Day 850: Nurture by Porter Robinson (Album Choice: dAnceguy117)
I was expecting this one to be worse but I guess a seven year album hiatus did this guy some good because this is a significant improvement in my opinion. Album is about the same length but has 2 more songs and thus SHORTER songs and that makes a world of difference. Also, in general this seems way less tailored to those explosive "when the E hits" moments (not that it isn't chockful of them) and there's a lot more pop structure to these tracks, as well as a good amount of variation (some tracks borderline sound like Four Tet). I'd still argue the album is a tad bit too long, but really, this is pretty damn good. Fuck, I guess I'm a basic Asian bitch now. Time to review the next Excision album that comes out! Day 851: A Tiny House, In Secret Speeches, Polar Equals by Sweet Trip
This was decent. This was enjoyable. Like my ADHD brain always complains, it was too long. I have a lot of hipster friends claiming that this album sucks and that they fell off hard but I don't hate this at all. There were plenty of great tracks that went on for too long, and then some great tracks that were the right length. Nothing stuck out as excessively bad. Okay whatever. Day 852: Playground In A Lake by Clark
Apparently this guy has been consistently releasing shit every two years but the last time I listened to his shit was when I was on jury duty in 2017... Aw fuck that means I'm probably gonna have to go at some point soon. Anyways, this is not the danceable acid-y tech house IDM type stuff I'm used to, this is... mostly just modern classical. There's some electronic usage in there, but very sparingly, and it's not like other modern classical producers avoid that shit altogether either. As for this album itself? This... is meh. It's background noise that I'd hear at some fancy gathering. I liked some of the dronier bits but all-in-all, forgettable. Maybe I'm just not high IQ or boomer enough yet. Or maybe I'm biased bc my ass wants to dance right the fuck now Saturday please come sooner. Best Track: The ending one (also known as Life Outro) Rating: 5/10 |

Day 845: Inside (The Songs) by Bo Burnham (Album Choice: barfood)
I don't watch a lot of standup in general, so I couldn't give you an answer on the quality of any specials without feeling dishonest and/or underqualified. Most of the people I hear referred to as greats such as Louis C.K, Bill Burr or Alex Jones/Bill Hicks I don't find to be funny onstage whatsoever, and I find these guys funny in their roles OFF the stage. Louie was one of the most important television shows ever (before the whole masturbation thing) and definitely changed the landscape for what constitutes a sitcom permanently, I think F is For Family is hilarious and heartwrenching, and of course, the conspiracy theory on the last guy is hilarious. But anyways, onto this album. I have not watched any of Burnham's other specials, so I can't even make that comparison. What I do remember him for most recently is his role as a pediatrician in Promising Young Woman, which I think he nailed, but most importantly, he created and starred in the MTV one-season wonder Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous, which is still fucking hilarious and should've been on Comedy Central or FXX or something, not the fucking Jersey Shore/Teen Mom/Ridiculousness channel for crying out loud. This album is two-thirds as long as the Netflix special, which seems crazy upon first glance but from what I can tell this guy's specialty is combining music with standup so that's less odd when put into context. It also makes sense why so many of these songs seem to end without so much as a fade out, instead just smash cutting to silence or into the next song immediately. And as a standalone special without the accompanying visuals or spoken setups/punchlines, this is... not my thing. Another guy I know described it as woke Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace and he's honestly pretty right. This shit isn't funny most of the time, and I can't even tell if it's trying to be funny or if he's just trying to be didactic in hopes of getting any potential audience to nod and agree. The production is also very, very bland. Some of the more synthesizer heavy songs are fun, but not all, and a majority of the more folksy singer-songwriter cuts didn't even make me crack a smile. I'm gonna have to revisit this album after I watch the special, in the meantime Best Track: Bezos I Rating: 4/10 |

Day 846: Call Me If You Get Lost by Tyler, The Creator
Gotta keep my entry level art hipster taste up to date. This feels largely like a throwback to the pre-Flower Boy days, albeit a lot more mature and definitely less bloated (though still somewhat bloated, although it's the longer tracks that tend to be the best oddly enough). It's not as good as the last two. Actually I lied, it's better then regular Igor but not when you pitch shift that one. Anyways, I enjoyed it, we'll see if I love it more over time. Best Track: Sweet / I Thought You Wanted to Dance Rating: 7.5/10 |

Day 847: Celestia EP by Durante & Hana
Someone told me that Grimes dropped a new album and morbid curiosity hit me but it looks like it's just a remix album so instead I clicked one of the collaborators and decided to check out their latest release. And this is short but I like it pretty good. Basically what I need after a long night of sweaty minimal techno. Best Track: title Rating: 8/10 |

Day 848: Sin City by Ski Mask The Slump God
I remember when this guy beat the shit out of Lil B right around the time he released a mixtape or album or something called The Bigger Man, then caught major internet rap nerd backlash. Funny stuff. But nobody cares about that controversy now, and people still adore his music. I've never been a huge fan nor a hater, and this release pretty much just confirms my same opinion. There are some great ideas in here, there's a good variance of moods, but the production is pretty poor throughout, and although I like that the songs are short and don't overstay their welcome, they could definitely use a little bit of just, like, fleshing out these ideas. You have everything from hard party bangers to more melodic cuts in here but with few exceptions, they feel underdeveloped. He should beat up Lil B again just to catch the public eye. Day 852: The Turning Wheel by SPELLLING
On the other hand, this one is as of right now highly overrated by the hipster masses. I enjoyed a few tracks, mostly the ones that sound more like prog rock, even though I hate prog rock. The rest of the time I was either annoyed or bored. What is this supposed to sound like? An opera? A broadway play? A Disney movie? I can appreciate that a ton of craftsmanship went into this, and when it was good (about 3 tracks, maybe 4) I legitimately enjoyed it, but it mostly just got on my nerves. Best Track: Magic Act Rating: 4.5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 853: "Disco!" by MIKE
I always confuse this guy with Mike WiLL Made-It which is kinda unfair considering they have totally different sounds and this guy, err, sucks a lot less in my opinion. The inner contrarian in me wants to find the albums that the internet hipster nerds love and hate on them, but I can't hate on this. There's not too much in the way of direct stand-out tracks, but this thing has atmosphere DOWN. It's very similar to what I love about Earl Sweatshirt (no duh, they work together a lot) but this feels significantly more upbeat while still maintaining that hazy, lo-fi vibe to it. Not a single second feels wasted to me here, and all the songs sort of mesh together but in a good way instead of in a "why am I wasting my time here" kind of way. I can't wait for this long weekend. Best Track: Big Love or the closer Rating: 8/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 854: Exodus by DMX
Rest in peace to this guy, many hazy memories wander in my mind from partying on boats to partying in sketchy houses to raving to going to weddings, all where one of his big hits played. The impact he had on social events will never be forgotten. I'm not gonna talk about his past and future influence on hip-hop as a whole because I'm not qualified to talk about it. What I do know is that some of the best moments in my life, and in many people's lives, had one of his big hits playing in the background, and for that I doubt he'll ever be forgotten. Posthumous albums often feel like a cashgrab, a nihilistic attempt at capitalizing on increased relevance after an artist's untimely death. Does this feel like one? Well... No, I can't really say it feels like that, but there's this plaguing sense that DMX is a guest star on his own album, as many of the other rappers seem to take heavy precedence over him whenever they appear. The beats? They're a mixed bag. Lyrically? Not much to speak of, and you can often tell that his best days were past him. This album in general is fairly mediocre, but I have to say two good things: 1. When the beats hit, they hit, and there's some genuinely enjoyable stuff in here that feels like it's from a different era yet doesn't make me scream "boomer" 2. The ending two tracks are legitimately heavily emotionally affecting and I think a wonderful send off to his life and his career, and a touching tribute to his son. Overall though, this is just mid. Not great, but at least it doesn't feel like a cheap attempt at utilizing death for profit. Best Track: Hood Blues Rating: 5.5/10 |

Day 856: Fishmonger by Underscores (Album Choice: freedg)
I thought that the band and album names were swapped at first. I came into this completely blind, and enjoyed the first track but in a way where I thought "damn I can't tell if this is going to be annoying or enjoyably kooky." And it's both! I have to give a point for eclecticism here, as you really never know what's coming next on this album. Some of it is really, shockingly good, and then a lot of it is annoying. To this day, I still don't understand hyperpop or its appeal for the most part, even if I've liked a few albums I've heard by some artists in that movement like Dorian Electra (did I like that at first? I forget, but I like it now). Those are mostly the annoying parts. The rest jumps from sound, mood and genre to... I'm not finishing that sentence. Anyways, this is yet again mid to me because of how hit-or-miss it is, but I can at least say it's worth trying because it's truly something new. Also I avoided naming that one hyperpop band that I really hate. Best Track: the longest one Rating: 6.5/10 |

Day 858: Times by SG Lewis
I found this one because my friend was playing one of his songs on our way to rave and I really, really liked it so I decided to check it out. This one I'm going to have to relisten to a bunch, it reminds me a lot of my now old favorite Prom King but some of these tracks were pretty boring, while others captured some of that same weird nostalgic "god I want to go out and party to this" vibe that that aforementioned Skylar Spence project or, like, Jessie Ware captured. A real mixed bag for me. The show Corporate on Comedy Central shouldn't have been cancelled it describes how I feel every weekday. Best Track: All We Have Rating: 7/10 |

Day 859: Escapades by Gaspard Auge
I was on Spotify looking for old classics because I was feeling real low on the brain chemicals and wanted some nostalgia and upon a search I went "wait, what the fuck, there's a new Justice album this year? Why the fuck hadn't I heard?" And then I looked online and saw that no, this isn't a Justice album, this is the debut solo album of one half and as far as I can tell the other guy doesn't make any appearances whatsoever. That is certainly not the same so fuck you Spotify. You got me cautiously excited for nothing! I know only like 2 people read this shit so to whoever wants to mock my love of the French House duo, FUCK YOU I WILL NEVER STOP LOVING CROSS AND I'LL EVEN DEFEND WOMAN. I can't say I enjoyed that 2011 one at all though. Anyways, I really came into this with my expectations too high, but then I relowered my expectations in my head and... yeah this is still mostly sucky or mediocre. I have to say that at certain points it even sounds... cheesy? And it's not like Justice never sounded cheesy but here it's just kinda like, it sounds almost like production music, but in a lame way because I like quite a bit of ExtremeMusic.com music a lot more than this. There were some hits, but they were few and far between. Still though, this gives me hope I can see this guy live which will then beat Uffie for closest I've seen to Justice live. Probably won't be as good of a show though, maybe because I'll definitely be far more sober. I hope. Best Track: Belladone Rating: 4/10 |

Day 862: Dark In Here by The Mountain Goats
Y'all know that I have a deep personal affection for this band. The Sunset Tree I blasted a ton during senior year of high school because I was going through some personal legal bullshit, even though that album is about an abusive stepfather and not... whatever I was going through. And recently I've been playing Tallahassee WAY too often because of... obvious reasons that I shouldn't state. This album is just okay though. It's pleasant, the lyrics are what I'd expect of this band but there just isn't that passion, that desperation that is why I love the lo-fi years of this band so much, or the emotional relatability of the two albums I just listed before. This is just fine, pretty background music with poetry above it. Meh. Best Track: Lizard Suit for its chaotic free jazz ending Rating: 5.5/10 |

Day 864: Space and Time by Justine Skye
This artist was funnily enough one of the very first concerts I ever went to, because of something called "High School Nation Tour" that brought (at the time) a bunch of no-names to high schools across the nation... If the name of the program didn't make that obvious. Drake Bell performed at a bunch of those tours and at the time I was bummed that he didn't decide to come to my school but considering recent events... Yeahhhhhh haha I'm glad I didn't a picture with that dude. Anyways, the last thing I heard about this artist before finding out she released something this year is that she accused Sheck Wes of a bunch of abusive behavior, which is extremely easy to believe, and then nothing, and then Spotify randomly recommended this to me. Aaaand, it's okay. I remember when she performed I didn't like any of the people performing but she was definitely the best by far, and considering she was like 18 at the time (just a little bit more than 2 years older than me WOW) my memory says that she did a good job. This album is basically just pretty average pop R&B stuff all the way through, it's pleasant to listen to, no real clunkers, no real bangers. I've actively listened to this album 3 times now and each time has felt like passive listening, if that makes sense. I think I'm finally escaping the biggest source of my depression guys, check back here for updates! Best Track: In My Bag Rating: 6/10 |

Day 865: Roses by The Paper Kites (Album Choice: -Poison)
It's better than the last album I reviewed, and I found myself hypnotized by the depressingly dreamy aura they're clearly trying to go for at several points, but there were also several points where I was just kinda bored. I used to listen to this band and Isis and Neurosis a bunch in high school but never reviewed any of their albums bc... IDK I forgot to. And I haven't really listened to any of them in years. Are they all similar? I think I remember them being similar. Anyways, I usually do not trust RYM Metal recs but I actually really enjoyed this, all 71 minutes of it. Day 868: Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish
Y'know I've already been weirded out for a long while that there are musicians reaching their glory days that are younger than me, but now we've reached the point that they're younger than my little BROTHER?! Well, actually, considering this is her second album, this isn't a new phenomenon. Pretty sure she's not even the first artist to be born post-mid 2001 to gain a huge following amongst whatever music crowd, from the radio pop listeners to the fake RateYourMusic hipsters to the true "I primarily listen to traditional Kecak chants from Indonesia or field recordings of northern Greenland" hipsters. When she first came on the scene, I thought her music was garbage, but I've gotta be honest, the white club-loving girl in me thinks that Bad Guy is a total bop. And she was great when she featured on that Denzel Curry song... HOLY SHIT THAT WAS 2018?! Why am I getting old so fast? Why is coronavirus ruining my chance at living in the moment? Why did I get myself stuck in a toxic relationship for nearly a year? Why am I not applying any of the skills I learned in grad school at my current underpaying job? Actually, that last sentence was a lie, I didn't learn shit from grad school. Okay so anyways, I come in here acknowledging my previous bias, but also acknowledging that she's proven she can make a good bop for the dance floor, and she truly does have a pleasant singing voice when she's featuring on other people's tracks. This album? It's a total mixed bag and way too long. All the attempts at making similar club-friendly tracks here? For the most part, they fucking suck. THEY FUCKING SUCK. When things are quiet and more emotionally honest, it's a pleasant listen, though I don't think there was a single moment during this album I found to be truly amazing. The production is slick, but mostly unmemorable. I can imagine superfans will think this is the greatest album ever made, but me? I find it hard to have much of a strong opinion at all. Once again, like I've said in a million other reviews, this shit is okay, even good most of the time, but practically never great. And some of those attempts at making bangers really do suck out the ass. Anyways, I should hit the gym. And fix my insurance so I can get therapy. And start meditating. This is a collection of demos, some of which are seeing their first official release after floating around the internet for decades, but most of which have never been on the internet in the first place as far as I can tell. And they sound like demos. For some reason, I feel like if I was reviewing this maybe 6 or so months ago, I'd be calling it pretentious art school garbage or something. But with how utterly volatile my brain has become recently, I'm finding myself actually LOVING this stuff. The singer's voice is like eating ass to my ears (okay... that was terrible) and the spacy arrangements combined are enough to make this an enjoyable listen all the way through. I don't know if this having a track called Bull Of Heaven is meant to be a direct reference to the meme band or not. Day 878: DR. EV4L by Young Nudy (Album Choice: IRL friends, sorta)
I hate when I don't know how I'm supposed to capitalize things, and I hate the fact that this guy decided to use l33tspeak in his album title in 2021. A couple of my friends saw this guy live on Saturday and said it was absolutely amazing, but resale tickets were like $70 and I had someone offering me a no-strings-attached rebound that day instead. The problem was that she lived an hour drive away, so I had to have a friend pick me up from my house to drive me to her place, then I spent like 7 hours there, then I had to call a DIFFERENT friend to come pick me up, and then I linked with the two friends that saw this guy live, the guy driving me home and another friend and the 5 of us all smoked together. The emotionless sex was absolutely TERRIBLE, and I don't know whether the sex or the moments in-between were more depressing, but the guys who saw Young Nudy live said I probably made the more emotionally and financially healthy decision, because I REALLY needed to bang someone that wasn't my abusive ex. Anyways, this album. It's okay. Lyrically, this stuff is edgy as fuck, but I don't really care. The performances are a bit understated for what I'd expect for these kinda lyrics, but maybe that's a blessing in disguise. Apparently the concert had a very similar vibe to Playboi Carti's live performances, which makes sense because he also mumbles on record but screams live, and I can imagine that being a lot of fun. But this album? Meh. And the features add almost nothing. Therapy session 2 on Wednesday! Best Track: 2Face Rating: 5/10 |

Day 882: Donda by Kanye West
Oh yeah, you were ready for me to go deep and hard to this one, weren't ya hun? You were ready for daddy rayword to ejaculate his thoughts about this nearly 2-hour opus that's still incredibly religious and I'd probably say something about his dead mother too. You were ready to lap up all my verbal jizz about why this album sucks or is a masterwork and my reasoning for it too. You were ready for me to skullfuck your mind with mindblowing thoughts on what divorce did to this man's music. Well, I'm not giving you any of that (and also, you and I both know these reviews are either hilariously terrible or unfunnily terrible). Everyone else is giving you strong thoughts but I just think this was not very good. I still think Ye was his peak (ah, summer of 2018, how I miss thee). 108 minutes is ridiculous, and I listened to it TWICE, but it was still far less excruciating than Jesus Is King. Best Track: You're going to end up listening to this, or you can find a recommended peak cut from someone else. Rating: 5/10 |

Day 883: A Martyr's Reward by Ka
Good beats, good length of songs, good length of album, great wordplay in the lyrics, but for the most part the understated delivery fails to inspire great passion from me. Still, I recognize this album is very well-made and I did enjoy it. So that's that. Best Track: I Notice Rating: 7/10 |

Day 885: Hobo Johnson Alienates His Fanbase by Hobo Johnson
I was feeling particularly self-loathing today and wanted to torture myself. I succeeded. Best Track: Are you actually thinking of listening to this horseshit? Best Track: 1.5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 886: Sometimes I Might Be Introvert by Little Simz
I just wanted to beat the melon here. I can't be contrarian because this is definitely one of the best things I've heard this year, all 60something minutes of it. Best Track: Protect My Energy Rating: 8.5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 887: Certified Lover Boy by Drake (Album Choice: Multiple people IRL)
People like this guy. People suck. This album sucks. This guy is a pedophile. I can't believe I sat and listened through 90 minutes of pedophile music. Best Track: Papi's Home (god, even the song titles bother me) Rating: 1/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
wow u caved to peer pressure and listened to 90 minutes of pedo music. sad

Day 888: Squaring The Circle by Sneaker Pimps
Becoming X is still one of my favorite albums ever and still what I believe to be the best album to fuck to. Not gonna be updating that list for a while. This... Man it just ain't the same without Kelli Ali. It's not bad, it's just bland and mediocre. If 888 is a benchmark number then I will count this as comparing a band that made a 10/10 to... this. Best Track: Do You Care? Rating: 5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 889: By The Time I Get To Phoenix by Injury Reserve
People are going crazy over this one. I think their 2019 album was better. Do people just like this more because it's more experimental or something? It's got a lot that's technically impressive and creative, but the whole vibe is just less fun. Oh, one of the guys in the group died last year. That might explain the vibe change a bit. Best Track: Knees Rating: 7/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 890: No Sun by Nite Jewel
I came in here expecting something like Kelly Lee Owens but this sounds nothing like that, which is disappointing because I need more stuff in that vein to heal my brain, but I can't judge this album based on those merits. I can judge it on being only about half good, and for something so short I would expect more than half. Making my best of 2021 list is probably gonna be hard. Best Track: #14 Rating: 5.5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 891: Luminol by Midwife
This album is also very same-y... Yet I enjoyed just letting myself lay and wash in the reverb-y vibes the whole time, and not a single second felt wasted. Hooray that I like something. Best Track: 2020 Rating: 7.5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 892: Antiphonals by Sarah Davachi
My brain is sad and broken and this collection of loops hits my brain hard. When will life be enjoyable again? Best Track: Seriously, when? Rating: 8/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 893: Montero by Lil Nas X
Y'know, there's something that just feels so... contradictory about this entire release to me, and I can't put my finger on it but it honestly makes the whole thing MORE appealing somehow. Like in a way, this feels like Lil Nas X is trying to legitimize his place as an "artist" and put out something that can make him respected as more than just the meme guy who made the cowboy song with Billy Ray Cyrus and Nine Inch Nails that they refused to classify as country until a white guy was singing on it. At the same time, somehow the entire vibe of this is incredibly corporate-dressed, perfectly pressed pop rap made specifically to target a young 13-25 crowd that dude probably didn't have that much creative control over, engineered to a tee. You also get the feeling that all of these features (Elton John? Really?) are here just to make a quick buck and maintain relevance through name association, yet none of their performances stick out as particularly bad. Overall, two listens through and I enjoyed basically every second of this, and it might be irony-poisoning influencing me but shit, although Lil Nas X has more than a few corny bar I would totally go to a party right now where they played this album on loop. Best Track: Scoop Rating: 7.5/10 |

Day 894: If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power by Halsey
I don't need to write much right now and I shouldn't be because I'm packing at the moment for a move in 2 days. And you should be able to Google this shit on the off chance you've NEVER heard a Halsey song. I'ma say that past stuff from her wasn't really my forte, and this album is a bit... mid to me right now in that I really RESPECT the stylistic variation but the songs I like most are the bangers, especially when shit gets into borderline breakcore territory, while the ballads I'm just eh on. Don't care about lyrics this time, just pure energy, this I WILL revisit before 2022. Best Track: Girl Is A Gun Rating: 6/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 895: Sling by Clairo
I know a lot of dudes who are super horny for this singer. I am not. Whether I was or not, I'd like to believe it wouldn't change my opinion on this music, which is boring and doesn't inspire me to write more than one thought about it. Best Track: Meh Rating: 5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 896: All of These Rose Petals by Vatista
I literally found this by trying to see what the breakcore album from 2021 with the highest number of ratings on RYM was. And, of course, it had to be one with nightcore as a subgenre. Actually, that's not fair, there have been one-off nightcore or nightcore-adjacent things I've enjoyed, like, uh... My friends thought that Goreshit was nightcore so I think that counts? Either way, this is a brief project, 8 tracks, 22 minutes. The artist self-described this as Quote:
I need help... Best Track: I literally just told you, NONE Rating: 2.5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 897: The North Water by Tim Hecker
I didn't like this that much compared to almost everything else I've heard from him, but my opinions on him can be contrarian sometimes because I think that minimalist one after Virgins is better than Virgins. Best Track: A Breather Rating: 5.5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Day 898: Julius Eastman Vol. 1: Femenine by Julius Eastman and Wild Up (Album Choice: OnionBurger12)
Someone compared this to Steve Reich and I quite like some of his albums. I didn't like this, it went between boring and annoying me. It's definitely meant to be listened to as a singular piece, but eh whatever I'm just word vomiting here ugh corporate life sucks Best Track: yo mama Rating: 4.5/10 |
Re: Recommend me some 2021 albums halp
Way late cause it came out a couple months ago, but Colors II by Between the Buried and Me is pretty good.

Day 899: A Beginner's Mind by Sufjan Stevens & Angelo De Augustine
This dude released 6 albums this year and this is the only one that isn't supposed to suck. It doesn't suck, but it bores me. Best Track: No Rating: 5/10 |
