Default [8bit Progressive Metal] Patashu - Fading World v1.1

http://soundcloud.com/patashu/8bit-progressive-metal-fading-world

UPDATED to v1.1 on 30th October 2012. Made everything from the middle to the end nicer sounding with thanks to www.famitracker.com forum goers Fezuker and robro!

http://compo.thasauce.net/rounds/view/OHC211 (adapted from my one hour compo entry)

An intro theme to a non-existent game - violent war erupts again and again, with no humanity and no end in sight. When your country is dragged into the conflict, you have no choice but to hijack a mech and see this to an end yourself - with nothung but hot blooded determination and righteousness blowing in your sails.

Yeah, this is true now that I think about it. At the first instant of conception I don't have a theme for the track - but without intending to I soon come up with an accompanying theme/story/location/whatever for the song and that gives me an idea of what it should be doing.

I think what you can do to make this and future tracks sound better is understanding how to produce a well thought out mix. Right now everything feels very mono, or if not, static. A nice trick is using midi delays that can pan hard left and hard right which are great for lead synths. Also, I would consider figuring out how to bring out the melody. This is even more important for this kind of music because the sounds are similar. It's important to let the listener know what to latch on to, and will engage him/her that much more to the track.
I would love to use stereo panning, but Famitracker doesn't have this because the NES didn't either XD But I would be all over it in a different program, yes. (Another thing I could do is export stems, pan them in e.g. Audacity, then render that as the final track.) One trick I was taught is to detune channels by a quanta, and so if they ever play the same note they don't interfere destructively, and that helps a lot. You also want some highs, some lows, some mids and to keep them saturated (so I have notes with long tails, noise instruments that fade rather than go quiet immediately, double and single channel reverb when I can fit it in, etc).

What else can be done to 'bring out the melody'? Make everything else quieter when it's playing? Make it a different part of the frequency range than everything else?

I really enjoy listening to your older tracks and watching how you grow as a musician- keep it up guy, it sounds awesome!
