Huh...that just sounds so crazy, but I'll take your word for it. I just hope that any BASIC components are non-critical (and mostly restricted to macro-esque functionality), because otherwise that's really dumb.

There's no way they would write any major OS components in Basic. Considering how they reuse a lot of code from previous OS's where basic didn't even exist it seems unlikely.

So does upgrading to Windows 7 clear up the lag that some users experienced while playing FFR under Vista?

I've got W7 all set up and good to go. So far I can't detect much difference between Vista 64 and W7 64 -- my benchmarks are only slightly better, but not by much.

Oh, and my W7 performance benchmarks.

Which sucks because the HDD's are the bottleneck due to the fact that they're not solid state (if they had 1 TB SSD's, I'd be all over that ****).

My processor is an i7 920 overclocked to 4.2 Ghz -- I'd get a 7.9 if I were hitting 4.2 with an i7 975, which has a faster QPI link speed than the i7 920. However, the 920 has a MUCH better performance to price ratio and chews through anything.

My hard drive is not a solid state -- magnetic drives are capped at 5.9, so that's good at least. Supposedly you hit higher marks by putting SSD's in raid0.

My 3dMark score improved by 200 or so points from Vista to Win7.

Next upgrade, I'm going all out.

If you switch the theme to the old win 98 theme then ffr doesn't lag on win7.

I think the main difference is that Win7 greatly outperforms Vista on crappier hardware...that's why it runs well on netbooks. Vista on a netbook would be a nightmare.

The problem I had with that though is the Windows maximized just leave a bunch of open space between the bar and the window. Also my school is giving me the legit version of W7 so I will try this out soons.

EDIT: This was fixed in the final release it seems. It's nice.

I'd say the marginal gains are primarily to the lower-end-hardware users. The gains for the higher-end hardware under Win7 are minimal at best.

If you are running Windows 7 with Aero on full blast and are able to play FFR and SM with zero lag, please raise your hand and describe your hardware setup and your software and BIOS settings.

Well now I'm using the full version of Windows 7 and I'm not getting these bull**** errors I got with the RC. Only problem I had was my fault because I was a retard and forgot to install my NVidea driver and was raging when I was running WoW at only 30FPS when I usually get over 100.

I think it's impressive that the drivers that come with windows 7 can run anything at 30 fps.

It's just WoW xD but yeah, these drivers are pretty good. Don't have to run up into my sisters room to get onto the router, just so I can get the WLAN driver on a 800x900 resolution on a 22" widescreen.

You should probably see if you can get any Windows 7 drivers for your hardware. Toshiba I Would assume has better hardware for these 3rd party drivers as they don't have any fruity hardware. The other drivers would still give you a better performance though.
