Default Why do you AAA?

I've always found the most pleasure in rhythm games when playing my favorite tracks, casually hitting notes and jamming along, but it seems the general consensus on this site is that going for AAAs is what you're supposed to do. That's super cool and I love watching replays of people smash songs, but what about it keeps you guys grinding for that perfect run? I swear, I perform worse when under the pressure of trying for a AAA. Makes me anxious and I stress every movement I make.

Many gamers are achievement-oriented. When first playing ffr, one realizes that passing songs is relatively simple due to how quickly health regenerates in-game. So passing a song is not so ambitious of an achievement. The next level of achievement would be attempting to get full combos (i.e. getting 0 misses on a song without failing). However, this is also relatively simple since one can simply "mash" a song (i.e. randomly presses keys quickly so as to not miss a note) since boos don't break your combo. Because of this, in terms of having a way to measure achievement, most people use a "perfect attack" (PA) based system where one score is considered better if you hit the song more accurately than another person.

If you are first starting, don't be too concerned about AAA'ing all the songs you can. However, you should try to give some effort into playing the song while hitting the notes as accurately as you can. If you can't get a AAA on a song quite yet, see how close to one you can get!

I think the better question is what answer are you thinking you're going to get because it's an extremely obvious one.

Usually when people play a game where score and ranking is displayed at the end of every session, they have incentive to improve.

This person is clearly new to the forums and thus is not familiar with all the intricacies of the game and the community. I'm sure we all asked what seemed to be "stupid" questions when we first started (especially if one is new to rhythm games in general).

nice answer rueben
and come on guys, give him some real answers!

I AAA'ed as much as i could back when i did because i wanted to see where i stood ranking wise. And additionally I don't like all the songs, so it was always nice to know I didn't have to play certain songs again after I AAA'ed them.

I'm interested in the opinions of players better than I. If I knew what to expect I wouldn't have asked. Everyone's got their own reasons for what they do. I'd love to hear yours if you're willing.

Yikes, didn't mean to sound rude, haha.

But yeah, pretty much what reuben said.

Having the mindset to go for that AAA however is a huge incentive because that's essentially the end point to a specific song or skill level you're trying to master.

Y'know, I never thought of it that way. I appreciate you taking the time to give such a through response!

I gotcha. That's a good way to look at it.

Well for me, I've actually fallen back into the realm of playing casually as my main source of enjoyment. After playing for scoring purposes for years, it becomes tiresome. I eventually found that a combination of creating arrow charts, playing casually, and interacting with the community was more rewarding in the long term. That burst of happiness from AAAing a song is a short-lived experience.

i have 0 public aaa's and i'm borderline d2-d3.

i know for sure i'm in the minority but i don't see the point in literally trying to hit every single arrow perfectly, it's way too much effort and luck, especially when i get random goods in easy (or hard) spots where i have no clue what i did wrong. i believe that in ffr a good is called a "good" for a reason, and that the way people tend to interpret ffr timing judgements suggests that perfect/good/average/miss should be renamed average/bad/terrible/cataclysmic. why ffr players are so self-deprecating is something i'll never understand.

i only really play this game to waste time and for enjoyment, and trying to hit every arrow within the three frame window certainly fulfills the first objective but not really the second.

Pretty much this. It's a game you can keep coming back to and improving to the point of AAA'ing the song you were once uncomfortable with and going for more improvement on more challenging files from there. The aaa aspect ends a goal to only create new goals.

When I get a AAA I achieved perfection and that's the ultimate satisfaction on ffr for me. Knowing that I have completely dominated the song and will never have to go back to it. If I'm playing a song too hard for me to AAA my mindset is to get as close as I can to AAA'ing it so the end goal is always perfection and improving. A feeling of accomplishment and progression.
