Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

My school recently decided to host a talent show for the entire school starting on April 19th, with auditions starting and ending between April 4th - April 5th. Being the lazy bum I am in school, most of the time I slacked off in class whenever it involved computers and started playing some good old FFR from browser. Call me attention whore, but usually half the class will go looking at my screen just sharding their pants in amazement, and then the teacher will kick me out of the room. (lol) anyways, a couple of people knew how good I was at the game and told me to go sign up for the talent show, so I did. And you know what, they made me the opening act because mine was unique, had music, and well, the rest was either dancing, singing, or playing an instrument.

So, this is where I need your help guys. The school is allowing me to play for 15 minutes on-stage with a 20 meter flat-screen before I have to get kicked off due to time constraints. I need you guys to construct your best and favorite music setlist from FFR here. Only 2 rules:

1. you cannot have any swearing in any of the songs. No vulgar.
2. adding all the song lengths together cannot be more than 13 minutes (considering I need 2 minutes to set up and take down)

everything else is freelance. You can have as many songs as you want in your setlist, any combination, and as many setlists as you want. The first one in the setlist will be my opening song and the last in the setlist will be my final song.

If your setlist is chosen for the Talent Show, you get 50,000 Credits
You have until 8:00AM EST this Friday (7:00AM Server Time) to submit your lists, at which I will choose the winner and send the credits.

EDIT: Just as a short edit, if you want to put songs in your setlist but can't due to the time constraint, post them anyway. I might get a chance on-stage to play one more song.

I believe you should be progressive, slowly making your viewers' diapers grow larger and larger.

1: {Rose}
2: Purple
3: A FLOWER GARDEN
4: Twister
5: La Campanella

Assuming your school consists of mostly mainstream music people, I think this'd do pretty well. + you get a good laugh from AFG!

I would actually NOT do songs that are just hypergrind bullfuckshitcockdumps like grind2. They're great files but I'd stick to songs where you can actually tell what's going on (for a layman) -- where you can see how the arrows fit the song and hear the keytaps. IMO that's more interesting to a bystander who knows nothing about the game.

IMO yo man's list is pretty good and resembles something I might recommend

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

Only problem with VBeta is that it's super long, repetitive, and the novelty wears off quickly. Go for files that have higher cooless/time ratios, haha

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

That sounds awesome! Taking a look at your level ranks, I think I can make an alright set list. I'm thinking longer songs with a bit of JS would really interest viewers. Constraining it to the 13 minute time limit (and assuming you probably won't be super warmed up when you play) here is what I got:

UMAD? (1:17)
Southern Cross (3:42)
Lawn Wake I (2:29)
Banned Forever (3:36)

Total time: 11 minutes, 4 seconds

UMAD would probably be a decent warmup, and all of the other songs are fairly long and are surely difficult enough to awe those in the audience. All of these are files you've AAA'd, but I'm sure even if you mess up a bit it won't make any difference to them. Plus you have a little extra time to play Excite Bike, which is the greatest song on FFR.

I just feel that since a bunch of random people are watching, 200+ BPM streams and really fast rolls seem to impress people. As for CIA Rave, it's a good song to open up with in general for people to get their groove on. XD

List round 2 (slightly more difficult)

1: Etude on a Nimbus
2: Autumn Insomnia Session
3: Mermaid Island
4: Piano Etude (Demon Fire) [Oni]
5: Death Piano

This list is assuming you want to show the crowd the general extent of the difficulty of the files without playing something stupid like RATO. And they're all 100% Gr9 songs

consistent AAA's usually land around 65's, but it just doesn't really matter. I'm in that zone where if they can't do it but they can comprehend it, I can get a perfect score. If I don't get a perfect score, they still crap their pants at how many notes there are and how many perfects I'm getting.

I wanted to play The Games We Played full edition for this but got bummed when they said 15 minutes was the maximum.

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

You should finish with songs that will make you struggle but at the same time, can just read them. Maybe in the 65-92 range for you.
Pick at least one song with jacks. (Grist would be cool)
Pick at least one with jumpstream.
Start off with the easiest to the hardest.
Pay attention to the song itself.
300 would be interesting with the speed-up section.

EDIT :
1. Parousia (2:08)
2. 300 (2:20)
3. Twister (3:20)
4. Grist (2:08)
5. Phi-dentity Crisis (3:31)
Total : 13:32 (a little too long...)

Make sure to check this link for the real time of each songs : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...aTXlHNGc#gid=0
You will also need to calculate the time between each song to load them.

Good luck! ;)

Because it's for a talent show, and people consider you good just by sight, you should open with something that would look visually impressive but very manageable by your skill level. You can also plan to entertain your audience with the songs themselves rather than your skill at the game too (even though, just about everything you play will seem impressive to casual players).

Blackout [Breathe Carolina] - (2:02 / 2:02); this song has been all over the radio and it's likely that it will appeal to a lot of people. It's a good opener, and it's pretty easy for you (although, likely will appear difficult to the crowd).

XP Sounds Attempt - (1:45 / 3:47); interesting song choice that could make people think you're weird as hell, aha. It might be a bit comical for people to hear Windows sounds pieced together in a song, but if anything, it's a bit more constant and harder for you. Visually, this won't look too much harder than Blackout, but it will keep you a bit more interested at a 58.

asdfmovie - (2:23 / 6:10); another one that is really silly -- the asdfmovie series is extremely popular on YouTube and lucky for you, the chart is more difficult for you, and in appearance to the crowd. You'll get to have a good time while giving a really good laugh :D

Ambient Angels - (1:59 / 8:09); at this point, I'd consider this part of the finale of your set. Now you're trying to just blow people's minds, and with a song this energetic/fast/dense (yet, only a 69 in difficulty that you have AAA'd), you'll be able to take this song on, trash it, and freak the fuck out of people.

Mario Minor - (3:55 / 12:04); this brings everything full circle for you. A ridiculously hard song to your audience, a hard song for you to impress, a theme that everyone knows (Super Mario), and a really long finale to engage everyone watching you.

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

Halogens playlist sounds pretty solid.

Didnt pick songs based on time, didnt feel like messing with that, but tried to keep them fairly short. So I just picked some songs you could use as warm ups / difficulty build up to the harder songs you could end with as well as decent song choices. Hard songs are not easy to pick because the song choices are a real turn off imo in a situation like this.

Warm ups:
-Classic: A Beautiful Storm or All of Me or Can Can(Piano Version)
-Misc: Ievan polka or Purple
-Rock: inside the fire or Blackout [Breathe Carolina]
-Arcade: Gym Leader(RBY) or Dot Matrix Hero
-Dance2: Over the Frail Dream or Nitrx

Higher Level:
-of course you need and need me (for difficulty, song may be a sketchy choice)
-Ambient Angles
-Ultrasounds
-Freedom Dive

Hakulyte 04-17-2013 08:19 PM

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

I'll try with these:

1. On Conquest and Capture. (Introductory, short and got a decent difficulty spike.) 0:58
2. {Rose} (A standard chart to show.) 2:27
3. One Minute Waltz (A mix of blue note syndrome and more difficult charts) 1:46
4. Freedom Dive (Something that looks stupid hard for laughs and I just checked you have the token) 2:26

Time is only 7:37 (ignoring settings etc.) but I feel like you should use the rest of the time to explain what you're doing and transition without worries between songs in engine.

aaaaaan #3, this time with times on them!

1: Retro City (2:33) I'm putting this first as it sounds a bit more intense than Sirius, although it *looks* a bit easier than Sirius. I think the crowd will be more impressed with Sirius, but will like Retro City as a song better, is a good one to excite them.

2: Sirius (2:02) A nice, peppy song with lots of pretty colors, will be sure to wow your crowd with that!

3: A FLOWER GARDEN (2:02) You know you want to.

4: Tenimuhou (4:15) Super amazing climax-filled file. The crowd will be in a state of shock after this.

5: Playing SMW on Shrooms (3:05) For the reasons stated in the skype chat. Stupidly hard

P.S. WHHHYYY DONT YOU ANSWER MY QUESTION ON SKYPE WHY DO YOU HATE ME

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

Stealin Halogen's format. I tried aiming for songs that are short, around 2 minutes each and charts that look impressive but aren't necessarily hard except for the last two, hope you can do them.

Counter Strike Gun Sounds - (1:04 / 1:04); Brief. Kind of a novelty. Would serve as a good intro to the game. Starts off simple with single arrows but quickly gets harder with the elongated jack section, which would probably wow them for a bit.

New Windy Paradise - (2:14 / 3:18); A melodic, mid-tempo file that is supposed to represent the average difficulty for the game i.e not too hard. The song is good I think and the chart is pretty to look at. Could be any file really but this one I think is best suited.

May The Triforce Be With You - (1:57 / 5:15);
Familiar video game tune done in a rock style. Will sound good and will look good too because the jumpstream will make it seem like a blur to the audience and they'll be wondering what the hell is going on.

Strangeprogram - (2:06 / 7:21); This file sounds really intense and it shows off your trills and your stream at high speed. The middle section sounds really hyperactive with the high-pitched vocal and will probably make you look a bit weird.

Electro Rush V2 - (1:57 /9:17);Now for the big guns. The tune sounds pretty exciting, like a from spy movie scene and the burst in the intro will indicate a massive leap in difficulty that should wow your audience. The file is pretty eventful, has got good flow, is composed of various different sections from bursts to jacks to easy so it represents your skills very well and it has got one hell of a climax. Should kill em stone dead with this one.

One Minute Waltz - (1:46 / 11:03); The finale should be a grandstanding classical piece that makes you look like a virtuoso. OMW would follow on nicely from the mega stream ending of ERV2. I could have also suggested La Campanella but that would take you slightly over the time limit.

I've wondered for a long time what would happen if I were to display my FFR skills on something Britain's got talent etc and what the reaction would be. It'd probably be disastrous. Someone else should totally go on a tv talent show though for the sake of the game go on.

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

I once played stepmania at a HS talent show years ago, quasar 1.5.. crowd went wild, some thought I was playing on autoplay, others gave me props and asked generic questions like "did you memorize that?" overall the cheer was worth it but only for one song.

some audience may lose interest after the first few songs with a mentality like "meh practice" but others will understand the concept and start their own experience with key smash who knows.. At least a good majority should have a general concept because of guitar hero/ rock band.

As for the song list suggestion.

1.)Amefuri Koneko- Short, to the point. doesn't involve common themes that are injunction with the rest of said set-list. A good opener, In my opinion would involve something grace note oriented. Because of controlled sequences, rather than starting off what appears to be "random" notes. Plus, The song sounds similar to Going on spring wind. Which, in return could be saved for later. (1:55)

2.)Purple- Excellent song choice to introduce the use of streams in a note chart. Its short enough of a song were it delivers an idea, but ends like it could have kept going. That's when the next choice would carry the similar theme but now giving the prospective to endurance. (1:01)

3.)Gradeus- Classic chart. Has been around for years on this site, and Gives a clear image of a "pinnacle" like play-style. sorta on terms with 'the best it can get' type of deal. Which in prospective comes from the fact the chart pushes the 1k note boundary. Plus, Jump chains in a chart rule. (2:33)

4.)For FFR- At this point the crowd has seen everything. And you know what I mean, There's obviously some variety, but in the terms of an audience, Not really. IMO use this as a half time turning-point. Saving what appears to be the most difficult section for last. And give the image of a "wall of notes" (2:00)

5.)Ambient angels- This introduction of jump Stream will carry on the ending of For FFR's Momentum by insinuating that a wall of notes carries on for extended periods because the JS in that chart is dense enough to display as such. (1:59)

6.)Holy Orders-Not only is the Song great for a final choice, but the step chart itself throws in all the other elements into one colossal performance and That little feeling of climax towards the end would really add a nice touch to everything. The trills, colored note streams, almost everything about it seems good for a finale, Pushing to almost 3k notes is also a plus side. (4:20)

Total Time- 13min 8sec~

Good luck!

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

Alternatively instead of having a range of difficulties you could just focus on longer, harder files. These one are pretty varied in their patterns and musical styles and would work together very well. Tenimuhou is probably my favorite song in the game right now.

Little God Ch@nnel - (4:16 / 4:16);

Tenimuhou - (4:15 / 8:31);

The Ordeal Becomes Great - (4.06 / 12:37);

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

Looks like I'm alone but I truly believe that you should only play one song, I've actually given this some thought myself and what I would do, and I really don't think most people will wanna sit there for 13 minutes to watch someone play this for a talent show. It'll definitely look good to them, but I also definitely feel like people will not want to sit there watching you play for such an extended period of time (think about other acts that you said people would be doing, singing/dancing will more than likely not take more than 5 minutes, if that). That being said, I saw AJ suggest Ambient Angels and would say that just playing that would be an AMAZING choice. Song choice is fairly critical because you don't want to play some pony shit and have people be all "wtf is this" and I don't think you should play any classical song just because there are those jerks who will think "yeah, go do that on a real instrument." But for Ambient Angels it's a very dance-y song and the vocals aren't high-pitched which I guess bothers some people? And it definitely gets harder as the song goes on which is great. Don't know if what I'm saying matters to you whatsoever xD But good luck with this, I probably wouldn't have been able to do this in front of school xP

Got in contact with my friend today at school and he agreed that he will try to record the performance with his phone tomorrow. So pumped for it.

You all still have time to voice your opinion on what you think would be the best setlist for the performance. Even if you want to debate changes to others setlists, I may just end up using that one instead and then both people will get some credits :)

Four Blocks Maddness
Dance and Zeal
Gotta Catch 'Em All
Undiscovered Colors
Twister

Not sure how that times out exactly but if I recall the length of each chart correctly, it times out to be less than 20 minutes. The idea that the songs gradually are getting more difficult to show off just how crazy but simple the game is.

The other thing is that playing one chart, specifically The Games We Played could be tough considering the offset problem.

One more list from me, no details for this one, just throwing ideas out now:

1: Intersect Thunderbolt
2: A FLOWER GARDEN (Really, play this file lmao)
3: Flight of the Bumblebee (As terrible as it'd be to play, you know the crowd would love it.)
4: Tenimuhou
5: Almost There

you did not just seriously trash FFR on FFR

lol

FFR loads a lot faster than my SM if I carried it around on a jumpdrive. Also, SM is a little bit too flashy and FFR would probably be less eye-straining.

in b4 ffr gets DDOSed again and you won't be able to load a single song

yeah man I love having to connect to the internet to play a rhythm game that uses a terribly unoptimized flash engine, playing shitty newgrounds music and shitty files that barely scrape by the judges because everyone is afraid to say "your file fucking sucks"

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

Stay away from files with flashy backgrounds. We all know the ones.

You can also use your setup time to explain the concept of the game. Engage your audience a little bit before launching into your performance. If you're the type that can talk to people while you play, mention stuff like how it's been around for 10 years and has over 1300 songs in all. You know, sell it a little bit.

I think your set list should conform to the following standards:

First song: Familiar to a lot of people, fairly easy. You mentioned you had a lot of song and dance numbers coming after you, so let their song choices dictate what you open with to engage the crowd...or go totally against the grain. Your call. You don't need to AAA to impress the uninitiated. You mentioned you can AAA everything under Oni get with regularity, so try Four Blocks Madness. Everyone knows that tune.

Second and third songs: Ramping up the difficulty a bit, some more eclectic choices. Depending on how many Japanese speakers slash anime fans you have in the audience, you may want to steer clear of "those" songs. Gravity Blast with its color gimmicks is an excellent choice here IMO, as you can give a brief introduction to the art of the stepfile. You might also cover the history of FFR with Caprice, but make sure to use the genre wheel when picking it. (I'm of the opinion that this file is better off with BNS, given the red background.)

Fourth song, fifth if time permits: Balls out time. These are the master class files--pick from the unlockables (secret, purchased, tokens) if you can. Otaku Speedvibe Oni, Tenimuhou, Freedom Dive, Holy Orders, Hellhounds On My Trail--these are all good choices. Mention that you can ONLY play these files for yourself if you sign up and get good. Stay away from piano pieces.

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

TWWW is a horrible choice, disgustingly poor use of gimmicks along with a terrible chart that only makes the game look like even more shit than it already is. Bad choice.

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

STORYTIME

It was the night of February 23, 2010, just after 7:00 PM.

I played Stepmania for a talent show once...I played an old chart I had made for "Red Wings Over Baron" (ok chart by today's standards...not great, but meh...and no, you can't have it) and was not warmed up for it. And I was the opening act, too...but for reasons being that no one else was doing their act with a computer. I could tell the crowd was really into it while I was playing, too.

As great of a performance everyone thought that was (I AA'ed with just over 290mil), I didn't win. I finished 2nd place, losing only to the school's cross-dressing basketball team doing a hilariously awful rendition of "Stop Right There" (or was it "Stop Right Now"?). Well, props to the basketball team because when you see someone kick major ass at SM, you need to put on a GOOD closing act and I think they succeeded...by my school's standards. The money I won ended up saving the Breakfast Club in the process. The story at the time was that they were on the verge of closing down, and when they saw me playing they just decided to put me in because my SM skills would help them save the club if I did good enough. Kept them going for the rest of the year, I think.

It was a good night, to say the least...both for me and the Breakfast Club.

I'd love to do something like that again if possible.

Now, about that setlist...I'll try and stick to Video Games.
Start with an explanation of what FFR is while you're setting it up, then launch right into it.
1. 600 AD in Piano (Classic / 47 / 3:00)
2. Jazzman - Super Mario Bros (Arcade / 52 / 1:33)
3. Monstrous Turtles! (Arcade / 62 / 3:35)
4. May The Triforce Be With You (Arcade / 66 / 1:57)
5. Gotta Catch 'Em All (Arcade / 73 / 3:34)
Total Length: 13 minutes, 39 seconds (oh crap, it's too long)

P.S. If you're at a party and haven't drank any alkeyhol yet, I'd play TWWW just for kicks.

Re: Friday Talent Show FFR Setlist

Dunno if you're still taking suggestions, but here's my choice for an FFR setlist.

1. Introduction (1:02 / 1:02)
2. Retro City (2:33 / 3:35)
3. Ambient Angels (1:59 / 5:34)
4. Mephisto Waltz (3:13 / 8:47)
5. Playing Super Mario World While Taking Mushrooms (3:05 / 11:52)

I think it's a good mixture of genres while adding a steady increase in difficulty. Plus, I think the audience will get a good laugh at the last song. But it's up to you.

EDIT: nvm, didn't realize the deadline was 8:00 AM today. Whoops.

I'd like to thank everyone for your opinion and participation in this event, I wouldn't have been able to figure out a good setlist for the Talent Show without you guys! I had an extra 2 minutes to perform, so I decided after my ending song on the setlist, that I would finish it off with Tell (practically the national anthem morning music in any school), something everyone can relate to.

Again, thanks for all who submitted, but there can only be one winner:

Credits for song choices shall be rewarded even if your personal setlist was not used, and thank you Mr. Halogen for taking the time and effort to create a stellar list for me. (You could technically consider this as the 1st,2nd,3rd,4th)

For everyone else, if you have posted a setlist but it was not used, you have been paid 1000 credits for your time and effort.

Gonna try and get in contact with my friend over the weekend here because he was supposed to be recording the show and see what he's got. It was an absolute moshpit. And when I say moshpit, I literally mean it acted like a moshpit. My principal had to step up to the stage after my performance to calm the audience down.

Oh wow, that sounds ridiculous! Congrats on the great reception of the performance, it's nice to see people blown away by skill at rhythm games.

I wonder if anyone from your school will take a crack at FFR after seeing that. Oh and, thanks for the credits!

Awesome! Thanks for the credits -- it sounded like you had a fantastic time! :)

Also, the reason why I was able to come up with a really solid set list is because I've played FFR in front of a large crowd at high school, when I was trying to help advertise the rhythm gaming club. The only difference was, we all had our own individual areas in the cafeteria area -- I want to say I attracted nearly 100 students to our area, haha.

You have no idea. Picture a rock concert with smoke & stage lights, yeah. It was like that. Whoever was working the stage lights did it absolutely beautifully for not knowing the songs.

2. Thanks for the credits!
3. An idea: next time you see that guy, see if you can convince him to find him a job doing...whatever he did while you were playing...professionally, if possible. That sounds and will probably look awesome when you upload the video.
