F/18 crashes into apartment building
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/j...7#.T4AB4dXa9Qg
The Navy's in a tizzy over this, although it was probably some idiot forgetting a tool in the engine again. Still irks me that the pilots are getting a lot of "They did what they could," and "They did their best," when millions of tax dollars flew into a building. Oh, and the whole "no one died" thing sounds fishy too. It wasn't loud enough to wake the neighbors at least. |

Re: F/18 crashes into apartment building
People need to learn how to fly their planes. Everything does sound fishy, though; for the plane to take off and for there to be a catastrophic engine failure is, to me, kind of not an excuse. I mean, did nobody, didn't any maintenance people actually go over the plane before it launched? Either way, yes, things do sound fishy, because it seems so weird for a plane to suffer such a condition and it essentially go unnoticed, especially after takeoff.
Well, as long as it wasn't a terrorist. |

Re: F/18 crashes into apartment building
Military planes are stressed to the limit regularly, so catastrophic failure is much much much more likely to occur than on, say, a 737.
Also, the pilots stayed in the plane until the last possible second to avoid crashing into a school and so they could dump all the jet fuel. One pilot ejected so low that his seat never dropped off. They found him in shock and still strapped into his seat in a building. So yes, they literally did everything they could. edit: btw, the apartment complex had a bunch of elderly and infirm that they haven't found yet I think. Mayor Sessoms at scene: "So far there have been no fatalities. I don't expect that to be the case by the end."

I mean I'm sure I could find dozens of parts not working properly on your car right now, but cars are overbuilt as **** because of that. Because of weight restrictions, airplanes (especially military jets) can't be that overbuilt, so it's a much more dicey situation. Air travel is the safest form of travel for a reason- it's impressive this kind of thing doesn't happen more often. Imagine if every single car crash made this kind of headline news... yeah. tl;dr people complain way too much about airplane maintenance and air safety when it's actually the most tightly regulated and safest form of transportation. Shit happens all the time, it actually happens to airplanes very infrequently compared to other modes of transportation. People just flip out about it more, for whatever reason. Yep basically this. I greatly admire the balls on that pilot to stay in as long as he did.

Re: F/18 crashes into apartment building
It was most likely an internal Engine Problem. Super Hornets sometimes have these sorts of problems although very rarely. They are supposed to go routine checks before takeoff, and something probably cracked. Why else would they crash into an apartment building? Not enough reason for it to be a conspiracy.

I can't imagine all the work that goes into keeping a top-grade military jet in pristine order, I have huge respect for Air Force and Navy pilots and aircrew. Flying is fun as hell but real complicated at times haha

Re: F/18 crashes into apartment building
This is the kind of stuff that makes me wonder if our society is ready for flying cars.
