Parents need to take responsibility. R-rated movies, M-rated games, and Explicit Lyrics CDs are not meant for thirteen-year olds, mmkay? Wait until you're 18.

Your parents have every right to know what you're doing on the Internet. Don't think they're paranoid and don't think they hate you. They're taking responsibility for you. It's called parenting. Some day you might understand.

If you're not even 18 yet, stop complaining. 18 is the magical age where you become legally independent. Anything before that and you're dependent on your parents.

I started watching R-rated movies, M-rated games and Explicit Lyrics CDs when I was atleast in the 4th grade, but that's because my parents made sure I wasn't making any stupid moves in public - which actually did happen once, and I'm glad it never happened again.

I remember I had pretty much seen over 1000 people die(TV), 4 shootings down the street, and heard every curse word by 1st grade, as had everyone else in this poor city of mine. My parents dont care what I do at all unless its something illegal. They try to limit my freedom but to no avail; but its good to have parents who care sometimes, however annoying it may be.

i've been watching r-rated movies/playing m-rated games/looking at hardcore necrobestiality since like age 10.

i turned out okay.

but for serious, it is good that parents are protective...they really want what is best and **** like that. but the OP's parents seem like they think everything on the internet is bad, which is extremely ignorant. i really can't stand it when people think that violence in movies/games/music/internet make murderers out of children. that is so stupid.

also- my parents are extremely lax on me being on the internet and ****. but they were really ****ing strict on me when i was like a little kid, whici turned out for the better.

every kid is diffferent and you really can't have a difinitive way of how to raise them, because it is really up to the kid to decide how he lives...amirite? dunno.

Hope you're not being sarcastic.

That's pretty much the entire point of rating a game "T", yeah.

I definitely think that most parents are a little too over protective. It really don't matter what movies, music, television, internets, etc your child is exposed to, and when they are exposed to it so much as that you make sure to teach them the difference between what they see and hear and what's really happening in the real world. For example, people don't want to let their kids play games like GTA and Mortal Kombat because of the violence and illegal stuff and because "it's going to teach them that these things are ok." That's why you need to step up as a parent and make sure they know that "yes, in this game, you can steal a car, or kick someone in the face, but in real life you cannot, because your actions have consequences." And you need to be sure that they know and understand these things, rather than saying, "Got it? Ok, good."

Did you see what he said?

He said he can't have explicit CDs but he can have explicit MOVIES.

Censorship is rediculous. Luckily when I was a minor my parents let me do whatever I wanted for the most part, and whatever they didn't, I got away with anyway.

And I am such a bad, bad liddle tyke now for all the tits and spilled guts i've seen :O

Re: Paranoid Parents & the Internet

My parents used to be extremely paranoid about talking to strangers online. They would have flipped out if they had ever caught me in IRC or some chatroom for one reason or another. I wasn't even allowed to have AIM until I was 17 or 18 (after many arguments for it on my part).

Even now I'm afraid to talk about my online friends to my parents, even though I have some very good ones that I've known for years. They've just instilled in me some fear that they will get angry at me for communicating with them, even though they've gotten over that for the most part.

It's reasonable to be concerned about your child so that they don't get into any dangerous situations, but the media blows it WAY out of proportion. Finally my parents came to realize that the Internet is just like the real world - there are strangers, some of them potentially malicious, but for the most part they're harmless, just like any given population in the real world. Kids need to learn how to deal with both; not be completely cut off from it just because there is a small percentage of danger.

Re: Paranoid Parents & the Internet

well i don't have a problem like that...back when i was still a kid, my parents understood...i guess the most concern comes from my grandpa...

but yea i hate that not enough parents are concerned...and lots of ppl are extremely stupid with the internet. idno how many ppl on myspace just randomly post their digits in bulletins when they have thousands of friends on there...not very smart...

but i think other than family, my bf has the most concern about me on the internet...

but i kno the internet is just like the real world...of course there will be evil ppl...but there's also good ppl, and i kno tons of good ppl...

i agree that parents need to take responsibility, however, 18 years old to play a M-rated game? come on now, thats pushing it a little bit, they're not that bad.
i agree with you semi on the R-rated movies, i would at least wait till my child was around 14-15 to let him/her watch.
and about the internet, i agree with you 100%. they're your parents, they most likely bought you the computer, and if they didnt it doesnt matter, your in their house they should know whats going on either way. case closed.

Re: Paranoid Parents & the Internet

My mom used to ask, "do you know this person in real life?" all the time (I obviously lied, seeing as I only knew the screennames of two people I knew IRL back then). Unfortunately, this paranoia rubbed off on me, and I never gave my real name out to people on the Internet. Now I freely give my name (and sometimes my town) out to people on the Internet.

I'm more likely to get my ass kicked walking outside than get a stalker on me who's going to rape/mug/etc. me, seeing as it's pretty much the same thing anyway.

It's all about insecurity.

I just about never do anything explicit on the Internet, yet I almost always switch to a really text-y screen when my parents are around. Why? They might take something the wrong way because they raised me to be insecure and cautious about these things by the examples they set on these situations. What, want an example? I was watching Melancholy one time and my parents saw the characters on the beach. Just bikinis and bathing suits. She said half sarcastically, "oh, are you watching one of those Anime pornos?" I just sighed (even though Melancholy isn't exactly the best example of an Anime without sexual things in it, and right when she left there was a "demonstration" of that. But there we go--nothing I don't see, nothing I shouldn't be allowed to see, and nothing that should be hidden from me, for the sake of promoting sexual security).

There's a difference between what your kid is comfortable seeing and what parents are comfortable letting their kids see. And unfortunately, these don't always mesh together.

Although I wouldn't ever let a kid of mine watch porn out of the blue, that's a bit different. I'd probably say something like, "just don't watch anything explicit when I'm around and we're cool." XD

My aunt gave her 12 year old kids Playboy magazines. Why? Well, to promote sexual security! It's not like they were things they never saw before, might as well get them comfortable with the fact that it's normal for boys to have sexual desires and it's nothing to hide! She even said that she had quite a few discussions with her boys about sexual stuff over the years after that. Hmm, wonder why?

Me? Goddamn I'd never talk to my mom about that kind of stuff. I don't know how she react and frankly I don't want to experiment. She never showed me a reason why I should be secure about my sexuality around her, so I'm not.

And kids hear curse words all the ****ing time, why try to hide them from them? They're just ****ing words and they're something a mature adult should be comfortable hearing, and at the age where their kids hear those words all the time and probably even use them in public, why bother censoring them at home?

Same exact thing here. Now I don't care if the person knows my name, and my parents used to always ask if I knew that person, now they never do. I usually just give the state where I live, if they live there too then I'll give up some more information.
