Musicians
I'm just wondering, how do you feel when someone who barely knows anything about your instrument praises you for playing well?

Re: Musicians
To me, it just means it sounds good to someone to an uneducated ear. So it means you play well for a basic audience, but not necessarily for an audience of musicians. I play the Tenor Saxophone if you're wondering

Re: Musicians
I personally play the piano, and sometimes when I play in the auditorium there are those types of people who come up to me and tell me that I played well just because the song was a lullaby.

Re: Musicians
as easy as you might think the song is...its still sounding good to someone, even though they might not be musically talented. I dont really see how you can grab a negative out of this, basically you play an instrument to entertain people and here you did what you set out to do.

Re: Musicians
I play the violin and work hard everyday to achieve a greater understanding for my instrument. If anyone appreciates my talent or compliments on how a peice of music sounds (regardless of my own criticism), I thank them for giving thier time to listen to me play. It doesn't matter if it's a simple peice or complex; someone took thier time to listen....that is probably the greatest compliment anyone can ever give you. For time is a precious thing to spend on anything.

Re: Musicians
I accept the compliment, but my expectations are way to high for myself. If I'm playing something easy and just sounds pretty, or a popular song, I feel ashamed that I'm being praised for it. In all honesty, I kinda dislike being praised for playing guitar. In my earlier years I was being praised for being the best guitar player in my school and it all got in my head. And to my expectations of myself, I suck really bad. I don't practice nearly as much as I should and now I have to rebuild my calluses.
But I love getting compliments for my music theory knowledge. :] |

Are you the kind of person that gets mad when somebody compliments you? Do you feel understood by the public only when you get criticized? I think you should simply accept the compliment, and, if you can, show them what you can really do afterwards. If not, be proud, that's it. |

Re: Musicians
I always like a compliment. I know how well I am personally which is good enough for me, and if someone else enjoyed what I am doing enough to mention it to me then I am happy to have entertained them. I play Alto Saxophone and Electric Bass Guitar, I don't hardcore practice on either or anything so to a musician I am nothing special but I am always glad to entertain people.

Re: Musicians
I always enjoy compliments, no matter who I get one from. If you entertained someone, be happy, and if you need to have whatever you play learned better for your next recital or whatever, then just know that and be content.
Vocal major, btw.(yes I say singing counts as an instrument)

Re: Musicians
100% agree....vocals are the most important and by far the most difficult aspect to master.

Re: Musicians
I tend to try to shrug off the compliment by telling the person something like, "Oh. It wasn't that great. I made [this] mistake at measure [x]. Blah blah blah." I should stop doing that though because I heard it's bad for one's self esteem to reject compliments. Btw, clarinet. ^_^

Re: Musicians
I find it better if your music is pleasing to the general populous rather then a select group of individuals. Maybe..

Re: Musicians
this doesnt just apply to music you know. i get praised all the time for my drawings which arent very good. i always feel like people are just trying to make me feel better by saying my drawings are good. id much rather people tell what i can do to improve instead of "omg you draw so amazingly O_O"

Re: Musicians
In general, we tend to be our own harshest critics.
If someone compliments you but then you turn around and start pointing out how you screwed up, that's actually being rude to the other person because you're essentially saying "Your compliment doesn't matter and your taste is so poor that you missed all these obvious mistakes of mine." If you do that often, you can guarantee that people are going to stop complimenting you. Feeling uneasy about neophytes praising you... that's something totally dripping with insecurity. Learning to play ANY instrument takes some degree of skill, and so if someone gives you a compliment for how you play, just take it at face value and tell them thanks. Not a huge deal if you didn't care for your own performance nearly as much. :P |

Re: Musicians
Why play in public if you don't want people to comment? I find most people are too shy to say anything 99% of the time when they want to say something nice, so if they are going out of their way whether they know about music or not, it's a really good pat on the back IMO.
