Drawing of a Basketball

1 Attachment(s)
Attachment 35890

I drew this in an art class for the first time and used a pencil for the outline and colored pencils to color the drawing. Please tell me your what you think of it. :)

In my opinion, you should use the same color for the entire ball.

Yeah, maybe, but I drew the basketball from about twenty feet away. From my point of view, the middle of the basketball seemed a little brighter than the top and bottom of it. I'll most likely try using the same color next time though. :)

*edit* Now that I think about it, I probably should have used the brighter orange for the mid-bottom section of the basketball and colored the top and bottom sections with the darker orange.

Re: Drawing of a Basketball

That is definitely something worth considering when depicting a basketball, especially if you want to give the impression to the viewer that it is at a distance of twenty feet. However, I think it would be better executed by a difference in shading rather than the color used.

drizzleRomanceGirl 03-6-2014 12:12 AM

Re: Drawing of a Basketball

I agree, I'll try to use more shading next time.

ilikexd 03-6-2014 12:13 AM

Re: Drawing of a Basketball

No problem. I used to draw a lot of basketballs, and one of the more difficult things to deal with was how to show the difference in brightness of the top and middle without making it seem unrealistic.

Yes, really. I'm sorry if my artwork isn't "good" enough for you to take it seriously, but I put some work into this.

You know, when I look at this, I can see a balding man with curly hair in the back. I don't know why I can see this, I just do.

I almost wanna draw a face in there.

God dang, I'm bad at drawing so much so I would say this is 9/10 lol.

Probably doesn't help that the picture you took looks like it was taken with a potato.

Thank you! Drawing is a lot easier when you have a frame of reference, in my opinion. :)

Yeah, unfortunately, the only camera I own is on my verizon wireless cell phone that slides so I can text. I would buy a better quality camera for taking pictures, but I rarely take any pictures so I don't think it would be worth spending at least $30 on a camera.

Re: Drawing of a Basketball

try drawing it bigger next time. It will help you be able to draw some of the details without them coming out squished and stuff.

I mean, *cough* I don't draw very often so I can't say anything. But when I do draw I find the larger drawings come out better than the smaller ones.

30 dollars will get you a really good disposable camera lol.

There's a lot in this drawing that could be heavily improved upon but first you need to get the fundamentals down. Keep drawing though!!

I'm pretty sure this is the best basketball I've ever seen in my life. Seems impossible to improve upon. In fact I though it was a real basketball and when I reached out to grab it I stubbed my fingers on my monitor.

Actually false. I'm gonna draw a basketball really small. Are you ready for this?

That's only because you can't see it. But that doesn't mean it isn't the best basketball drawing ever.

The ball is certainly rolling in this thread.

Keep up the practice drizzle, I suggest trying simple value and shading studies with pencil alone, and drawing it a bunch more times, just see what unique styles and lighting you can render with only a pencil. It'll also be a gateway to understanding how to draw more realistically aswell.

Thank you, I'll keep drawing and try different styles to see what I prefer. :) I'll also try more shading to test out how creative I can draw pictures.

Re: Drawing of a Basketball

I would also suggest drawing bigger. If anything, it will result in higher quality photos since you don't have to zoom in as much to take a picture of your drawing.

That being said, if you have a scanner available, I would certainly recommend scanning your picture instead of using a camera.

Scanners are pretty bad and I kind of suggest not using one unless it's a high quality scanner. Scanners tend to ruin any fine details and shading. Especially shading

Perhaps music might help influence a paradigm shift in style from the realist basketball you might be aiming for. Make a basketball in the shape of a torus, a cube, other things to practice creative thinking 8-)
