Default Re: FFR Community Pack Summer 2012 Released

on behalf of the woefully underappreciated BynaryFission, here's two more reviews...

SoC - this was actually really fun. love the jaunty piano rhythms and you brought out the accents well with your layering. complaints mostly deal with aesthetic stuff: the 16th freezes you used for the chunkier guitar could be expressed through some jack theory or shortened minifreezes, some of the longer freezes had way too many jumpjacks around them, which were very hard to hit often (and oftentimes not ver consistent...), and I'm not sure you had to use as many grace notes on the guitar as you did in the first half of the file. solo stuff all ruled.

Magewind - okay this was also quite fun but I'm shocked at how ridiculously hard some of these parts are. this is a super chill song, and even if there are instruments going haywire everywhere, following ALL of them makes the file feel super claustrophobic and way too intense. selective layering is really key here. it wasn't a problem in most parts, because the percussion/melody stuff either snapped into place or was separated, but you struggled a lot when everything came together--particularly in the ending, which had a flute (??) solo being followed with full freezes, with 16th streams cramped around it and even percussion stuff. had you chosen to follow any one or two of those elements, it would have worked out, but as is it's incomprehensible when playing.

patterns had problems in this regard, too, mostly with SUPERTRILLS, but that might just be me. don't take my complaints about difficulty too seriously, but remember that intermediate players like myself need charts to cater to our level as well.

otherwise, solid file and I can see you put a lot of effort into this.

okay...17 files left

Nightmare Night - I seriously don't get the backlash to this song. "ITS ABOUT PONIES GAY AS FUC LOOOLLOOL". it's a pretty legit song if you ignore the lyrics (which you can barely hear when playing anyway and mean nothing if you aren't versed with My Little Pony anyway). anyway, this is fun. 32nd patterns felt shoehorned in though (ie just filling in random spots between 16ths), maybe some flowy 16th jack theory might have helped with that.

16

Passage D ~Neus Remix~ - I don't call many drum'n'bass files majestic, but not all of them are created by wc. this is a boss file, maybe a bit freezy at times but the flow captures the song so well

15

Polar 240 - minifreeze use is kinda weird here. it works really well in some parts (like when you alternate btw the main melody and that recurring three-note xylophone melody in the chorus), but other parts are just confusing or inconsistent. choice of rhythms is good though, nice variation. ending's weird. I remember stepping this file a long time ago, but yours is definitely better. well done.

14

Sayonaramatane - Scylaax, you have this mad, hypercompressed way of stepping that just throws a bunch of insane motifs together. that means sometimes your files lose their sense of direction or feel disorganized, but when the song rises to meet your level, you have gold. I think that's the reason you do so well with t+pazolite songs: there's so much to work with that others struggle to bring out that you can perceive and express. this is a Scylaax file to the core: super-dense, varied, and oftentimes frustratingly messy, but it's perfect for this song.

13

Whore - yes, you do have to pee in a girl's mouth to make babies. this is basically Saddest RMX for people who thought that file wasn't dizzying enough, so if you like Saddest RMX, make of that what you will

12

Foxy Lady - very fun if simple. reminds of Sargon's best work--straightforward but with great texture.

11

Hatsune Something Something VOCALOID - played Heavy (because I know better than to play a 15 from leonid). really neat concept for scoring with the mixed 16ths and 12ths--this was quite a tough one to MA. simple but excellent throughout.

10

Divided By Three - I feel the same way about this as I did circa UEMP. good file but way too accurate with details to feel comfortable

9

JPEG Jive - noticed I skipped over the Kommisar files for the most part until now, apologies to Chris.

EDIT: boy that sure was a Kommisar file. really jaunty and varied, but structure is flawless and patterns express the song in creative ways (I like how you stepped that stuttering 16th note in the solo as a series of jumps w/ jack theory instead of just a dumb pattern like 44444444...way more fun and fitting). freezes, in typical Kommisar fashion, might be overlong in some parts, but the file still plays very crisply overall.

8 more to go! I will finish this pack if it's the death of me.

I just finished the last 8 files and now they're gone

**** **** **** **** ****

reviews part 1
reviews part 2
reviews part 3
reviews part 4
reviews part 5

y'know what I'm doing this again

Watashi We Mizuki Desu - well-stepped but feels kinda pointless, tbh. almost everyone will fail at the trills, and those who can do them already have other files to play. maybe an intermediate chart would have helped?

Vortex - hard but very fair file. I doubt I could even pass this lmao

Watch Out part 2 - starts off promising, but gets messy later on. needs more creative ideas to fully flesh out the effects in the song.

Weapon - yeah this rules. simple and brutally effective

The Island part 2 - this is well-stepped and has some fun ideas, but the file gets really repetitive really fast

Queen of Rose - excellent intermediate file. freezes are weird but work because you commit to them. kinda has old-school vibes to it...I think Ossa would be taken with this file.

Theory of Eternity

I listened to this song FOUR TIMES

light - potential for a nice intermediate chart here, but mines are too intense (I like the idea, but save it for a harder chart) and the long jack is a HUGE difficulty spike. decent otherwise.
medium - parts of this are very good, but others feel underdeveloped or plain weird (I think you misunderstood one of the synth rhythms?) minefield+note on piano is hella hard and inappropriate for such a subtle moment. all in all, headed in the right direction.
heavy - quit out at the 24ths. I don't understand this file, to be honest: there doesn't seem to be any consistent way of organizing or layering the various parts of this song.
challenge - see heavy. good ideas with mines but they make the file kinda hard to play at parts.

finished, whew. final thoughts in a post below.

Default Re: FFR Community Pack Summer 2012 Released

I honestly have to say that playing this pack gives me hope for Stepmania. That so many people would be willing to contribute to this is amazing and shows that our community is still alive and well. I've seen people who submitted files to this pack grow so much from last year (or even two years ago), and those who are new to the community are putting in just as much effort as everybody else.

a few special notes

LongGone - damn, you make really good files
danceguy117 - I'm glad you're back, dude.
Torrent - keep making hard files and maybe I can play them someday
Kommisar - you'll be in this community forever, won't you? thanks as always, original mentor~
Gundam-Dude - I WILL meet you in person some day, mark my words
wc - same goes for you
alexdest - and you. marvelous progress, brother
Yotipo - keep making files! the two you have here are very impressive (if not fully developed yet) and I think you bring a flavor to the stepping community that not many have dabbled in before.
Scylaax - stepmachine
Bynary - ilu
Yume+Lynn+Melon+leonid - 사랑하고 감사합니다
WTFBrandon - keep stepping Korean songs, mayne. Monster is hella fun
Baq12 - I'll always appreciate your files
icyworld - didn't actually submit but I just miss him <3
Xayphon - keep stepping songs with controversial titles
hi19hi19 - mad respect for you, dude
lurker - I hope your posts are being facetious but even if not, you'll always have a place here
Wineandbread - Heavy WAS fun!
Rog - dodgeball is fun, but please make charts that I can actually pass next time. thank you and much love.
bmah - always great to see you around.
ddr_f4n - you're always getting better and it's fun to watch. keep up the good work.
Zelda-YEH + mi40 - you two came out of nowhere, but fun files in any case. I wanna see some more
eastsideman09 - does this mean you're our designated xmod guy now?
LegendaryHawk - I didn't think you'd actually step legit stuff after Coward Killing Time, so this was a pleasant surprise. hope to see you around some more.
Detrimentalist - DODGEBALLIN
Kaneh - fun stuff as always
Ferrari - retreat back into your stepping cave, we have ~top secret~ planning to do
Raine - BONAMANA is your best file so far, keep it up dude
iRanch - I prefer Italian dressing myself, but good stuff. good stuff
Reshiram - you've refined your style quite a bit since I first saw your files. enjoying them a lot. look forward to seeing what you come up with next.
Valor - make more files
plopadop - nice cdtitle
Arntonach - did I spell that correctly? thanks for all the graphic stuff. I'm so glad we have artistic people in this community.
condoct - step sth other than vocaloid :P
megamon88 - step sth other than pony music :P :P
rparty89 - dj cat be scratchin' everything up in this house
Gameoson - Poseidon is fuuuunn
Draco Centauros - FOXY LADY

great work, everybody!

this pack gets a legit A+ from me

Hmm, interesting. I've never been one to apply jack theory much (likely due to my intense dislike for minijacks), I felt that freezes were a good way to bring out the guitar in a more unique way - SoC in general was stepped a bit differently from my usual style and that was a way I felt it would work.

As for the jumpjacks, those were primarily intended to bring out the multiple instruments at work in that specific section (hands would actually have worked but I thought that was overkill). My stepping style generally is to bring out the certain instruments and sections at work, which is why my jump usage isn't 100% uniform, especially in the solo sections.

Glad you liked the file in general.

I wouldn't say I stepped ALL the instruments - there are many sections where this isn't the case, in fact it's somewhat understepped in a few sections (not the harder parts, of course). To see what I mean, try playing the Edit chart sometime - that was the old 2009 chart that lingered in my folder for years prior to some clean-up work and revisions made to bring it up to standard for this pack. It's even more densely layered the Oni chart, to a fault actually. I removed a bunch of steps to certain sounds and instruments because of how much it broke the flow of the song at a few points.

The ending was a pan flute solo - the thing is, I didn't want to put it as plain freezes because I felt it was a waste to ignore the relatively even drum work going on. I was hoping to add a challenge factor to this song since many parts (especially that sax) really had some incredible stepping potential - but I see your point though, and in hindsight a really easy chart would have been a nice addition.

Nice commentary, it's definitely a contrasting take to my own opposing opinion on it, but I appreciate the comments regardless! Glad you enjoyed it, and yeah I almost killed myself stepping this way back in the day haha. It's pretty disappointing that none of my files made your top 20 but I'm glad you liked them regardless!
