The Speedrunning Thread
After 50 pages of teh urn and some discussion over whether or not this should get its own thread, I figured "fuck it, this seems lively enough" and so here we are.

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Might as well put it here. I'm currently rewatching my favorite playaround TAS of all time. After having played this game for so long during my youth, I can definitely say it is a blast seeing it get destroyed. There's so many good parts:

Random TAS of Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 3. I love the playaround TAS videos |
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Well that's new. I never really understood the idea behind fighting playarounds that much anyway but I really enjoyed this one.
The Sagat and E. Honda streak is absolutely absurd haha. Dat Balrog juggle. |
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
He does some funny bugs too, like the one with Guy haha

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I used to do 16 star SM64 runs.
I can beat Megaman X in under 1 hr (50 minutes is about as fast as I can go). I used to practice that one a LOT. X2 I can beat under an hour as well but barely. I have a save in Final Fantasy 7 at the bottom of Northern Crater @ 8:58, which is probably my best RPG run. I don't know how fast people have gone, but I put a lot of time into that one (it's pretty much a minimum level run since I never level up anywhere ever other than exp from bosses) Final Fantasy 9 -> Excalibur 2 in 11 hours. I didn't put as much effort into this. Sub 10 hours is probably completely possible, I leveled up a bit in a couple spots just to make things easier for myself, but it's mostly not necessary since I abuse limit glove basically, very overpowered. |

p.s. rushy you're my 250th follower <3

As for my experiences with speedrunning...meh, still noob at it. Can't even get under 7h30m on Pokemon Ruby (Wattson and Norman can suck 37 dicks each) |
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I don't really do speedruns, but reading this thread is making me want to try something with PS2 Shinobi. Probably can't put together a great start-to-finish run, but could probably get a fantastic level time sum with a lot of retries.
But yeah I like watching people do them and I'm impressed with the optimization, but I don't like playing games to see how much of them I can skip, with the exception of games that are explicitly about that: minesweeper, Mario Kart, etc. |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I broke out my XBL Arcade copy of Hydro Thunder Hurricane last night. Somehow pulled a sub-1:52 out of my ass on Storming Asgard Gauntlet. That shit is hard as hell to optimize because there's a whole bunch of swells after the first checkpoint that eat through your boost gauge. 1:50 might be possible if I learn how to do the home stretch.

I might get into the speedrunning bandwagon and start helping on planning some more obscure titles (basically, I'll try running some crappy games in the spirit of AwfulGDQ, like Quattro Adventure). Don't really know where to start though. |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I also from time to time frequent speedrunslive to get my crave for random speedruns.
... Hoping to see a marathon from them again some time. I love tuning in to those week long ones. |

Hey, I speedrun Tetris Attack too. Also, Pokemon Puzzle League and Tetris. I suck at Dr.Mario, but I'll still do 0-10. (and SM64)

trick withheld by the SM illuminati finally coming to life after years.
incredibly hard and precise, and the cost of failure is huge. but with practice really consistent. Even got it in an RTA. #metagame |
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Interesting that the programmers didn't think someone would try to do that.
Welp, you learn something new every day. |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I know you can get a finish orb when Yoshi eats a Chargin' Chuck (so sayeth the tool-assisted runners). Never beat SMW, though. Beating Morton's Castle was like winning the lottery for me.
Anyone here buy Hydro Thunder Hurricane for Xbox Live Arcade? Protip: Don't use Razorback on Seoul Stream Expert. The best path requires a shit ton of air control to nail, and it's very easy to lose speed while you get up to the shortcuts, particularly the one in the shopping mall. Cutthroat is a better choice, or Rad Hazard if you're a masochistic fuck that doesn't like driving in straight lines. |
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I have a break for a week, so I'm gonna try to learn a real Zelda game (thinking a 2D one, probably one of the Oracle games) :D

Wait there's a boss skip in MMX?
I've whored that game six ways from sunday and I don't even know of this |
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Also is there a way, somehow, to have a side-by-side speedrunning competition? Like video chat but with two people's screens up at once, speeding the same game etc?
|
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
You can open up two videos or live streams in different windows and just start them at the same time. People do that pretty often to stream races or show a comparison between their live run and the WR.
|
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Ahhhh apparently Armored Armadillo in the boss gauntlet stage is skippable
|
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Hence why i havent spent time learning it either, takes too much perfect. Plus it's at the very end of the game ;_; |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Anybody who likes Final Fantasy speedruns might like to know of a marathon happening this coming weekend: http://www.crystalsforlife.ca/
Honestly this site is like a million times better organized than any of the main SDA ones. All relevant info is up top and you can organize the stream/chat/donate windows any way you feel like. Twitch viewing is also an option and you can even keep me company in the chat again. I guess they're just going to do it via Poxnor's personal stream rather than making up a new one for the marathon so subscribe or whatever all the cool kids do nowadays: http://www.twitch.tv/poxnor |

Re: The Speedrunning Thread
I'm going to speedrun Sonic Riders for the World Wildlife Fund in a week as a part of a speedrunning marathon. So far it's taken me about an hour to go through both storylines, although I've a had a few hiccups with Sky Road, so I've been trying to improve consistent wins on that track. Also been speedrunning Lost Kingdoms 2 as well. Got that around 22 min. I'd like to get that sub 20 mins, but that's just being hopeful.

did a speedrun on a game by PROTODOME which is also one of my favorite chip artists

Anyway, have a thing to get you thinking. Of note, Zelda games in general are difficult to optimize because of enemy spawn locations being extremely unpredictable. Yes, it's a TAS, but here's a few tricks I've pulled off on the Game Boy Color before inflicting this: -Doing level 5 before level 4 -Slaying all four Golden Beasts to get a ring that doubles sword damage, hit me up if you wanna know how to get them to show (there's also a ring that lets you kill the floor boss in the final dungeon with four bomb hits instead of five) -Not needing to pursue the "favor chain" at all to get the level 2 sword, an activity that is mandatory in Ages. On the other hand, Ages you can get the upgraded sword before the fifth dungeon, and trust me, you'll want that extra power. -Hopping an extra tile while using the Roc's Feather (only works with pits) -Using a bomb to hit the crystal switch in the Tower of Winter instead of going to the trouble of getting the boomerang (though the boomerang does make getting the Power Bracelet easier) The one trick I have yet to master is hopping between the dragon's hands while scoring hits, and the Great Moblin fight in Seasons can drag on for quite a while if you don't have the timing down. |
Re: The Speedrunning Thread
Yeah, I am actually working on Seasons, although at this point I can't even do the full game yet :p I'd definitely like to talk with you about it sometime, seems like you know some very useful stuff.
