A Viable 10-key Stepmania Setup

About a year ago someone suggested I buy the Logitech K120. Admittedly, I'm borderline ADHD, so I am occasionally forgetful of things like what I order or why. When I got it in the mail I used it like a regular USB keyboard and completely blanked on why I bought it. I just assumed it was because it was a good keyboard and in my mind, that was the reason and I never thought about it since.

About an hour ago I remembered the real reason why I bought the keyboard. This is incredible:

USB keyboards have limitations of about six presses at once. This is inadvertently why 6-key is popular on Stepmania, while 8-key (despite the game's capability for it) is not.

To press 10 at once on one keyboard, you'd need to have a PS/2 connection and a mechanical keyboard. These are extremely expensive; worse, laptops do not generally support PS/2 keyboards. But since desktops are so uncommon now, you need a workaround.

This method allows you to dodge the USB limitation by using two USB keyboards, with a hypothetical max input of 12 at once.

10-key is the logical extent of how far this game can go, which is why it's been so appealing to me. Someone who is as good as you can get at 10-key has effectively maximized how good human fingers can get period. The idea is appealing on that basis alone.

When I get some free time, I'm going to see if it's possible to mod SM SSC into 10k and make some files.

Yup, should be ready to go right out of the box. Just get/make a new noteskin and get to charting. Sounds fun.

i don't think a lot of people will try this, however i do know that a few people play lr2 with dual kbs (iirc lg is one of them)

we tried getting 7k off the ground on kbo, not sure if you remember that but that was a few years ago and there's still less than 40 7k charts for sm

i can actually hit 10 keys on my usb keyboard
granted, said keyboard costs more than $40
just goes to show how you should never think in absolutes

also, 6 key popular? making a lot of assumptions there lmao

I can hit 20+ keys at one time on my keyboard. Iyd a USB march KB though. Expensive? Yeah. Worth it? Definitely. Not even for sm just typing on a brown switch keyboard is fucking golden

Re: A Viable 10-key Stepmania Setup

I remember for a portion of the tournament, iirc on Capo or Fuse, where I had used my laptop keyboard and a spare I have kicking around to play and grab the AAA. I've used two keyboards infrequently but there is something about it where it's not only fun to play on two keyboards, but impressive that you are playing with your hands further away from each other than ever before.

Doesn't laptop keyboards also have the power to hit 10 keys at once? I know the one I used to use was able to hit at least 7 keys without issues, but don't quote me since it's been awhile since I've even been able to play.

Also didn't Velocity rig FFR to play 20 keys and he even had a video of it?

USB N-Key Rollover (USB NKRO): Under USB, the Ducky Shine 4 can handle any number of simultaneous key presses. You can use the keyboard confidently in any situations knowing that there will never be ghosting or key blocking issue.
just gonna put this here

yes, like I got a muse-on and this v-muse beacause the v-muse is compact and easy to bring in my backpack but when I'm home I use the muse-on for iidx gameplay, as for normal 4 key I tend ot use the v-muse or my solomania controller

how about we play 15 key

10 fingers
two foot pedals with heel and toe activation
and some button on your chair's headrest to pound your head into

this is the logical progression of stepmania

Why not just play Synthesia?

On another note. If theres a 10k pack released, consider me a 10k player. 10k looks like alot of fun.

there are lots of midi controllers out there that you could do the same thing with

playing on a midi keyboard would be weird though, as binding the midi keyboard to keys you'd have to take into account key velocity, on some of the midi keyboards I have the lowest velocity can be super easy to trigger (lightly brushing on a key for example), and i'm not actually aware of any software that would let you map midi keys to normal keys and allow you to specify a minimum velocity

here's the amazon page for midi controllers, there's a ton:

"Bome's Midi Translator Classic" lets you map midi to keytaps without respect to velocity

So would it trigger at 1 velocity then? Both of my midi controllers register 1 velocity if you breathe on them wrong

they stopped making them so ya they are hard to get now, just get a cheap mini midi keyboard and some midi to usb unless it has it included cuz its prob a load cheaper than getting a fucking keyboard just to play sm hahaha

no, it lets you trigger a keytap upon a midi note no matter what the velocity is

in other words, you can trigger a keytap at midi note xx with velocity *

got a midi controller myself so I tought lets try this shit out, the issue with this program is that its just emulating the keys and not using any direct input so it wont use they keys in stepmania because stepmania uses directx
