NHL Playoff Predictions: 2011-12 Edition
That's right. It's back. The one and only FFR NHL Playoff Predictions thread!
PREDICTIONS FOR ROUND 4 ARE CLOSED! Now that the regular season is over, it's time to get the playoff beards rolling for this season. A couple MAJOR shockers, and a few familiar faces line this years playoffs. Last year, a decent amount of FFRers took place in predicting and that thread turned into the hub for all playoff hockey talk stretching almost 70 pages long. Reshiram eventually became the grand champion by sealing his win after round 3. No one went below .500 though. Here's to hopefully an even bigger turn-out and some good chat among everyone! Want to see what everyone is picking? See this post to get an idea: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...9&postcount=29 -=-=-=-=-=- First things first, the part that matters the most. THE RULES: - All guesses must be in before puck drop of the first game of the round. - Bet per round; you don't have to pick your whole bracket in one go. - Anyone is free to join in any round; just as long a your predictions are posted in time. - Once your picks are made, they are done. No editting them at any time. - For your picks, copy and paste the bracket posted below and bold the teams you think will win each series. -=-=-=-=-=- PRIZE POOL: Each correct guess will be worth: 200 credits for the 1st round with a 3400 credit bonus if you get all 8. 200 credits for the 2nd round with a 2200 credit bonus if you get all 4. 400 credits for the 3rd round with a 1200 credit bonus if you get both teams correct. 600 credits for picking the Champion as well as a 9400 credit bonus if you correctly predict the amount of games they won in. (Note: If you picked team E in 6, but team W wins in 6, you do not get the bonus.) As well, the 2012 Playoff Pick Champion will receive another 5000 credits, as well as a graphic. However, you must predict for all 4 rounds to be in the pool for the title of Playoff Pick Champion. -=-=-=-=-=- And now. For the main attraction: here is the bracket for the second round of picks! Re: NHL Playoff Predictions: 2011-12 Edition
I'm getting tired of Chicago vs Vancouver. Personally, I don't think Chicago is a very good team, and just happened to be on the plus side of an unpredictable sequence of flukes when they won. I'd prefer if Phoenix offed them in round one. They're unskilled and gooney, and not very exciting to watch. Also the idea that 3 playoff series makes a rivalry is kind of annoying. Rivalry is what teams from the same region build up over decades.
My picks are the same as Poison's. |

Also, if you check the games they played against each other this season, there is no neat advantage to either team: 1. NJ @ FLA : 3-4 2. NJ @ FLA : 3-2 (shootout) 3. FLA @ NJ : 2-5 (2 empty netters) 4. FLA @ NJ : 3-1 (1 empty netter) Counting regular time goals, we get an even 11-11 for the season. Either could win. |
Re: NHL Playoff Predictions: 2011-12 Edition

Pittsburgh spent the last week of the season employing their "Injure everyone on the Flyers so we can beat them in the playoffs" strategy. Personally I think we should Broad Street Blow Their Brains Out all over the ice. #PenguinsAreDirtyCowards

Re: NHL Playoff Predictions: 2011-12 Edition

I am aware of the Halakness monster and what he did to Washington and Pittsburgh a couple years ago. The thing with the Sharks is that it's actually going to get easier for them as the playoffs progress. This is the toughest round. |
Re: NHL Playoff Predictions: 2011-12 Edition
You think the Blues are the toughest opponent in the west? I'd put them 5th. I don't even know if I consider SJ the underdogs here.
There are lots of teams this year like LA, Van, Nashville, and Detroit who mosey'd through the regular season because they live for the playoffs and don't especially care about anything else. I'd be more worried about them. Vancouver won the President's Trophy ACCIDENTALLY. I want SJ to succeed, but they're probably not going to if they get it in their heads that it only gets easier after trouncing the inexperienced Blues. |

Re: NHL Playoff Predictions: 2011-12 Edition
Point 1: 30 entrants. Holy crap (PS. Welcome back, lump. Try not to go 0-4 in the semis again. =P). I never expected this big a turnout here.
Point 2: Again, thank you so much to everyone who has donated. I might just raise the prize totals again! Point 3: Discussion already; I like it! Elliott being down may be good news for the Sharks, but you also have to look at the fact that Halak still had a 1.97 GAA, and a save % of .926; both insane stats. If it weren't for so many other goalies being insanely good, those would be 1st rank numbers any year. The problem is St. Louis really has no scoring whatsoever. They get by by letting the offense score 2 and shutting everyone down. This is the playoffs though. San Jose knows what the intensity level is like and knows what they have to do. St. Louis' last trip to the postseason was in 2007 where they got swept by Vancouver. Not to mention, practically no one from that team is on this current Blues team. Halak has the experience, there's no denying it. But San Jose, as a team, has multitudes more playoff experience and that will be helpful for them. Point 4: Thanks for the typo fixes. Although I don;t know where blue saw his.. I had it as emerald the whole time (I think). |
Re: NHL Playoff Predictions: 2011-12 Edition
San Jose has this outstanding record where every time they get into the playoffs they choke, so the favorite is St. Louis even though I don't care much for them really. It'll be exciting to see though :)
I'm rooting for another Pittsburgh (I like Crosby which is the only reason I care) or Chicago (their cup winning team couple years back isn't the same but I love Toews) cup this year because of the slim pickings. Hoping Dallas (life long Modano fan) and Colorado (life long Sakic fan) make it next year! |
Re: NHL Playoff Predictions: 2011-12 Edition
I would argue that NY and LA have better goaltending than St Louis, stats be damned.
Edit: Unless Halak Halaks, of course. |
