it's been brought to my attention that a lot of people seem to think FFR rank has any correlation with overall hand speed for music games

FFR rank only has a minor correlation with hand speed when you start getting to the highest tiers of the game; otherwise, it's mostly combo-consistency since that is how FFR is scored. if FFR rank = hand speed, songs that test your un-mashed hand speed would be worth more than any other song -- and they aren't

this allegation was brought up to me by Dinglesberry

FFR rank is a terrible indicator of finger speed. my rank was about 450 at the time of writing the guides, and jumped a bunch of places depending on how the ranks were calculated. but this doesn't matter, because rank is not calculated to determine hand speed, and I haven't played at least half of the songs in the game. I don't play FFR in general because I browse on a chromebook, which means my keyboard for playing is nonstandard, and when I do have a good keyboard -- aka on my desktop -- I'm going to want to play Stepmania, not FFR.

most of my scores are also index, not spread. this is an entirely different playstyle, and should cause you to drastically rethink my scores.

if you want a better indication of my hand speed you should check out something like this

my best speed, bare-handed, is about 1040.

my best theoretical bare-handed (i.e. achieved this speed with one hand but not both) is about 1080.

note that the world-record cap for bare hand speed is about -80 off from the sticks record, i.e. the world record for sticks is about 1220 and the world record for bare hands is about 1140. here are records for sticks:

that's covered by "when you start getting to the highest tiers of the game"

i.e. the differences within the top 50-100 will be due to hand speed, and there will be a correlation with hand speed, but what places someone in this rank will be only a fraction of total hand speed

the video you linked is actually a good example of this because it's measuring one kind of hand speed -- extensors, in particular, or trill speed to simplify.

hyeon would not be so fast at, say, bare-handing a drumometer pad, which is an extremely different kind of speed metric

right, but this is orthogonal to my point -- regardless of how ffr is scored, it's not going to select for all kinds of hand speed but rather very particular kinds of hand speed, and it's not going to directly measure that but rather correlate with it

I highly recommend it

regardless of how many people hate on the device, it is extremely useful for measuring hand speed progressions

it's expensive, so that probably explains some of the negativity, but I've not found a cheaper solution for measuring speed development accurately

AAA scoring sucks and I have bad accuracy and I'm bad at it but when I get to d7 FFR I'll never have to play it again
