Re: Hand Speed & FFR Rank (STEPMANIA LIBEL)
I've been meaning to try those jar hold exercises out for a while but I always forget my man maybe I'll come out of retirement and become the GOAT I dreamed of being

Re: Hand Speed & FFR Rank (STEPMANIA LIBEL)
I'm actually finding that the jar holds, while good, are not optimal because it's difficult to get a full range of motion and your stronger fingers like index/thumb end up compensating for your weaker fingers. But I'll get to that in a second because it's a lot easier to understand what's going on by seeing how the muscles are used.
There's a fascinating video that shows each finger muscle being activated individually. You can see how these muscles extend down the arm. https://www.facebook.com/Da7eee7/vid...7675610957995/ These muscles are used for curling your finger toward you. This curling motion is called "flexion" and the muscles are called "flexors". There's a parallel set of muscles on the opposite side of the arm displayed in that video; those are the same muscles worked in the jar holds I mentioned and they're used for extending the fingers out. This motion is called "extension" and the muscles are called "extensors". You can see this outlined here: I rarely train my finger extensors, but I train my extensors used for drumming motions a lot. As such my speed for things like index and bare-hand drumming is objectively extremely fast, but -- as you can tell from my FFR scores -- playing Stepmania on spread is something I rarely do. I'm trying to work on that though. I've been meaning to do a part 4 for this exercise, but never got around to it. I've been able to create a better exercise for extensors by buying a 2.5lb weight from Walmart, and then tying it to the fingers I want to use and raising those up. your arm is held flat horizontally while you do the exercise. it looks like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUZsyaGrfEs and of course, when all else fails you can just trill until your fingers give out and you've got a burn going, but depending on how advanced you are that could take forever. I've been recomping/cutting for the better part of three months and haven't had much opportunity to make progress at things that involve muscle development, but I'll be doing that again this summer so we'll see how it goes |

Re: Hand Speed & FFR Rank (STEPMANIA LIBEL)
Does anyone just play the game(s) anymore instead of having to go through lengthy non-playing ways to get better instead of just playing.
I don't understand anything anymore Dingles help me. Last edited by MSB Khelly; 03-5-2017 at 09:33 PM.. Reason: UC Berkeley should be stripped of federal funding. |

"lengthy" is the operative word here when you reach a certain point of development it becomes extremely difficult to get sufficient muscular tension to develop the muscles and make them faster. I have to spend 15 minutes -just- drumming with bare hands if I want to get enough muscular use to increase barehanded drum speed an analogy can be made here with bench pressing. you can bench press 200lb from just doing pushups all the time. however benching 300lb is far more difficult. |

Re: Hand Speed & FFR Rank (STEPMANIA LIBEL)
Yes, but my point is why go to extracurricular lengths in order to try to achieve this for the 4k game (I'm not distinguishing ffr from sm), instead of just playing things that would develop you more in the game?

plus you don't have to limit improvement to 4k, you can train the whole hand. -plus- there are other benefits from improving extensor strength like increasing the ease of chores around the house |
