You can try old compiled binaries from the old repo, though i wouldnt recommend that:

I'm kind of wondering why this build of Stepmania even comes with songs at all. 3.9 and 3.95 didn't come with songs and we all had to find stuff ourselves back then. The included songs also double the size of the installer.

I'm gonna miss the old scoring system with the letter grades when it gets removed since I can't compare to how I did back then.

Whenever someone bothers to compile a release and put it on the new github repo, which has no releases.

It's not "Just compile and make a release". Before we make a release we have to make sure we have what we want in it, and that it is stable. There's isn't a lack of releases because we are "too lazy to make a release", but simply because there are new features which require a lot of testing to ensure nothing blows up.

Ex. It'd be really bad if we made a release and it ends up randomly wiping profiles, which most people probably don't back up.

Also before you or anyone else mentions that we could make an "experimental/beta" release, it's been shown on this project and many others that nobody reads the release title or release notes. They then continue to complain about issues which were clearly stated in the release notes. So no, it won't happen.

this build is geared towards a particular style of play and it's a huge benefit to new players to have some examples of what that entails
3.9 and 3.95 were super user unfriendly and 5.0 only made extremely superficial changes to improve that (including some built in songs) before the devs started breaking it just so they could say they were doing something big

it's not difficult to learn what percentages correspond to the old letter grades, plus the scoring system in 3.9(5) gives you so little information about how you actually did that it isn't worth worrying about

I'll be waiting eagerly for the next stable release then. Etterna has so many neat features built in that I'm using it over Stepmania 5. The bundled noteskins aren't really my thing because the receptors don't flash when you hit a note but I have other options.

I wonder what hurdles thememakers have to jump in order to make themes work on Etterna.

The "old scoring/grading system" isn't lost. A theme has access to the judgements and can calculate DP very easily(I think many vanilla SM5 themes did this).
Regarding themes, I think most/all SM5 themes should work on Etterna almost without any changes(Of course, they wouldn't use the new features).

Theres any way to do Artist or simefile authors search like "classic" way ? I swear i have tried everything, i just cant do it with the commands etterna uses

What do you mean? Is it the search system that had a next/prev button and moved you from one song to the other? If so, I believe it can still be implemented(Probably the same way), it's just not in the default theme (Til Death).
Why would you want that though, if you dont mind me asking.

I think he means changing the order in which you can browse simfiles you have like in alphabetical order and stuff. I triggered it once in Etterna but I have no idea how to do it again.

Heyo~ Never used CMake and I get:

CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:3 (project):
Failed to run MSBuild command:

MSBuild.exe

to get the value of VCTargetsPath:


when trying to generate with the GUI.

Any help would be appreciated~

General checklist: Run CMake as admin, and have Visual Studio installed (or else MSBuild doesn't exist).

Otherwise this is unfortunately a rather non-specific error.

Well I guess no Stepmania for me then.

Here's what I did, correct me if I did something totally wrong:

1. Download zip from git repo
2. Extract to where I want it
3. Run CMake as admin
4. Specify the extracted folder path for source
5. Specify the Build folder inside for binaries
6. Hit Generate
7. Error

Windows 10, got VS14.0 Pro, and MSBuild.exe is in there too.

Do I have to actually clone the project (if that makes any difference) ?

Cloning is different as it will download dependencies. Also do the following things.

1. Ensure C++ is checked in the visual studio installer, it is not by default with 2015 and newer.
2. If you are using cmake gui, click configure until errors go away (should be twice).
3. Cmake is set to create a build for the 32bit (x86) toolset.
4. Ensure Microsoft DirectX SDK (June 2010) is installed.

With that, it should be good.

needs a compiled installer for each major release, this cmake shit has kinda turned a lot of mates away from trying it out
