What is your go-to album or albums?

I'm talking about the shit you listen to when nothing else will do the trick. You've listened to this album 86 times and counting, it's always there to fall back on in your time of musical need.

My two are:
Converting Vegetarians II by Infected Mushroom
The Black Parade by MCR

Re: What is your go-to album or albums?

tbh I still haven't heard the black parade, even tho recently it seems like a lot of people have started considering it a classic? maybe not recently but from what I've seen, people are starting to appreciate it more and more.

celer - discourses of the withered
autechre - confield
william basinski - melancholia

all 10/10s imo. discourses of the withered is celer's best work and one of the best drone albums, period. confield is idm at it's most potent and progressive. and melancholia has some really great memories associated with it.

EzExZeRo7497 09-30-2019 11:11 AM

Re: What is your go-to album or albums?

alphabetical order:
36 - Memories in Widescreen
Alva Noto - Xerrox Vol. 3
Bark Psychosis - Hex
Belong - October Language
Celer - Discourses of the Withered
Jefre Cantu-Ledesma - Love Is a Stream
Steve Roach - Darkest Before Dawn
Totorro - All Glory to John Baltor
Robert Rich - Somnium
William Basinski - A Red Score in Tile
William Basinski - Melancholia
Yodaka - Betrayal and Reincarnation

I get alienated really easily, so a lot of the albums listed feel lonely, melancholic, or meditative to some degree. The only album that wouldn't fit the aforementioned three descriptors is Hex, and Hex, to me, is the prettiest album that I've listened to. I usually listen to it in the afternoon when I don't feel too bad.

I used to listen to a few other albums regularly too (Kashiwa Daisuke's 88 and Program Music I, 2814's Birth of a New Day), but I don't listen to them anywhere as often as I used to these days.

edit: nice picks choof

My go-to changes with the wind these days but I would go with Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 85-92. It's sort of like a musical ground state for me, like visiting an old comforting friend.

My two are both "listen to these songs in order or else you're a bastard" albums, so it's basically like a 2 hour song when I listen to them.

PixlSM 09-30-2019 04:57 PM

Re: What is your go-to album or albums?

the only excuse to not be listening exclusively to full albums in order is if you are listening to classical/jazz or dance music.
otherwise you arent actually listening to music and your brain is just pretending to hear sounds that arent actually entering your ears correctly

axith 09-30-2019 06:04 PM

Re: What is your go-to album or albums?

My work day consists of several 30+ minute drives, so I get full album listens in often. Here's several I've listened to a couple times in the last 2 weeks in no order.

The Inheritors - James Holden
Koda Vista - Joywave
L.O.W. - Jan Roth
Head Hunters - Herbie Hancock
Jessica Rabbit - Sleigh bells
Tres hombres - ZZ Top
Wavering Radiant - Isis
Twoism - Boards of Canada
Canto Ostinato for two pianos and two marimbas - Simeon ten Holt

I guess I did buy the album

Snarky Puppy - We Like It Here

At a concert, but I still end up youtubing individual tracks when I want to listen to one. I otherwise don't think I've -owned- in any form, a full album of -anything- since I was a teenager.

I think "warrant" isn't the right word to use here.

Almost all the ambient stuff listed up there are my anxiety meds - I spent fully 18-20 hours cooped up at a friends place after bad stuff happened, listening to Stealth on repeat, basically sleeping at will

It was a really weird experience because I wasn't high or anything, the music is just that soporific

Re: What is your go-to album or albums?

Lots of good picks here!

Whenever I need to focus on a work related task, my magical album is Fallen by Evanescence. Don't ask me why, it always does the trick! I guess it puts me in a complete state of dread where I don't fear the consequences of doing a "bad job", so I just start executing.

When I actually want to listen to music, albums from Neal Morse really make me feel at ease (in particular, Question Mark, similitude of a dream, sola scriptura)

And I have to give a shoutout to In the Court of the Crimson King, the album that just keeps on giving.

I really want to list so many more albums, damn. Music is such a gift.

Pretty much the magnum opus of the best & most well-produced bass music trio ever

The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II
IMO the most underrated hiphop album out there... Deserves to be up there with 36 Chambers, Low End Theory, etc. They did many things on this album 30 years ago that I haven't heard since

Jacob Collier's whole discography
If there's a musical prodigy alive in 2020, it's Jacob Collier... Knows basically everything about music theory, mastered like 30 instruments, 6 octave vocal range. Lovely blend of r&b, folk, and pop

Daft Punk - Discovery
No explanation needed

Ok, I'll be that guy and say the Ridge Race R4 Soundtrack.

Shit's cool and always puts me in a better mood.

For real adult albums I'll probably always be down to listen to Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It's both a highly overrated and underrated album, if that makes sense, but I've always liked it.

EDIT: Since someone mentioned Fallen, there was a time where I absolutely would have named The Open Door my favorite album. I still think it's a decent listen, but probably wouldn't preach about it.
