and the other can be for people who haven't unlocked the skill token yet.

If there were 2 divisions, there would be probably only 100-150 people in the "Have Vrofl".

And then there would be probably 700-800 who don't.

The skill gap would be immense in both divisions , how would that even work ? People who should be in D1 would be sorted with players capable of being in D6.

Why should a tournament be sorted because of one token? It really isn't a reliable way to make sure the tournament is run in the most fairest way for each player.

Also bracket style would be amazing, but seems a bit complicated if there are 800 people who entered. Unless it was narrowed down to top 64 or top 32. Would take a long time to finish it. Unless each match was only 1-2 days long to submit scores.

i don't think this is as big of a problem as you think it is
in pretty much any tournament with a completely open pool there are bound to be several times more "joes" than "pros"
and besides, d1 in last year's tournament had, what, 5 times more people than d6?

don't think of it in terms of divisions; the divisions were more or less decided arbitrarily over the past several tournaments
it is completely unfair for player A to have next to no chance of winning a prize due to being just above an arbitrarily decided cutoff when player B has a decent shot by being just below said cutoff
with one's tournament placement based ENTIRELY on one easily verifiable variable, it becomes clear that players A and B will both lose handily, just as they would in any other reasonably-organized tournament, because they both fall below the expected top skill level in the entire tournament (unless like, it's the d5-d6 cutoff and player B is somehow the only guy who would've been placed in d6 without having vrofl, in which case he'd have a very slight upper hand in winning the non-vrofl division)
as for the skill gap in the vrofl division, well, it would just go to show how stupid it is that last tourney, someone who couldn't pass ehhs could have won vrofl

look at any official tournament discussion and try to tell me, completely seriously, that everyone thinks the current division system is fair
look at all of the people complaining about how they were deemed good enough to be in d6/5/4/3 but just barely, immediately dooming them to a complete loss
look at all of the people who bitched about ca25nada (plus other guys in the lower divisions i don't know the names of) for being "too good" for their divisions

a permanent line in the sand needs to be drawn, and this is the first thing i came up with
if you want to make it more fair, well, just make it so that more people finish the tournament "in the money", add rookie prizes for new players, maybe throw in a spon con or two that anyone signed up for the tourney can enter, etc.
the obvious issues specifically with the vrofl requirement are:
1. movement between the two divisions. obviously we'd have to figure out how many people in the non-vrofl division "deserve" to get vrofl and get thrusted into the main division, and accordingly it would have to be determined whether or not people in the vrofl division should ever be moved back to the "main" division, and if so, using what criteria.
2. people who abuse the system. there are obviously going to be people who say "hey, i think i'm good enough to get 1bil points in a day, but i don't want to because i want to win the main division in the next tournament," and if there ARE criteria for moving people out of the vrofl division, there may be people who say "hey, i'm going to do intentionally badly in this tournament so i can win the main division in the next tournament". you may notice that both of these groups of people are retarded, but it's completely likely to happen. plus people could just make new accounts and not get 1bil on them.

besides the fact that there's an 80% chance that the initial suggestion was sarcastic, i'm gonna agree that trying to pull this off would be insane, plus bracket style is inherently unfair in that you only have to directly compete against a VERY small fraction of the pool in order to win (for a single elimination 800 person tournament you'd have to face at most 10 opponents), plus you could get ****ed by your initial match-ups, etc

I don't think it has a lot to do with the prizes. It's that moment when you realize once you're considered D6, you'll always be D6. I'm starting to plateau in skill D: I wanna be high D666666666. Besides, D5 was pulling off shit I still can't do last official lol But I've *grudgingly* accepted that I'm D6. I just like beating people.

it's not about vrofl itself, it's about having the thing unlocked
1bil in a day isn't exactly something a lot of people are able (or willing) to do, as shown by the low number of people who have done it (and even that number is inflated by people who got it by doing random shit), thus it's a pretty good indicator of both skill and TryHardIcity
