brian and Joji are way, way, way worse) so I'ma give all the credit to my man Anderson Paak for this being as good as it is.

Also not as good as their other album from this year, although several tracks bang, especially in the middle. WAYYYY too fucking long, only memoryland this year has justified its asinine ass long length out of any album I've bumped.

I came into this one expecting to be bored to tears, but actually it was quite fun! A little overlong in my opinion and definitely wanky, but the riffs here are mostly pretty sick. This isn't a subgenre of metal I know super well which means that this is probably pretty accessible to what a metal snob would call a "plebian" and it's up to you to tell yourself if that's a good or bad thing.

Day 942: Laurel Hell by Mitski

Someone told me not to listen to this because apparently Mitski is known to be a huge asshole in the NYC DIY scene but I hadn't heard that from any other sources. Also I've definitely listened to music from much more objectionable people unless she's a secret Asian Nazi like Tila Tequila or something.

I loved Be The Cowboy when it came out but I find it's an album I don't replay too much outside of a few tracks like A Pearl. This album is entirely stylistically different, leaving behind the country-tinged chamber pop of that album for more 80s styled synth pop. Personally? I like this a lot more, but we'll see if it stands up to repeat listens.

Oh yeah, obviously this is NOT the album I was implying I would review next, but this is convenient enough to listen to on Spotify whereas that album is annoying to listen to outside of a home setting on YouTube.

Day 945: Equinox by Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66

I've heard at least half the songs on this album before in random playlists (and obviously there's the ITG stamina chart) but this was my first time listening to this in full in order. I listened to it twice on loop while dragging a 40 pound sack of laundry almost a mile from my bus stop to my sister's place because she has an in-unit washer and dryer. For that scenario, this music was oddly perfect. And it's pretty gorgeous stuff to my ears.

Day 946: Ants From Up There by Black Country, New Road

I don't get it, why is everyone on music internet obsessed with this band? What makes them special? This stuff isn't awful like 100 gecs where I can at least see the unique appeal of that scene (and I like some other hyperpop), this is just boring crescendocore that other equally boring bands have been making for decades. There's nothing special about this. Day 952: Un hiver en plein été by Félicia Atkinson & Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (Album Choice: an NYC buddy, kinda)

I'm likely gonna see the two of these live at a church with some friends in a couple of weeks so I decided to bump this. This is way less minimalistic than everything else I've heard from Jefre, and I don't think it actually qualifies as drone. It's pretty but I can't say I was amazed by it. Maybe it'll translate better live.

Day 953: Classic Objects by Jenny Hval

I recognize this name because this person guested on one of Kelly Lee Owens' albums. I forget which.

And this album is good. The long songs seem a bit TOO long but not by too much and the whole thing is a pleasant, dreamy listen front-to-back. It's a bit less airy and breathy than Owens, with lyrics occasionally bordering on John Darnielle levels of verbosity, but either way this was an enjoyable album for the entire duration. For multiple listens.

Day 954: Melt My Eyez See Your Future by Denzel Curry

I'm surprised people are liking this a lot more than ZUU, it's more ambitious, sure, but it lacks the energy or the fun of his last two albums. It's not bad, it's still good, just probably my least favorite of his in years.

Day 955: Crash by Charli XCX (Album Choice: it's the great hyperpop fandom, Charlie Brown)

I'm beginning to question my sexuality bc of my fandom of this artist.

Actually, never mind, I'm almost certainly bi. Who cares? I'd rather be a bisexual POC than a hetero white guy or a LGBTQIA+ white guy. Really I'm just glad I'm not white so fuck y'all.

Anyways, the virginal caucasian internet music nerds seem to be calling this a massive disappointment. Why? I don't understand. This is certainly not as good as How I'm Feeling Now but it kicks the shit out of any other stuff I've heard from her. It's not got the quote-unquote complexity or experimentation of some of her more recent works, but what it does have is FUN. Almost every track on this album would make for a great party/rave track to play on the dance floor. The beats she chooses are dance-y, rave-y, and varied enough in the different types of entry-level EDM vibes she chooses for backing tracks. I would 100% go nuts if half of these played at a party. Fun > whatever those /mu/-reading idiots value in an artist like this.

Day 956: Aethiopes by Billy Woods (Album Rec: I forgot tbh)

I listened to this three times, I enjoyed it to some degree, appreciated it was short, but... y'know I'm starting to realize that my favorite stuff in hip-hop is what a lot of people think of as "lowest common denominator" shit. Maybe I'm just dumb. Maybe I'm just hungover.

(okay, favorite outside of a good chunk of 90s shit bc cmon I'm Asian the Wu shaped my middle-high years, that will ALWAYS be my favorite)

But yeah still good, don't see it making a top 10 for me though.

Chops I love you, but I only enjoyed about half this album. Sorry bro. :(

Day 958: Motomati by Rosalía

Serious downgrade from her last album. Now to go find something else to listen to. I hate my life. I don't deserve love.

At least it's a fun album at times.

Day 959: Diaspora Problems by Soul Glo (Album Choice: _case_)

I thought I wasn't gonna like this, but I actually did! A lot of good raucous cuts that made me wanna go to another punk show, and there were some moments here and there that made me cringe a bit, but damnit this was just pure aggressive fun for the most part. I'm surprised.

Also, is this band cancelled? I have no idea I remembering hearing some drama about them. Anyways, I need to go visit my Amherst friends and go to another basement punk show, this album is hitting me with nostalgia.

Day 960: Together by Duster

This was fairly enjoyable, I expected to be bored by it but I found it to be decent. It got a bit repetitive and the atmosphere was pretty much the EXACT same throughout the entire LP but I guess that was the point?

I need to relisten to their old albums and see how they compare. Okay back to work.

Day 961: It's Almost Dry by Pusha T

Listened to it thrice. Then listened to Daytona again. That one was better but this is still decent I suppose, lacks a bit of the punch that one had.

Day 962: Everything Was Beautiful by Spiritualized

You know the one album they're most famous for. I actually like that album, call me a basic bitch I don't care, that one is a bit too long but it NAILS the atmosphere it's going for outside of a few cuts.

This one, on the other hand, was some boring paint-by-numbers shit. Whatever influences they tried to add, they just made themselves sound worse.

1000 coming up soon...

Day 963: Lp.8 by Kelly Lee Owens

This album has 9 tracks and this is her third LP. What gives with the title?

I'm inherently biased towards this artist and I think I've made that pretty clear, but I have to admit, I think this is her weakest album yet. This one leans a lot less on the pop side, like a WHOLE lot less, and vocals are sparser than ever before. I still enjoyed this quite a bit, but I wish there were more tracks like Re-Wild, L.I.N.E or Keep Walking and that this album leaned less towards the ambient side and more towards the pop side.

Still, def one of the best concerts I saw in 2021 and I'd be hyped to see her again.

Best Track: One
