Day 522: Outer Peace by Toro Y Moi

Reviewing an early leak! Is it unethical? Maybe. Do I care? Nah. Last time I reviewed one of this guy's releases was 2013, back during that initial review challenge... ima go look back at that real quick.

That was awful. And it was 2015 actually.

Some of these production choices are a bit questionable. The "ahh ahh ahh"s in Freelance or some of the sound effects in Who Am I are just plain goofy-sounding, and bring the songs down a bit although not to the point of unpleasantness. Also, the last two tracks are basically trap songs, or rather dude's attempt to mix his style with trap, and neither are good.

Considering how samey this genre often is, I applaud the dude's attempt at genre and mood blending but it led to a pretty frontloaded album overall.

Day 523: Buoys by Panda Bear

Cranked and Master are the best cuts here. I also enjoyed Dolphin and Token, then the rest range from meh-to-agitating (a rarity, I didn't enjoy the opening track nor the title track). The vocal effects here are nowhere near as ethereal or as, well, necessary as Person Pitch and I feel I would've enjoyed a rawer approach more.

Still almost definitely better than an Avey Tare's solo work that I'm not gonna delve further into.

Day 525: I Am > I Was by 21 Savage

The copy I have of this is very slightly misordered (is that's word? I'm not googling), putting the opener as the third track instead. I think I prefer it this way, mainly because the stupid-yet-infectious A&T works as a much better second track due to immediate juxtaposition while feeling oddly jarring placed as third.

Anyways, I came into this with supremely low expectations, but color me surprised, I actually enjoyed this more than Astroworld and Die Lit. Some tracks would benefit from a more aggressive delivery, but most fit his rapping style very well, and considering I actually somewhat enjoyed Childish Gambino's feature in Monster I feel obligated to say the features are great. Variety is indeed the spice of life.

There were some tracks I didn't enjoy, although strangely the banger attempts are more hit-or-miss than the more personal cuts, and some of the lyrics are ass-stupid ("I want you to suck me like you suckin' your thumb" what the fuck lol) but overall this is remarkably consistent without really getting boring.

I told yall 525 was gonna suck. Also I fucked up the capitalization.

Best Track: Monster or Ball Without You although I'd rather hear A&T in the club

Day 527: Bird Box by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

I have not watched this movie and will not until someone else forces me to watch it with them. I used to be BIG into Nine Inch Nails... when I was about 12, and now too much of their music either comes across as cringy to me or reminds me of cringe-ass 12 year old me. Some songs are good, usually the sex ones, but my favorite release of theirs nowadays is probably Ghosts I-IV as hit-or-miss as that one is. Based on the very little I remember of other soundtracks these two did (from watching the movies, like The Social Network and...) this should be right up my alley.

Is Sleep Deprivation supposed to be a redux of that crying song in Twin Peaks? You know the one. I swear some of the progressions are near identical matchups.

I was about to try and write an actually good review but nah this album really doesn't deserve it. Meh.

Day 528: Malibu Ken by Malibu Ken

Within 5 seconds of playing the album, one can immediately tell that this is Tobacco making the beats due to his distinctive style, although for the most part he uses a greater amount of restraint and lower amount of overdubs which makes the whole thing sound nice and simple in some places, empty in others.

Acid King has the best lyrics on the album. Suicide Big Gulp has the best flow on the album. Although the flow is something that seems to have changed very little, the last Aesop Rock release I reviewed was a lot more... impenetrable with the words chosen, but the beats were not nearly as weird, which I care about more.

Overall, I definitely like this one. Some parts are weaker than others and I think that the Black Moth Super Rainbow guy went a bit too restrained, but this is an enjoyable, concise album with fresh approaches.

Day 530: Nothing Is Something by Tree & Vic Spencer

The Bass was briefly a contender for my favorite cut on this album, then the countdown hook took me out of it.

Other than that minor quibble (am I old now? or is that more a hipstery word?) I have nothing to complain about. This is very consistent, the perfect length, very well-produced and very well-ordered. The mood variance is subtle, but I think it's enough for this kinda project.

I've listened to this album 3 times now. I KNOW these are good, well-written songs. Unfortunately, I just don't feel hooked or interested by the majority of it. And what makes it more agitating for me is that there are plenty of really cool bits here, so why don't I love this album?

Day 535: Girl With Basket Of Fruit by Xiu Xiu (Album Choice: mad people I know)

Starts out pretty interesting, maintains a pretty interesting atmosphere afterwards for a while with a few errors, by The Wrong Thing I was starting to lose interest, then I really enjoyed the last two tracks. With the exception of strangely cathartic closer Normal Love (which ALMOST fits its title compared to the rest of these "songs") I think the more cluttered it is the better it is, other than the campy Mary Turner Mary Turner (Amargi Ve Moo) also made me groan.

This would make for either a horrendous or a wonderful live show.

For a 32 minute album, there's a distressing amount of filler here. Also, why are there so many spoken word/field recording sections in this album?

Day 541: New Atlantis by Efdemin

Is the album title the theme that this guy was going for? The vocals in the beginning and spoken word in the final track both suck ass, let's get that out of the way. Some of these tracks, ESPECIALLY the title track (which is also the longest cut) and Black Sun, are groovy enough that they could keep a club going if just played on loops. The rest are just... weird and not in an interesting way. The appropriately titled Temple just sounds like a lost SNES game song, At The Strangers House feels like a weird, crappy bastard child of Nine Inch Nails and Boards Of Canada and I already complained about those first and last tracks.

Strip away all the fat and you're left with a decent little half-hour album. As it stands this is way overlong and it's mostly the fault of the shorter tracks and interludes.

This is better than every Wu-Tang album that isn't the debut. Maybe not Wu-Tang Forever either but I haven't listened to that one in years. I hope everyone who reads this realizes exactly how difficult of a task that is.

It's succinct (yay for a lack of terrible skits), and it's consistent. The beats are simple, and I'm not complaining. Only qualm I have is some of these lyrics are actually REALLY bad to the point of almost being comedic, predominantly some of Esoteric's one-liners.

Day 545: Remind Me Tomorrow by Sharon Von Etten

This is gonna be the year of listening to artists I saw live years ago but never bothered listening to! She was, in fact, the opening act at the first show (they called it a "festival") I ever went to without family. I was 17, so many missed opportunities... fuck social anxiety.

Anyways, her act was good, even great, but for some reason I stupidly assumed I wouldn't like her recorded music. Maybe I had an internal bias against female artists at that time, or maybe some weird rockist shit. Or maybe it's because I was too mesmerized by Tame Impala and Beck. Regarding the latter, haters fuck off and commit seppuku. Regarding the former, hate as you please, I think they aight. Anyways, listening now is proving my preconceptions wrong like the useless fucking moron I am.

This is wonderfully consistent, yet there's just enough eclecticism to prevent one from getting bored, even an unmedicated fuck-up like myself! You have bombastic, almost stadium-ready rockers like Hands and Seventeen, fuzzy swing pop with You Shadow, psychedelia with Jupiter 14 and dancy album closer Stay, and much, much more! This sounds like an advertisement I suck at writing like I suck at life and everything else.

I'm mad at myself for waiting 4 years to listen to this artist. The only complaint I have with this album is the opener is a little boring. Other than that, unless my tastes shift or a lot of crazy shit comes out, this is a strong contender for my top 20 for the year. I am a shifty guy though, I haven't gotten laid in months, I've slept like 35 hours total over the past week and it's worsening my depression. And I have tests to take.

To add to that, let's call this "the year I listen to albums I listened to years ago, didn't think it deserved a review, forgot to rate it and welp here we are". This guy I remember I first listened to back in 2013! What a time distance. I didn't think it deserved a review back then, but these are less reviews nowadays and more just me shitting out a couple of opinions with occasionally some bad jokes or anecdotes and whatnot. In fact because my reviews have deteriorated so much this paragraph being this long makes it a better recent one! I keep doing it as a ratings/first impressions log I suppose. Anyways, I remember enjoying this album but less than Up In Flames.

There's something awfully jam bandy about the longer tracks here, and a bunch of the shorter tracks are corny. A few cuts like the opener are pretty good, most aren't.

Technically, this is a single, but both of the songs are long as fuck and I've reviewed 2 song EPs of a similar length before. And besides, do you really care if I only review albums and EPs or whatever? IDK man I'm still tired as fuck I miss the first 2 years of college when academics were easy.

Tipped In Hugs is great, and I came into this expecting some annoying splatter-noodliness but got sweet psych folk pop instead. Dog Says Goodbye isn't really my cup of tea, but it's not annoying so yay! Both of these songs could really be trimmed down to, like, two-thirds.

Day 552: Plastic Anniversary by Matmos

Based on the descriptors and the genres, I thought I'd enjoy this more than I did, but after listening to this three times I'm honestly quite disappointed. There are more than a few good songs here, mostly the more sinister-sounding ones and the rare more melodic ones, but the majority of this album just feels way too spare and empty, and some of the samples are annoying to the point of sounding like stock sound effects... unless those are stock sound effects. (I checked after writing the rest of this bullcrap, those are indeed real instruments being chopped up)

My disappointment is likely largely my fault for expecting something that the album definitely wasn't going for, but even other albums I've listened to that were going for a similar vibe (like the footwork albums I reviewed in 2017) weren't this... grating oftentimes. Even at a relatively short 40 minutes, this is a bit of a slog. I might just turn this into an EP for myself and that personal selection would go up a couple points. Or maybe I'd give it more points if I was, like, fucked up beyond words at a music festival. The best thing about this album is that, in spite of me not really enjoying it, I'm curious to check out the other Matmos albums because I'm assuming they'd sound completely different. Hope I'm not setting myself up for disappointment again!

I like this more than Iridescence, maybe because it's concise and focused. I always HATED the pitch shifting aspect of BROCKHAMPTON's music, but it's used sparingly here and never feels too out of place. The backing tracks this time around also feel more thoughtful than most tracks off all of their albums, with a lot more morphing and shifting in every track here, even the super short intro track.

This made me slightly more excited for their next release.

Day 556: Cows on Hourglass Pond by Avey Tare

This is very much the next step to Tangerine Reef, except this time there are actual songs instead of just soundscapes. And the fact that it's not under the Animal Collective banner. Avey sings with the same inflection he always does, which comes off as fittingly strained and borderline-childlike when it works, plain stupid and dopey when it doesn't.

Chilly Blue is gorgeous and is a surprising highlight despite being basically an interlude. It's not the best track, but it has a certain quality that a lot of these songs don't, which is a singular direction. That... might not be the best way to compare it to the rest of the songs, as this is certainly a lot less splatter-y than Centipede Hz or any Black Moth Super Rainbow in its approach, but a lot of tracks here tend to take their time to grow and develop. Sometimes it works, like the first two tracks, sometimes it doesn't, like the dumbass ending to K.C. Yours. The only other songs that seems to be pretty stagnant in their development are Our Little Chapter minus some overlays towards the end, which is a sucky track, and , which is better than the last song I mentioned.

Overall though, this is the best Animal Collective release in a long while. Not GREAT, but not bad at all.

I still hate this band's name, but I enjoyed this more than the one other Sunn (bad emoticon) album I listened to, that being Black One which I found kinda cheesy. Earth is still better but this ain't half-bad, probably because they're not going for that stupid "we're SPOOKY" vibe.

Best Track: Novæ (but this feels like one song)
Rating: 7/10 (these are getting boringly repetitive and predictable)

Day 558: The End by Shlohmo (Album Choice: I like it)

This one is pretty good. You can trim out a few tracks, mostly the ones that feel more trap-influenced, and be left with a better album. Also peters off a bit somewhere in the middle but the last three tracks are honestly the best.

Help I've fallen and I can't get up. I wish that actually happened to me school is insanity.

Day 559: Ribbons by Bibio (Album Choice: dashoe93)

I thought this was gonna be electronic for some reason, this is just indie pop with a lot of folk influence in it. Some tracks sound like the late-period albums of The Books and those are the crappy Books albums. Other songs just sound like Folk Impala, or maybe Samba Impala. Some of these songs are pretty enough, especially those that are more layered, a lot are either boring or just kinda annoying. Mostly I notice that I MUCH prefer the funkier tracks, and once again, this album is too goddamn long.

Now that I look at it again, why the fuck did I think this was gonna be electronic?

The Mind Bokeh Album has the electronic bits you're looking for, but ye it's mostly indie funk/folk stuff. Guess I haven't listened to enough Bibio, but this album is a bit softer than usual

Day 560: GHETTOBABY by Kevin Abstract

I'm ignoring the first 3 tracks because those are the same as the last EP I reviewed. The first track covers the same ground lyrically as usual, but the beat and atmosphere are strangely chill with a nice guitar line that makes it wholly enjoyable. The other two tracks are overproduced pop-R&B crap with too much falsetto.

JOBA release a fucking solo album already.

Day 561: Green and Gray by Pile

I was hype to see these guys at Boston Calling (as well as Mitski and Denzel Curry amongst others) for the first time in over 3 years then I realized I'll be at another concert. Lame, oh well.

Anyways, I like this more than their last album, it might even top Dripping for me with some repeat listens (although it's hard to beat Magic Isn't Real). It has some issues with sequencing, like the transition from Hair to The Soft Hands Of Stephen Miller was obviously meant to be jarring, but it still kinda ruins the flow of things. But regardless, this is a real consistent batch of songs, with some of the best screamers they've ever written and some gorgeous softer tracks. Go listen to it.

Day 562: On Time Out Of Time by William Basinski

I saw this performed live, and the performance was definitely longer than this album. It also worked better in a church setting than on headphones while doing homework. For Basinski there's a heck of a lot of movement and change going on in this first piece especially, yet in spite of that it's one of his emptier-sounding releases somehow.

Not his best work, but I'll take it.

Best Track: The first one
Rating: 5.5/10 (funny, because the performance was pretty damn close to a 10/10, and his opener was DEFINITELY a 10/10)

Day 564: Hexed by Children of Bodom (Album Choice: Hateandhatred)

The only song I know from these guys is Blooddrunk for reasons that should be incredibly obvious to anybody that's a member of this website. This is much faster for the most part than that song, although some songs keep that slower speed.

I've never claimed to be a real connoisseur of melodic death metal, or even death metal as a whole, but compared to a lot of other releases of the same genre I've listened to, this feels kinda soulless. They've got some good riffs in there, the vocals aren't bad, but really there's just nothing that makes this stick out to me. It ultimately just feels a little too clean and safe which is a really weird way to describe death metal.

I'm gonna die.

Day 565: Digital Maestro by DM Ashura

This is another case where I've listened to this album before, but it's been over half a decade and I basically considered this lost media since the death of What.CD until I met the man himself at a rave he performed at and bought a copy, it was old overstock from 2007. Then I realized I have no CD drive anywhere in this house, so I asked the man himself for a digital copy and he gave me one. Nice guy, go support him by either going to a show he plays or taking his math class.

Immediately with the opening vocals of Psychosis and up until the end with that DDR Ultramix song, this hits me like a blast of nostalgia for the long past years of 2007-2008 when I first found this website and Stepmania. Long before I was depressed, long before I had to do fucking Master's projects in college, long before I gave a shit about school, long before I ever held a job, long before I got intoxicated on any substances, long before I realized I wasn't asexual, long before I had any legal scares (gee thanks high school, can't believe I got accused of bioterrorism for some fucking ghost peppers), long before personal drama between friends happened on a frequent basis, long before I developed serious social anxieties that I compensate for through unnecessary volume and extroversion, long before I basically became the fuck-up I am today. This brings me back to the days when I first found this website and Stepmania soon after, when shit like the simfile database and ITGFreak existed, when I was making terrible YouTube Poops to share with my friends on the school bus, when I had no phone or social media, when I thought smoking smarties was hilarious, when I thought swearing made you a badass, when being able to do simple maths made you feel smart and when the Wii was brand-spanking new, when I was using shitty survey websites like PrizeRebel to get my money (which in retrospect was horribly slow but hey, video games). I miss those days, life is sad now. At least my family has a dog now.

If an album invokes that kind of reaction in me, it's either fucking terrible, or it's great. I'm leaning towards the latter, because the last time I had a reaction like this was that fucking Shaggs album and to be quite honest I still don't understand that one. I also like the way this album feels somewhat cohesive, and besides the last two obviously-meant-to-be-bonus tracks, the sequencing feels pretty great, which, for an album that consists of 25% remixes, is impressive. I can see this being a great accompaniment to meditating in a dark room, sober or not.

ADDENDUM: Mental health is a fucking bitch, y'all. Fuck the United States health care system, but that's not to blame for my own problems, I just suck at doing things.

Best Track: Psychosis (Obelisk and Return Of Neon come quite close though)
Rating: 8.5/10 (In reality, it's probably not deserving of such a high rating and is quite the lengthy album, but fuck it sentimentality rules over all)

Idk if this means much to you, but as a 21yo schmuck who's constantly around musicians, I'm sure you'll find your people if you keep going to shows and keep making more music. High school is really a clusterfuck of identity confusion and hormone-driven egotism, but I'm sure there are a few cool, self-aware people who will dig you. After high school, it seems it's slightly--if not loads--easier to find humble-yet-cultured people who genuinely like you for who you are. Sort of makes the other adult shit more tolerable. Anyway, that's enough condescending blab from me.

I tried to keep it interesting. Hope things go well for you man! :)

Finding more people was true, and college is indeed better than high school, but I'm still a clusterfuck of identity confusion and hormone-driven egotism. I GUESS I'm happier than high school... Maybe? But that's only because high school was an actual hellhole and college is where I became detached from everything shit I don't fucking know what even is life

This is not the point of the thread what am I blabbering on about back to schoolwork

This is pretty solid stuff wait holy shit this dude dropped 5 albums this year already?! Okay anyways, this is pretty solid stuff, the lyrics, the beats, the flow, the hooks, all pretty solid stuff for the most part wow I repeated that phrase 3 fucking times. Very different in tone and style from the rap albums I usually listen to, because I usually listen to extremely mainstream shit, but I like it. A few bars come off as kinda corny or even sappy at times (No Time kinda sucks as a whole) but not enough to drag this down. If I do give this repeat listens I may like it more or like it less. Just like usual, I am saying NOTHING of substance. I need to brush my teeth.

All of these ended up being overrated for my expectations except for the ASUNA & Jan Jelinek one which is really good imo.

Day 569: Igor by Tyler The Creator

To repeat what I've been shitting all over the rest of the internet, there's too much fucking pitch shifting. This isn't as good as Flower Boy but it's better than all his other albums, especially Cherry Bomb to which this kinda seems like an attempt at a do-over. A lot of these tracks feel like The Internet rejects and I don't think Tyler is enough of a singer to carry this kind of album so it could use some more features. I still do like it though, and the bangers are some of his best party tracks ever.

But the fucking pitch-shifting whyyyyyy

Day 570: Harverd Dropout by Lil Pump

This being in the RYM bottom 20 for 2019 so far is ludicrous. This feels more like a mixtape than an album, with seemingly very little thought given to album flow and track order and whatnot, most of the features are completely useless in the one thing they NEED to do (which is add variety) and it's ridiculously repetitive, but still, bottom 20?

Compared to his 2017 release, the production on this is significantly less grating and terrible (fuck you melon you're wrong again). The rapping is still ass, but I'm not here for bars. This definitely is twice as long as it needs to be, and some of these songs are real stinkers (I dunno if Off White is a stinker because it's fucking funny, but Vroom Vroom Vroom and Stripper Name definitely suck the smegma off a donkey's dick), but what's good is fun enough.

Not that terrible.

Day 571: Anoyo by Tim Hecker

It's 4:30 AM and I've listened to this 3 times now. The Hecker album this reminds me of most is probably Virgins due to a heavier presence of acoustic instruments than usual, but unlike Virgins I actually quite like this one. This one is REAL short, the shortest release I've ever heard from this guy, and only the first and last track out of six are over 5 minutes in length. What this lacks in length I think it more than makes up for in intricacy, as this may not be as hypnotic as his other releases but the variations in sounds and samples makes it one of his more engaging releases. Not Alone isn't a stronger track here, but it basically sounds like ambient Fuck Buttons which is not something I'd ever expect ol Timmyboy to do.

Good stuff.

It's 4:30 AM.

Day 572: Titanic Rising by Weyes Blood

I really like the cinematic, almost bombastic feeling of the first track. I was hoping the whole album kept that tone throughout, and they clearly tried. Did they hit the mark?

...Eh. Some of the other songs are GREAT, like Movies and Mirror Forever, and keep that gospel-movie kinda quality to them and do it well. Then there's a bunch of songs which just veer way too far into the "boring indie pop" internal bias I have. None of these songs are outright BAD (although what the fuck is with the country Beach Boys sound of the second and third track?), and I understand that my expectations from the first track are probably unfair because

1. Things are always frontloaded
2. "Cinematic" isn't even in the RYM descriptors

But yeah, it... just didn't really captivate me all that much. Maybe I'll appreciate it more with more listens, but I've listened to it thrice now! More likely, I'll delete the songs I don't want and keep this as a high 8 EP.

Melon is a 4channer at heart I just know it and I also blame his stans for always bullshitting RYM scores and making internet music discussions reek of bacterial vaginosis, but at least he doesn't write sub-Christgau malarky like this babble I defecated out in 300 seconds.

Day Konami: Hi This Is Flume by Flume

Some good songs, yeah. Some wack songs, yeah. Some undercooked ideas, yeah.

Based on memory alone because my Snapchat memories don't load that far back, this is not even 25% as enjoyable ss seeing the dude live (which is an unfair metric, that was a crazy good concert). It's not a bad release, pretty middling overall. Surprisingly good sequencing for a supposed mixtape, there just needs to be a higher quality of songs.

Where Are We Going? remains my second favorite album of 2017. This is only an EP, but it's more consistent than that and with a better atmosphere. This may very well be my favorite release of 2019 to be quite honest, not counting singles because then I have to give it up to U Was At Da Club (Bottoms Up). Damn this isn't an album because it would make ranking things at the end of the year so much easier.
