lol I'll do this next batch, just submit "safe" dumb artfiles to standard artists.
None of the judges seem to want my attempts at doing something different, so I'll just whore for SAP for a while instead lol

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

there's absolutely nothing wrong with doing something different, but different also doesn't mean stuff that was done back in 2004. stepping has unfortunately gone into so much detail that the fundamentals of fun value don't really apply much anymore. so we gotta cater to what the players want.

There's something wrong to me when so much emphasis is put on a nebulous idea of "technical detail" that "fun factor" is considered a non-issue.
Hello? This is a game.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not whining about my own files' judgements. (To be brutally honest I'd probably have rejected my own Mo-Ko-Mo-Core file for being too repetitive)
But I still think it's weird that people aren't even judging based on what is fun anymore, much less thinking about what is fun for others as well as themselves.

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

In "technicality"'s defense though, a file that has a set structure and shows a decent amount of effort is generally, by most players, far more appreciated. A file that pays attention to detail and embellishes the chart by adding clever visual effects whether it be with color or accentuation goes quite a long way these days. Yeah, it's a game, but people have played this game so much they want to see something appealing once in a while which becomes quite refreshing.

Take Kono Spoon for example.

Yeah some people might see it as a joke, yeah it got simfile of the year for 2011, whatever.

Some of the accents in that song are quite clever, different sounds are emphasized with different colors, and overall is a great challenge. This is a great example of how modern charts help add more replay value to songs.

The problem with more simple charts is that the only difference with them and 90% of files already in game is the song choice. I realize it's difficult to try and add variation when you only have 4 arrows to work with, along with no freezes or mines, but the fact that people are trying to make it different through the little means they have is really nice to see and people want to keep playing the game. Otherwise it gets really old after 7+ years.

I do however entirely agree with you that fun factor doesn't seem to be taken into consideration while judging anymore. Honestly if I were judging strictly based on fun factor, some files that don't make it in maybe would have, though my acceptance rate would probably be below 20%.

hi19 i'm confused as to what you mean by 'safe dumb artfiles.' when i think of 'artfile' i think of something interesting, clever and fun, and considering them the norm or bad seems absolutely contradictory (like, 'ugh i'm sick of all these generic unique files'). unless you consider artfiles something different? and that CJQ was some kind of elusive 'fun' file people don't make anymore? because that was just the epitome of repetition and lame boring rhythms to a terrible song no offense dude =/

and yeah kono spoon is awesome

Agreed

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

Safe dumb artfiles being stuff like Staring at my Spaceship. Love that file to death, but it doesn't do anything new as far as FFR is concerned.

CJQ is unique for FFR because there are no 300 bpm stream files. Simple as that. (Rave7 would kind of count, except that the stream is the easy part. And Almost There is more a trill file than a stream file)
Just like Mmmmmm and Mo-Ko-Mo-Core are repetitive, sure, but as far as FFR is concerned they are unique because there is not a single long stamina file in FFR right now.
But overall I'm getting the impression that these files are unique to FFR because FFR judges simply don't want them. Guess I should see the lack of files like that as a sign, rather than a problem to be fixed lol

So instead I'll stop trying and just submit fun stuff that doesn't really break any boundaries for the game (my Reminders file from this batch is a good example of that kind of file. One of only two files to get a 3 SAP rating this batch as far as I know, but it's pretty ****ing generic in the overall scape of the game... 140 bpm JS with some bursts, haven't seen that shit before!)

In general I think a lot more than most people about how a file fits into the game as a whole- FFR could use with catering to a more wide variety of player, but if the current judges don't agree with that I'll stop trying to fight the system.

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

Staring at my spaceship isn't anything new, but executes everything people like in convincing fashion apparently. It's just what the song delivers and song choice is a massive factor in how your file will end up.

There is a way to make long jumpstream files or 300 bpm stream simfiles, just nobody has perfected it yet. You know what I'll take you up on that challenge. Next regular/hard batch I'm going to submit a 300 bpm simfile.

You know, I gotta respect that attitude. I eagerly await what you come up with!

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

it's not that the system doesn't consider or want different types of files in the game -- i rather doubt it's as targeted a conspiracy as you seem to think. CJQ isn't fun and everybody and their mother is sick of the berzerker. it's challenging to make a 300bpm stream file that would be of high enough caliber for FFR (rave7 is a VERY good file, for the record. i understand though that you want a song for which the 'point' is 300bpm streams, not merely a segment). it's possible to do, but you basically made what seems like the easiest and least interesting choice of file to accomplish that task, next to maybe disregard. make a legitimately entertaining file centered around fast streams and you'll see a lot more love for it. a file not being well-received doesn't mean the judges are out to get you or are predisposed to auto-reject certain types of charts -- it seems perfectly reasonable to me to hold something that difficult to a higher standard of quality.

edit: ninja'd by kommi, whom i was literally about to say could almost certainly pull off a 300bpm stream file. how bout that

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

Okay, fair enough. I guess I should take that as a challenge too then.

Off to the internet to find a good song choice for a stamina file~

kommisar 05-14-2012 07:42 PM

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

Yeah half the challenge is finding a 300 bpm song that doesn't sound like shit that would make a good simfile lmao

I might have to make one if I can't find anything.

Last 300 bpm song I made was Ultrasounds!! and that only had one 300 bpm stream.

hi19hi19 05-14-2012 07:48 PM

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

lol I did look for a while for good 300 bpm streams, all I could come up with is Berzerker/other core metal with double bass, or chiptune arpeggios which never really felt right.

Didn't really look that hard for a good stamina file song, I just chose some generic Sharpnel and icyworld'd it lol
So I bet I can still find a nice song for a stamina file, but 300 bpm streams is a really hard one >_<

who_cares973 05-14-2012 07:51 PM

Re: Queue/Batch Discussion Thread v2 (Submission Closed)

CjQ wasn't rejected because it was unique to ffr or because it wasn't an art file. It was rejected because the streams are terrible. The file in general is boring and the song is bad. Difference!
