Day 579: Symphony No. 3: Symphony of Sorrowful Songs, Op. 36 by Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra / Krzysztof Penderecki / Beth Gibbons

I dunno how to review classical shit man. It's good, and the singer is especially talented, moreso knowing the preparations she had to go under, but the only sentence that repeated in my mind as I listened multiple times was "I'd like this more without the damn singing". Kinda hinders my ability to get lost in the atmosphere.

That and for some reason I was expecting something less elegant and more experimental (like the phenomenal opener when I saw Billy Basinski live) because I'm dumb. For what it is, the composition is great and the instrumentation really sucks you into the aura... I just don't like the vocals because I'm a total fuckin dilettante.

I need a job.

Day 581: Cuz I Love You by Lizzo

I saw Lizzo (not bold then bold immediately after, how fun) back when Boston Calling was at city hall in 2015. Granted, I was quite far away because I was maintaining my front row spot at the other stage, and I remember remarkably little of this performance.

This album is making me regret not paying more attention. It's not flawless, some touches seem out of place on their tracks, particularly features (what the fuck is Gucci doing on this album lol and the Missy Elliott track is probably the worst on the album regardless of whether or not that's her fault), but this is a DAMN good album. Reminds me of 70s soul mixed with modern hip-hop/neo-soul trends and some of the most incredibly bombastic production I've ever heard, molded down into pop perfection, and DAMN can she sing. Yeah, some tracks I could give or take (that single aforementioned track and Soulmate come to mind) but this is mostly hits.

Wait, the Missy Elliott track was a single? The fuck?

Good way to start my solo NYC backpacking trip. I hope just the right amount of crazy happens because this got me in a better mood. Too bad whatever album I choose next won't have quite the same effect.

Day 582: The Beast You Are by Big Business

Saw em in 2017. Still love Here Comes The Waterworks and enjoy the debut, but haven't really checked much beyond. This album is basically tell me that was the right decision. This isn't bad, it's just perfectly average and feels more like traditional heavy metal, maybe with some sludge influences, than the murk and grind I'm used to from this band.

Disappointing. I'd still see em again though.

Day 584: Guns by Quelle Chris

This one's been getting a lot of hype. I haven't really delved into conscious hip-hop much recently, but it very much was my gateway into the genre back when I first started this challenge, as embarrassing as that might be to admit.

Speaking of that, check back here if you're one of the three people who reads this for a special retrospective coming some time in the next few weeks to celebrate 5 years of wasting my time filling this thread! 6 counting the first thread!

Anyways, I've bumped this like 10 times now and still have very little to say. I love the beats, and dude has some good bars, but his rather same-y delivery is... well, it's definitely intentional and it colors the album well, but it gets old. Really, this album is clearly about lyrics first, beats second, delivery third, and on the first two it absolutely delivers. I just haven't unpacked it enough yet. Will revisit before the end of the year (how many times have I said "will revisit"?)

Day 585: Dedicated by Carly Rae Jepsen

I really, really, really, really, really, really like I Really Like You. But besides that, this is yet another basic hipster bro touchstone I've mostly avoided for reasons I'm not even sure of. When that one wonder hit came out back in middle school, I hated it. I remember pre-EMOTION (I refuse to format that title correctly) her tickets were at $25, then the hipster reappraisal happened and now they're back at half of 2011 prices (which is close to $100 average). I listened to that 2015 album when it came out and ultimately felt I didn't get it (besides the song about liking you) and never revisited it. Back then I didn't feel I was gonna relisten and didn't feel a quality enough review, oh how the times have changes!

Anyways, to ramble on, this is well-made pop, she's good at making some absolutely infectious hooks, and almost all of this has a nice modern EDM tinge that I really like. Where the album falters is... well, maybe it's not fair to call it faltering but this album is a bit too subdued on average for my tastes. I was looking for explosions of sugar but this feels like Ms. 33-year-old-teen is trying to make a more "serious" album, so to speak? And I understand her desire to be a more "respected" art musician (some of these tracks somehow come off as... weird? Idk) but goddamnit I need more sucrose injections in these ears! Give me EDM backing tracks I can club to! Where are the twee-as-fuck lyrics? It's good, I just wish it was more bombastic and blissfully unashamed. The former isn't something I often want but fuck it I'm tired.

I wrote this whole thing sleep deprived on a plane btw. And guess what... yeah I'm gonna REVISIT this album later man fuck this

Day 587: Arrival by Fire! Orchestra

The majority of this review is gonna be comparing this to Exit!, which is the worst kind of review, and this is even worse because I'm ignoring Enter because I completely forget my opinion on it ayyy lmfao. But anyways, this doesn't really have the same energetic highs of that album, but it never slogs the way the back half of it did. There's more variance to things than I imagined, I found myself enjoying the long pieces and the short pieces equally, and that closer was a real surprise for this band! Almost sounded like slowcore or something but obviously still pretty far, nevertheless that was cathartic and gorgeous. The opening duo, especially the opening track though, those are also highlights, bordering on post-rock while still remaining detectably Fire!. Speaking of which, this is obviously for a different mood than She Sleeps, She Sleeps but I think I like both equally.

The only real misstep is the mid-section of Silver Trees. Other than that, this is phenomenally consistent for a 66 minute album, of a genre that I'm not much a connoisseur of to add to that (so if you disagree with my take, keep that in mind!). Good shit.

Funny addendum is that I played this the first time just through my laptop speakers and my mom kept complaining about the "horrible demonic noises" and whatnot, paraphrasing here but you get the drift.

The BoyBoy West Coast definitely had the better meme song. Almost nothing else here sounds like Old Town Road, with dude instead taking an eclectic approach to things. Unfortunately, most of this is just weak Travis Scott knockoffs and cringy bad rap rock that vaguely sounds like Kid Cudi. Panini and Rodeo are decent, but even the latter is entirely carried by Cardi B. Also why are there two Old Town Roads what the fuck

Day 601: Full Upon Her Burning Lips by Earth (Album Choice: aperson)

Continuing the trend of going back to artists I haven't checked new shit from in years! I've always preferred older Earth, specifically Pentastar: In the Style of Demons and the famous album over their newer sound, but it's pleasant enough. This album is quite literally exactly what I'd expect from modern day Dylan Carlson. It's drone-y, but not NEARLY as drone-y as their earliest works with every song containing actual riffs. That being said, the whole thing is still incredibly minimalistic, sticking to one desert-esque vibe with seemingly seamless tracks and mostly consisting of only guitar, guitar feedback and slow, brooding drums. Bass occasionally.

It's pleasant to listen to, and it works very well as study music, but outside of that, I'm failing to see what this album accomplishes that wasn't already done about equally (not necessarily better or worse!) than The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull. I hear that the two or three most recent albums prior to this one contained more deviations to the Earth style with middling results, so if you listened to those and didn't like em, this has what you want. For the sake of comparison, I went back and listened to a few cuts from that aforementioned album about sweet tasting head bones and the main difference is that this newer album is warmer, the riffs seem to vary a tiny little bit more within songs and the whole thing is FAR less reliant on reverb. Reverb is still here, it's just not super overwhelming anymore. In that sense, this newer one is probably the more enjoyable of the two, and this seems like it'd be killer to get lost in live.

I wonder if this dude has actually tried datura, because if he has what the fuck

Day 602: I Know You Like It by Shinichiro Yokota

My immediate point of comparison is Octo Octa. I feel like there are some classic deep house records I should actually be comparing this to but I'm illiterate in life. This definitely contains a lot more movement within the songs than anything I've heard from Octo Octa, more obvious samples are present, and there's a lot more emphasis on the higher frequencies here. None of this changes my opinion on the music. I just don't like this as much as For Lovers or Where Are We Going? anOH SHIT SHE RELEASES A NEW ALBUM A WEEK BEFORE MY BIRTHDAY FUCK YEAH

Anyways, back to this album. The grooves are good, but a select few of these tracks honestly come off as a bit cheesy to me, almost like it's trying too hard to keep a throwback vibe around. This doesn't affect the majority of the album, but I think this would've been better at, like, two-thirds the length with some of the less enjoyable tracks cut, usually the ones with more clutter (did I just contradict myself? Who gives a fat flying pigfuck) although it's hard to call anything cluttered here.

It still gets a pretty good rating because minimalism like this is my fucking JAM at the dead of night.

Day 603: ANIMA by Thom Yorke

something something /mu/ something something RateYourMusic something something FUCK U SHARIFI something something white hipsters something something sounds vaguely like Kid A something something most overrated band of all time something something lazy eye something something Space Ghost

I remember back when I actively listened to Sufjan Stevens I thought his electronic album (The Age Of Adz, not any of that early bullshit) was highly overrated, but I enjoyed it because he was trying something new. Tommyboy here doesn't get to say that. This is overrated. This is boring. Maybe I just haven't listened to it enough, in fact this is the first time in a while I'm only listening to the album ONCE, but enough people have heard this and jacked off onto it that I don't feel like relistening to it any time soon. What makes this special? The guy's musical prowess seems to have barely made any change since Kid A! It's not BAD, but I'm really failing to see how this is one of the best albums of the year. This is slightly warmer than that album and Amnesiac, less warm and also less repetitive than The King Of Limbs, and probably only slightly less overrated than all three of those albums. To be frank I haven't been thoroughly impressed with any of his band's work since In Rainbows and I haven't listened to much else of his solo work, and this doesn't make me feel like seeking out more of his solo work.

I realize that it's shitty and useless to compare an album to the other works of the artist, and it's even shittier and more useless to compare an album to the hype, but suck my dick I just wanted to cross this off my year list. Also, stealing a title from Boards of Canada is fine but when your song isn't even half as good as theirs it rings slightly insulting.

Day 605: GINGER by BROCKHAMPTON

You know I was gonna be on this fast because even if I'm not nearly as hype for their new releases these days I still love a huge portion of those SATURATION songs. This... eh. I'm not sure if it's better or worse than Iridescence. They seem to be leaning more heavily into their "boy band" image than ever before and that's not what I came to them for really. Actually yeah, this is definitely worse than Iridescence and after such a wait that is a damn shame.

I don't get it, when they dropped 3 albums in one year they had more consistency. I don't want to believe the loss of Ameer affected them that much considering he always felt out of place, was kind of boring in many songs due to his repetition and those 1997-1999 singles were fucking fire, but the magic is mostly gone minus a few cuts here. I think they have some great work left in them as a collective, but mostly I'm just waiting for the inevitable solo album from JOBA and Merlyn's trap blow-up whenever that happens.

Day 610: Norman Fucking Rockwell by Lana Del Rey

Like I said before, the 5 year anniversary special is still being worked on! At the rate I'm working it'll be lucky to be a 5.5 year anniversary special, but to be honest do you care? Who reads these things? And what I have planned is peak self-indulgence so really, it's obvious that just like this thread I'm doing this for myself. But stay tuned, the two of you who check this thread, for the special surprise I have planned!

Anyways, I haven't listened to a Lana album since Ultraviolence. I remember how she went from some kinda Pitchfork hype to melon backlash to slowly regaining respect and now apparently she's /mu/bae again? Whatever, the strange thing is is that I still enjoy Ultraviolence which coincides with Fantano's angriest moments. I pull it out less than once per year, fair, but it definitely is a fun, fun album full of cheese and pomp. I described it as sounding like "a made-for-TV collaboration between early David Lynch and John Waters" and I stand by that... god I miss Puerto Rico. Where has the time gone?

Anyways, this album is good, but I don't like it as much. It's comparatively very subdued, with a whole lotta tracks of just pure piano ballads. The first 5 or so tracks are great, but eventually it just turns into WAY too many ballads over and over again. Are they bad? No! Do they get boring in such abundance? Yes! Cut this down to, like, two-thirds or less and it'd be a great album. Nonetheless, I will probably return to this once in a damn while, because when it's on, it's ON.

Day 613: Come In by Weatherday

I'm sick as fuck, my foot's infected, I've been in a car for 7 hours now and am stuck one more, and I have a test and an essay due early next week. Kill me. Also I can barely hear this album behind the car chatter but whatever I'm rating it anyways.

Day 614: Braindrops by Tropical Fuck Storm

This is mellower and probably better-written than their last album, but my opinion is about equal.

Wait, turns out I didn't even review the last album despite listening to it multiple times it seems? Well, this is just OK for me. Some fantastic tracks, some boring tracks. I think I prefer this more restrained approach, but it's hard to tell.

Day 615: Liquid Colors by CFCF (Album Choice: noname219)

This seems to keep the same tempo throughout the entire album. The whole thing flows incredibly well track-to-track and in a way, it's resultantly extremely same-y yet in spite of that, I found myself mesmerized throughout the entire album even upon multiple consecutive listens. The atmosphere is basically "commercialized future" in a way similar to vaporwave except this clearly has more thought put into each individual track and doesn't rely so heavily on samples. The mostly seamless playback basically morphs this whole thing into one big piece, aided heavily by the similar melodies and tempos, and it's about the perfect length for what it's trying to achieve.

Definitely enjoying this a lot right now, although it could be my stressed out, overworked state of mind resulting in bias due to how well this works as study music. Will definitely revisit to see how it holds up before the end of the year, although I probably won't tell y'all.

Day 616: Dungeon Rap: The Introduction by DJ Armok / DJ Bishop / Pillbox

Scrolling through the charts as you definitely already know and I expected this to be a meme. I'm surprised it's not! Or at least I think it's not. When I think of dungeon synth I think of those absolutely horrible Burzum albums he made while locked up for stabbing that dude like a kajillion times, but this only sounds kinda like that in a few tracks and never as cheesy! The super scuzzy, lo-fi production makes me think of Screw or shit in that vein but with some obvious differences (like the fact that I'm pretty sure this isn't slowed down on most if not all tracks). The recording quality does make it so songs kinda blend into each other, further amplified by the short running time of most of these tracks.

Are they rapping in English or Ukrainian or what? It's really hard for me to tell, so I'm going off beats and atmosphere alone. In both of those aspects, this is very consistent, though picking favorite tracks will be tough. Favorite of the beatmakers (or beatchoosers if these guys are just MCs, I don't know shit about this) is definitely DJ Armok, whose style reminds me of a more polished but still raw Old Tapes-era Boards of Canada in certain places, but neither of the other two strike me as a weakest link or anything. Why is the Bandcamp digital tracklist different from the ones on YouTube and the physical? I fucking hate when bands do that. (EDIT: apparently THEY'RE ALIASES HAHAHAHA I'M AN IDIOT. Well, I definitely like more Armok songs than anything)

Some good chill-out music, occasionally with an oddly (but welcomed) sinister vibe yet never loses its fun trippy headspace, definitely want to return to this. Clearly I like shit that just numbs me out.

Oh wait they're definitely rapping in English.

Day 617 (area code baby!): All My Heroes Are Cornballs by JPEGMAFIA

This is a lot chiller than Veteran which remains one of my top albums of last year. Compared to the common Death Grips comparison that the 2018 album got, this borders on R&B for perhaps a majority of tracks. This project feels a bit more consistent with fewer obvious lows, but it definitely doesn't reach the same peaks either. This is gonna need some repeated listens to make a real verdict on it, but I'm loving dude's ability to bring a similar energy as before to a completely different style and having it mesh fairly well, and that counts for a lot.

Anyways time to go jerk off to those leaked Anthony Fantano nudes again.

Listened several times and really I shouldn't be writing this shit bc homework but I needs to remember how much I like it. I like it a lot! It's groovy and feels danceable while avoiding feeling repetitive in the slightest, and it's sequenced quite elegantly. I have no real complaints on this one!

Day 619: Everywhere at the End of Time - Stage 6 by The Caretaker (Album Choice: choof)

Did I review one of these earlier? Lemme check.

I did. It was the third one. Either way, go read up on the story behind these albums if you want, but I'm jumping straight into the most recent part because 2019, and because I want to see how it holds without the context.

I barely remember what the other one sounded like, but I do remember how it had far more tracks, with this one only having 4 pieces. And compared to the more obviously sample-based work displayed on that earlier album, this one is far more minimalist and seemingly focused on soundscapes, or really just, like, static. The final track is absolutely gorgeous, but with the other ones I get the sense I really should've listened to this whole project lol

Oh well, one day I will listen to the whole thing as intended. For now, ehh

Day 620: Dog Whistle by Show Me The Body

I feel like I meant to listen to this forever ago for some reason and why is eluding me. Whatever.

The interlude tracks are utterly pointless. The rest of the tracks range from noisy and racuous to noisy and sludgy, and while I prefer the slower ones, the whole package is good here besides those stupid spoken word bits and those only add up to like 75 seconds! At 28 minutes, this is a perfect blast of fuzz that never feels overbearing and stays interesting throughout.

Day 621: EMMANUEL by Ameer Vann

So I'm gonna try to ignore all the social aspects of the drama that happened with this dude and the rest of BROCKHAMPTON, or at least not give my own take on it as much as possible. Rather than that, I'd like to bring attention to what I said in my recent review of GINGER. I always thought the boys could bounce back without this guy, and I never found this guy to be interesting since his flow and subject matter got so utterly same-y, but considering the quality of their recent projects minus a few singles I was wondering if dude was the missing key to them making good projects as a group.

Nope. This is boring as fuck. How you gonna disappear for two years then drop a 12 minute EP that lives up exactly to what all your detractors say? Well, musical detractors, not even thinking about (perhaps well-justified) character attacks. Anyways, I have no hope for THIS guy's solo career as of right now thanks to this EP! Merlyn should've been the one to drop a solo trap tape because he actually gets people hype. This is competent, but it's bland and a drag, and being a drag within such a short running time does not bode well for bigger projects.

Day 622: Charli by Charli XCX

Call me hipster daddy.

Just kidding, because I ain't nobody's father, and because I am basically just getting hip to this woman's music besides the two songs we all know. Just like Carly Rae Jepsen I seem to have missed some sort of hipster appraisal, or rather I ignored some sort of hipster appraisal since I always knew she had a huge /mu/-esque following.

Also, I find both of the two songs I know her from to be utterly grating garbage. But to be fair, they're not "her" songs, instead she just featured for Iggy Azalea's meme ass and... who the figgity fuck is Icona Pop? Anyways, my opinion is those songs sucked but she managed to make them suck harder, but still, it wasn't HER writing, she just came off as annoying in her delivery. Not a good starting point, but whatever.

Y'know, although I only like a select few songs from her, I totally see the bubblegummy, feel-good appeal of Carly Rae Jepsen's music as a whole, from her big hit (singular) to her nerd-adored work. It fills a certain saccharine niche that in other hands would be entirely annoying or even sickening, probably because she chooses some bangers for backing tracks.

Some of these backing tracks also slap, but I'm failing to see the specific appeal over countless other electropop artists outside of a few really hard-hitting, almost industrial sounding tracks and a few dance floor killers. The rest is just kinda.... there... for me. Inoffensive, but I don't see why people are fawning over it like no tomorrow. Also, how dare you utilize Lizzo so fucking poorly? Still, it almost never annoyed me!

Wait, people like her because of some connection to PC Music? The fuck is this? I should've guessed since she helped SOPHIE blow up but I completely missed this and y'know what I'm not even gonna try or go down this Google rabbit hole.

This is gonna be a bad review right before I knock. Dude who requested, I'ma get to Psychedelic Porn Crumpets sooner or later but this was 2019 and it seemed like good study music. And it was.

I generally like my stoner rock more mellow and less bombastic as this felt. Going for a more metallic vibe here it seems, which comes off as fitting in some places, kinda cheesy or jam-bandy in a way.

I'm not in the right mindset rn. I have to revisit this one baked.

Day 624: Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich (Album Choice: EzExZeRo7497)

Hey sis, how long has it been since I've reviewed something you've recommended? Just so turns out this is perfect for my studious purposes. Or at least I think it is. I KNOW I've listened to several pieces by this guy before but shit's eluding me completely. Don't live like me kids or you'll end up going from smart precocious kid to wasted potential to actually stupid now. Let's stop this before it gets too pitiful.

Okay, so the music. Well, it actually got me to focus on work for a good portion of it, so it wins on that merit. And as a seamless piece, this is amazingly hypnotic in how it uses repetition to really accent the textures of each section while sucking you into its overall headspace. Was that last sentence stupid? Did it sound like thesaurus diarrhea? I don't know because I'm a fucking moron! The brief ending piece Pulses II is a fitting cap.

Good album. Or song I guess. Back to work.

I don't care about The Wall. I don't care about Nostalgia Critic. This album thusly is unfunny, tedious and often cringe-y, but I've definitely heard worse. The singing is annoying as fuck but otherwise it's mostly musically competent, probably because it's mostly BASED on an album I find "competent".

If this is intended as a backhanded response to #ChangeTheChannel with such great titles like We Don't Need Victimization that makes it funnier. Same rating tho

Day 627: Bones by Datach'i

I see I was recommended an album from this dude way back in 2013 by April. Never got to that, but maybe now I will?

This album starts off really strong, then peters off quite a bit in the middle, ending almost as good as the first few tracks. Seeing how this guy is called flashcore I assume this is his most melodic work, but the less melodic tracks aren't doing much for me beyond study music. The whole thing is pretty minimalistic but it shows how much of a difference a simple ass synthline does for my simple ass.

Study. Study. Study. Dexter's Laboratory clip. I still like this way more than the last one.

Day 629: Rain Forest by Paul Hardcastle (Album Choice: Josemba)

I can't tell if this stuff reminds me most of vaporwave, 80s era direct-to-VHS informationals (is that even a word) or modern vaporwave offshoots like future funk. This came before all of that except the VHS stuff. It's kitschy, but god I love the vibe and it never stops being groovy save for a briefly annoying midsection in Forest Fire. Good recommendation, and I'm not just saying that to be nice. This totally slaps AND works for homework purposes.

Maybe that latter part is a dumb benchmark to be using. Ah well fuck you. Someone do a search on this thread and see how many times I've said "fuck you".

Day 630: Voyager VII by Cygnus

I saw this guy live exactly 4 years ago to this day as he opened for Autechre. He actually put on the best set of the night, the only other competition being some DJ that played two seperate 90 minute sets whereas everyone else got 45 minutes. I never checked his music out, but what better time than now?

This is not better than Autechre, or at least my favorites of theirs. Some of these tracks groove hard, and then a bunch bore the fucking shit out of me. Also 57 minutes is too long, and some of the sound effects are cheesy as all hell. Still, I commend the album for successfully maintaining the "video game outer space" sound dude was going for even when the tracks don't hit, and maybe I'll like this more with repeat listens.

I don't know why but this soundtrack reminds me a lot of the Beat Therapy album I reviewed that was the soundtrack to a game I played as a child. I recently switched from new-line Android to an old beat up iPhone 6 and wanted to download the game but it seems it isn't compatible with my phone :(
