This will be the site primarily used unless the 2 participants decide on another way of playing.

Buy-ins:

Entry fee is 5k

(this is to deter inactive participants and 100% noobs, though noobs are more than welcome to enter)

Credits should be sent to ULTIMATE CHESS TOURN
(this will be the credit holding account)


Rules:

Rules are fairly simple. Once the rounds games are set, there will be 3 days of which to organise and play said tourney. Extensions in later rounds will most likely be permitted due to the credit prizes at hand.

The cliché no cheating rule, etc. Please don't get your GM uncle to 'pop over' on the same night you happen to be playing every game, this will suck the fun out of this tournament.

If you cannot contact the person that you're playing, or they just won't respond. A decision will be made, most likely favouring the person who is making an effort posting in the thread, pm'ing myself or Maggie, or showing evidence of a no-show.


Structure & Prizes:

Prize structure will of course depend on the amount of participants, but with the 5k buy-in, expect the grand prize to be somewhat spectacular ~___~

The structure will be a basic bracket, leading toward a final showdown.
The matches will all be standard, but be prepared for the last few matches to be best of 3 bouts to ensure that the final winner is indeed, the current chess champion of FFR!!

(there may/may not be a battle for 3rd position too, depending on the amount of entrants)

It would be between you and your opponent to arrange a suitable time to play. Keep in mind that chess.com also has a gameplay option where you play move for move and it is sent via email/message.

Could you make so there is some kind of division of skill? Like have people sign up fo a division theyd think best suits their skill cause the weaker players will be slaughtered.

Unfortunately Eeumi, without lengthy records on each player we have no way of determining skill levels. This will be something we could perhaps take into account for the next tournament. But there is still nothing stopping a great chess player from sandbagging a chess.com account to rape a division for their credits :c

Anyway, the site is giving me so much shit about registering. 25+ minutes and I haven't gotten an activation e-mail. I saw a "Register with Facebook" option, but they really don't like it when you deuce.

Edit: Ooh, link the two so I can play through Facebook Chess. This might prove a superior alternative...but did I mistype my password the same way twice?

Edit 2: FINALLY got it to work. Facebook connect worked, but I needed to use my "standby" handle of qbsuperstar03 to get through.

The site we're using gives a 3 day time period to make a move. Jae and I will set a time limit for how long each round will last and we'll let all of you know.

Yup. I don't think I've ever broken 1400 even when I was really into it.

Hence why I wanted a chess club both to get more people and to have more casual events to see where everyone's at.

Well we are up to almost ten and a half players!!! (one user has only paid 2/5 of their entry fee :3

Ideally we are striving for at least 16 players, as it would make brackets a lot easier to manage and draw up at the start.

We also ask that if people haven't already, please ensure that you don't have PMs turned off. As this will make it rather difficult to update you on the happenings as they unfold.


Tell your friends! We are only a few people away from a nice tourn and a very juicy 100k+ prizepool ~___~

PS: Wouldn't it be better to play live games instead of correspondence games? It can easily take over a month for such a game to finish. If you want the tournament to finish this year, it might be better to have live games (as long as it is not lightning games, I hate that).

Emerald: I think there was a little confusion.

The idea as stated in the op is, 3 day rounds + a day to organise the matches.

e.g.
- Brackets go up
- 1 day for people to organise match time with opponent
- 3 days for match to take place (to allow peoples schedules)
- Results tallied, next round commences, bracket updated


With 16 players, after 2 rounds (8 days), we would be down to the final 4, where matches would be best of 3. So round 3 wil probably be given a week to complete all 2/3 games before the Grand Finale.

That being said: There is no pressure on people to play blitz matches. If you and your opponent agree on one, that is cool, it is up to you. I, for one, refuse to play matches <5mins. Cos to be honest, i get slaughtered. I generally play chess with friends while drinking, and enjoy taking the occassional time to think (plus if I need to afk due to my daughter, it gives me that luxury :L ) So to any of my opponents, i'll probably opt for a 15|0/5/10 match, depending on how they are inclined. (though I am not against perhaps playing 10|0/5/10)

Once we get 16 players, as this is the first of these tourneys and it is unlikely that we will hit 32 players, Maggie and I will contact everyone and get the finer details ironed out so everyone is on the same page.


tl;dr
- rounds 3 days + day to organise matches
- 3rd round and grand finale will be approx 1 week long each
- if we hit 16 players, contact will be made, details ironed out, tourn might start early

I misread about the time format. I thought you meant to play by correspondence.

In this case, since the rounds are pretty quick, shouldn't we use the swiss format? It gives the chance to everyone to play the same number of games. Since there seem to be a huge range of skill, that should be more fun to everyone.

K, we have 15 players now, just haven't added q60 to maggies post. If it pleases everyone, I can chat to maggie and we can see about a slightly different format.

My only concern, is the time-frame of playing all those games. This is the 1st chess tourn, and should it go successfully, i'd be more inclined to make the 2nd one under a different format depending on how people go with playing multiple games in a short time period. By my calculations, this tournament with 16 participants will only take 3 weeks to end, at which point registrations can start for another.

Thoughts/ideas?

You can simply do a swiss tournament with 4 rounds. It will take the same amount of time, but everyone will get to play all 4 rounds. It will also be a lot easier to handle draws than with elimination.

This is exactly what I was saying in prochat. Swiss System works with any number of players, unlike brackets, which get ugly if you don't have anything close to a power of 2.

Swiss System, which is used for most chess tournaments in the US, works as follows: The list of players is sorted by approximate rating, with unranked players being listed alphabetically below the ranked list. The list is split in half, then the top player of the top half is paired against the top player of the bottom half, and so on. In the case of an odd number of players, the bottommost player is usually given a half-point bye, which means that in the next round they are paired up as if they had drawn. Winners get one point, drawers get one-half point, losers get zero points.

After this initial round, a list of people that won, lost and drew are drawn up, then each list is subjected to the same procedure: Dividing the list in half and matching up accordingly. The idea is that you eventually begin to play players of your skill level. After a set number of rounds, whoever has the most points wins.
