Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
I don't mean for this to be another ad-complaint thread. However, a certain animated advertisement running above the actual game recently caused my computer to come to a dead stop (it is the "NEW HEROES" ad from Grandchase.net). I had to use Ctrl+Alt+Del to close Internet Explorer. Doing so caused an illegal operation that shut all the icons on my desktop down. I had to use Ctrl+Alt+Del just to restart the computer; I couldn't even access the Start menu.
I know that becoming a subscriber eliminates ads. I was under the impression that was more of an optional thing to do, for comfort. But at this point, between battling lag and computer freezes, I am going to have to subscribe simply to be able to play the game. If anything can be done about this, I would appreciate it very much. Perhaps move those ads elsewhere, and put different ads there? I can always find something else to do, but I do like to play the game. EDIT: I like how I misspelled computer.

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
Yeah some of the animated ads cause random lag spikes. Especially that stupid "Vance Vance Revolution" ad.

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
If you're a suscriber, doesn't that eliminate all ads on the site?
Doesn't that make it fine to keep the site running? Now I'm confused. Loophole!(i think)

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
i had the same problem. im running a Q6600 @ 3.0 ghz and 2 gb of RAM. I then realized my graphics card was crap and got a new one. since then no lag at all.
No clue what type of card you have Villiex but perhaps that could help.

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
@inflames07: Yes, that ad is the major cause of lag. I can't get out of something like Trip to the Moon without a Good when that ad comes up.
@Frozen Beat: I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. @leo172519: I have an Intel 82195, or something along those lines. It's not a great graphics card by any means, but it has always been more than enough to run FFR even on high quality. |

If there is an ad causing lag spikes or is otherwise particularly invasive I'm sure they'd want to know.

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
Subscriber or no, I don't think ads should show up on the game page at all, because I'm sure all ads makes the game a little less smoother than it should (even if it's unnoticeable).
I could be wrong, but taking off ads on that one page probably won't affect how much money FFR takes in from them.

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
Just saw this thread and I know there have been a couple others along the same lines. To me this is just unacceptable and if it gives you problems during game play, that pains me. There are a few options for me to get around this. If you can think of others, let me know.
1) get rid of ads and go broke trying to develop. (bad idea!) 2) ignore the general public and tell everyone it doesn't happen if they are subscribers (not smart!) 3) Remove all ads around the game and instead replace it with a video pre-roll ad that lasts 5-15 seconds before the game starts and then goes away afterwards? (possibility?) 4) have a game page that has a few ads and links to the real game with no ads on it. You would always have to go through this ad page first 5) leave it the way it is (probably not a good idea) Those are right off the top of my head. What do you guys think about the video ads? Good idea? bad idea? I hate the fact that the current ads are taking away from the gameplay experience. Cheers, Synthlight |

4 is a good enough choice.

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
What about like the widgets, theres that ad right before it.. do that with the game for non subs, maybe have a random ad appear while the game loads?

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
EnR, that is pretty much what those new pre-rolls are that we are serving up in the profiles. The only problem is that the widget ads don't pay enough to feed a pygmy dwarf. The pre-rolls are typically shorter and also go away when finished. I just need to know if you guys agree. I think it's a hell of alot better than flash ads running on the game page.
We could always try it for a day. And yeah, subbies wouldn't see them at all. Cheers, Synthlight |

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
Good point. With all the times FFR game page is opened up, I'm sure that is one of the primary sources of income. I've never had a problem with the text adds on the side of the page until the animated banners started appearing. I personally wouldn't mind option 3 or 4 though.

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
I'm leaning towards #4. #3 could work, but it seems like it'd be really annoying after a while.

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
Synthlight, thanks a lot for addressing this. I certainly do know the value of advertisements placed on a page visited as often as the game itself. Choices 3 and 4 would both be fine by me personally. I like choice 4 more myself, but wouldn't hate if either one was put into effect. Like DayMan said, 3 may eventually tend to get on my nerves (but not as much as my "coputer" being crippled, of course).

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
The text ads used to do really well until that company turned the world upside down with some changes. I won't mention the company name but I think they did their publishers and advertisers both harm with the changes they made. As a result we find ourselves serving crappy ads on the game page.
And those ads have to go. I just wish there was an easy way to make everyone happy with this. Cheers, Synthlight |

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
synth I like idea # 4, because, if I understand you correctly, then you could just click a "skip this ad button" at the upper right corner or something, like I've seen on multiple sites, and I just click the skip button before the ad even fully loads so it's not ever a problem for me

Re: Coputer-Fatal Animated Ads
I actually made a video a couple days ago about this ad, ironically enough. That's the only add that really causes me any problems.
The video shows how slow the engine runs when it's on the top screen, and as I try to open FFR, it takes about 15 seconds longer than it should. I also click on Dance and you can see how slow the rows come down. Then, I try to click the genre wheel and it barely moves. I'll upload the video to YouTube and edit with the link in a bit. |
