I have no set genres that I consider better than the others. And my choices are so differing that it would be very confusing to place one in front of the other. If I had to choose, then I'd have to say it's a cross between ambient, rock, psychedelic, classical, jazz, noise, trance, etc.

I think good music is when all of the different parts and all of the sounds manage to blend together into a perfect harmony. Everything just sounds pleasing to the ears, and you have a wonderful time listening to it. It's the kind of song that makes you go 'Wow... Now that is worth remembering". And while the song might not be pleasing to another person's musical palette, does that mean that another might not enjoy it? It's all subjective.

1b. How about bad music?

Dissonance isn't really my forte when it comes to music (which makes no sense, considering that I willingly listen to Merzbow). Which is why I never listen to the radio. Either something doesn't match up, something sounds really off, or something shouldn't be there. It feels too easy, too simple. And while I love simplicity, I don't enjoy dirt easy experiences. I want to take something for all it is worth and hopefully remember upon it for days to come.

2. Are you biased against some genres because of the fans they tend to attract?

Yes. Plain and simple. There are some genres I love, and some genres I despise.

3a. Do you make assumptions about fans of particular genres?

I tend to ignore stereotypes, as they add nothing to the musical experience. If they enjoy one thing, that doesn't make them a terrible person simply because I don't enjoy it. And if I think that, then who is the bad person here?

4. What role does a band/artist/genre's popularity play in your like or dislike for them/hir/it?

Again, popularity doesn't really bother me when it comes to the music, unless their "fame" is merely infamy. Do I like bands that tend to be popular? Yes. And while the musical industry is flawed beyond a doubt, it still takes a great deal of effort to get noticed, let alone famous/infamous. At least, I feel as though it does.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?

That depends. Do YOU think I have a good taste in music? It's all a matter of opinion. Notice how I haven't been namedropping any of my preferred bands (aside from Merzbow)? Because I know that if names were placed, then you, or others, would either void or warrant what I say because of the factors placed. If I take the factors out, then it's nothing more than an even playing field. Now, personally, I feel as though my taste in music isn't very experienced, so I cannot comment further upon it.

Depends on the mood; usually jazz hop is usually never a bad choice for me though. Orchestral (not limited to classical) is usually pretty nice too

I don't think that this is very easily defined because different people are attracted to different tastes/genres. A lot of people try to trash mainstream music, but it isn't always popular just because of social protocol (although it may or may not have a large part to do with it). I'll recommend shit to my friends all the time, and they won't always like what I pick out for them; the same goes for when they ask me to listen to things. So, to be as vague as possible, good music is defined as music you enjoy listening to. It doesn't matter why you enjoy it - it's catchy, or beautiful, or innovative, or humorous - the fact (opinion) of the matter is, you think liked it. And it will keep you coming for more.

1b. How about bad music?
Opposite of good music pretty much: things relative to the listener that they dislike. Just for me personally, I don't think my reactions to bad music have ever been as significant as reacting to a bad taste, or smell, or visual; maybe I just have a dulled sense of musical taste. But I'll call something bad if I think it's bad.

As a sidenote, there's a difference between hilariously good music and hilariously bad music. To make it a little clearer, I don't propose anyone listening to hilariously bad music by themselves to enjoy it; listening it to share with others is almost always the case.

[Edit] Mastering and mixing /sound quality can have a lot to do with how someone enjoys a track tbh. I mean I'm not talking like YOU GOTTA HAVE LOSSLESS BRO, but if you're hearing the clipping or noise from tracks that don't have them, it might affect your enjoyment

Highlighting "oh, well I knew this one preppy white dude who listened to underground hiphop all the time" is anecdotal and just makes it more emphasized that a genre carries a certain fan stigma. I really wish that these stereotypes didn't happen because it restricts taste.

I think that it used to for me, but I 'grew up' I guess. When I first got into stepmania, I had that hipster vibe where I basically just listened to "stepmania music" (sup Sharpnel, sup Benn, sup Dream Theater). But it's different now, and I'll take a liking to anything if it sounds good to me.

In the past, I might have avoided things my friends liked (~hipster~), but again, it's different now. As an observation though, this phenomenon is real and occurs pretty often (like what I mentioned about mainstream earlier).

I don't seem to read much into other people's opinions of music anymore. I've never expected everyone to have the same taste.

I don't know if anyone really matured the same way, but getting into the FFR/SM community really helped shape my sense of music. Sounds pretty nerdy right?

Before I joined, I couldn't care for music in the slightest. Music was always background noise to me, even as I was learning violin. I never really appreciated music until I starting playing FFR and SM. Looking back I don't regret googling "DDR simulator" that one day, huehue. Who knows how I would have ended up otherwise ??

Any music that describes who I generally am is seen as "good" music to me. Having more of a serene personality, I like to listen to classical music. Occasionally, there is also a "wild" side of me, so in some instances, I would prefer party/dance music haha. Being a very positive person, I don't entirely judge a particular genre as "bad" music. However, there are many songs out there that don't describe me well and that's what I consider "bad" for myself.

5. Do you think you have good taste in music?

This is essentially asking me if I admire the way I view myself, and of course I do. Therefore, I believe I have a good taste of music (certainly unique to say the least). I'm sure there are some people who disagree with my music selections and that's perfectly fine since I don't expect everyone to admire what I like to listen to.

6. How objective do you think you are when you judge music?

I think the beauty of music lies in how we all interpret different types of music. When one judges music, there is a considerable amount of subjectivity associated with our reviews. For objectivity, the closest factors are pitch relevancy, tone, and all of the other mechanics of music, but even so, there is a subjective factor behind all of that. Maybe this is based on what I believe, but this supports why I think anyone can sing.

Being an open minded person, I give any type of music a chance to have it try and express who I am. Many times it fails, but in some instances you learn new things about yourself. Regardless of how objective I am, there will always be a subjective factor.

EDM, my favorites being Happy Hardcore, Gabber, and Hardstyle, although I enjoy all of it. Otherwise, I prefer more Indie stuff.

Although I prefer underground music, mainstream music isn't necesarilly bad, its popularity can just be annoying. I basically think good music is music that shows lots of talent through its lyrics and use of instruments, whether they be physical or electronic.

I hate music that sounds like an immature 8 year old could have made. I realize you could say I'm one to talk for liking EDM, but there is a huge difference between a ***got like Deadmau5 and Daft Punk.

Oh yeah. Dubstep being a great example. I've listened to Dubstep since around 2007, and I thought it was cool. I don't dislike Dubstep now, but there are so many retards who keep screaming that Dubstep is the coolest thing ever, when really its just a fad that a bunch of people like because its "the cool thing."

Not exactly. I judge a person based on what they say and wear, not just what they listen to alone.

Screamo being for Scene/Emo kids, Dubstep being for hardcore ravers(lol), etc.

I don't think tastes in music are good or bad, I think they can be more or less eclectic. I'd say my taste in music is very eclectic.

If it gets my body moving, that's a good indicator that I like what I'm hearing.

Song-by-song, but I usually tend to download complete discographies at a time. I prefer to listen to complete albums.

I have never. my friends have always listened and played shitty music and i let them know how I feel about it. they usually like the songs that i show them, but they are extremely ignorant when it comes to finding new music to listen to on their own and are stuck listening to the same old bullshit...

With a grain of salt. Most people's taste in music is narrow and I don't expect them to like what I like.

last.fm has played a big role in my taste's development. since then I have been finding more artists through live performances. I've networked with people in bands all across the USA and get to see what bands they're playing with at shows. this is my favorite way of finding new music because there are some very talented local musicians you will never hear about because they never go on tour.

i started listening to classical music as a child, age 8 was classic rock, 4th/5th grade was radio rock (TOOL, Disturbed, SOAD, Metallica, etc.) middle school was when I was introduced to MF Doom and the other various rap genres as well as drum n bass, and in high school i began listening to ALL GENRES of punk and ambient.

I don't know why I don't like rap. I'm pretty sure it's because 80% of it has some of the stupidest fucking lyrics I've ever heard in my life. As for the other 20%, I like the lyrics and what they stand for, but I still can't listen to it. Country I dislike because I hate every Country singers voice. Pop is just bad in general, it doesn't need an explanation.

Not really. All I have to do is not act like them and I'm good.
