Stepping for FFR
edit: just finished my first file for FFR, so if anybody would like to playtest, PM me and I will send a link over.
I'm planning to finally start stepping files for FFR, but I have no idea how much of my experience with Stepmania will cross over. So for those of who who have stepped for both games, are the processes noticeably different? Any advice you'd like to give me? Last edited by moches; 11-19-2012 at 08:35 AM.. |

Get used to not using freezes for :expressivemanias:
Short of that nothing is really all that different. Can't wait to see some moches ffr files. |

Re: Stepping for FFR
When it comes to stepping, it isn't too much different, other than the fact that you can't use freezes, and bpm gimmicks are relatively useless (except for changing arrow colors). Everything else applies.
I think the bigger differences between FFR and SM apply to the gameplay, as opposed to how one should step. Just be aware that you need to step songs in which we have permission for; either artists whom we've asked, or CC music (public music free for use). Last edited by bmah; 11-16-2012 at 11:45 PM.. |

Re: Stepping for FFR
I find that my files really lose the oopmh factor when I convert SM files into FFR—they just don't play nearly as well as they do on SM, which really demotivates me from doing more files for FFR or even making FFR exclusives. Likewise, I don't have nearly as much enjoyment with making FFR files as I do with SM, personally.
also be weary of jack patterns that may cause boos and rainbow grace notes that have to be hit as jumps/hands on FFR due to the timing windows and note registration

Re: Stepping for FFR
There's practically no difference, other than the audience. Instead of thinking "I want everyone to try to AAA this file" you should think more of "I want everybody to enjoy playing this file".

Re: Stepping for FFR
On a note to this, be aware of color theory use on FFR. Conversion can make that 192nd note split away and become a gallop instead of, say, a jump. This IS fixable, but not all files get a framer treatment.

Re: Stepping for FFR
I say just step like you normally would (minus freezes and bombs), you should be fine since you're really good

Re: Stepping for FFR
I would argue it really depends on the judges you get if it makes it in or not
good luck with that |

Re: Stepping for FFR
FFR receives its files in batches, which open on certain dates and typically close after we receive a certain number of submissions. The last one was open in late October. Batches open approximately once every 1.5-3 months (typically around 2 months).
You definitely should subscribe to the Queue/Batch Discussion Thread so you can get an idea of the next batch opening date. I'm not sure if there will be another one this year, but keep your eyes peeled. Also take note of submission rules on that thread. Typically between this waiting period is when people step a whole lot of songs in reserve for the next opening date. |

Re: Stepping for FFR
Bmah mentionned the submission rules, but if you ever find that too boring you should definitely play the song aptly named Submission Rules.

Simply: - You can submit up to two files starting out. - You start off with +0 points - If your files get accepted, you get points added to your cap. For increasing your submission cap - the ranks go as follows: 0-9pts - 2 10-15pts - 3 16-39pts - 4 40pts or more - 5 So here is how to increase your submission cap: - If you have a file accepted into the game -> +10 (So for example, you could then submit 3 files) - If you get the Acceptance Line (aka average score cutoff) +1.5 or more average point in a file -> +3 (Example: Cutoff is a 7.0 and you get a 8.5 on your file - you get +3 more points) - If you get the Acceptance Line + 0.5 or more average point in a file -> +2 (Example: Cutoff is 7.0 and you get a 7.5) - Getting Acceptance Line in a file -> +1 (Example: Cutoff is 7.0 - and you get a 7.0) Getting rejected: If your file dosen't reach the cutoff - and is scored below it then you will not get any points. For the next batch, you will still be able to submit no more then two. If your file makes the re-submission list (AKA top 10 files that were right below the cutoff) then you can re-submit with fixes while also submitting your two other files. Side-note: It is possible to get negative points, but in order to do so you need to send in a file so bad, its obvious your trolling. Or, you somehow steal someone else's file. That type of stuff. EDIT: Send me the file - I would love to play it. I'm not the best at judging files - let alone making files but I can give any input I can. I need to get better as well :P
