I thought this was a joke at first... Final Fantasy XIII-3?!

I Googled it and pretty much shat myself.

Why on earth...? This is exactly why I pretty much stopped caring about Final Fantasy after FFX (although FFXII has some high points worth mentioning). They've lost their magic and feel like cash-grabs, now. It's been like over an effin decade, mang.

Uh that could be because the original creator isn't WITH Final Fantasy. He's moved on. If you want a good game, go get the Last Story. Both the Creator, and Nobuo Uematsu (famous for his work on the soundtracks from FF1-10.) have left FF for their not-so-new company Mistwalker.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mistwalker

Anyway, needless to say, FF12 was the last true FF Game, and even then I don't think the creator was with that project the whole time. They should let Final Fantasy die already. It's sad seeing a good franchise go down like this.

The last FF game I really enjoyed was FFX. XI looked fun but I've not had a PC capable of playing it (nor do I want to spend forever playing MMOs), and I really couldn't get into XII. And well, XIII was... ugh. People keep telling me to play XIII-2 as it's apparently completely different and a whole lot better, but after trying XIII, I'm refusing to try anything else with it's name on.

I'm one of the series biggest fans and while I thought 13-2 was actually a solid game and quite enjoyable (I wouldn't judge it too much until having at least tried it), it wasn't one of my favorites in the series and they should really move on. =/

6 and 12 are probably my favorites. Damnit, where's my 6-2 :P

13-2 was certainly better than the first one, which was a linear borefest... but I still couldn't get into it.

Of course, I'm hugely biased because I tend to like games that throw back to nostalgic tendencies (FF6 and FF7 > FF9 > FFX > * )

well, 13-2's cut off ending made it pretty obvious that there's going to be a 13-3 or any other Final Fantasy game connected to the ending

I'd hate to see them end the series.

I think they just need to go back to the basics of what made many of the previous games great, and for gods sake stop making MMOs.

This is just ridiculous. Final Fantasy games that are made well (such as VI and VII) shouldn't need one sequel, let alone two.

IMO it's pretty much dead on its feet. The guys currently at the helm have heard plenty of people cry out for a return to the basics, but they don't seem particularly receptive. Nowadays they just seem to move with wherever the market's going -- hence the MMO's, etc.

At least for me, when a company decides to start pumping out MMO's, they've crossed over to the dark side. I remember sitting at a PAX East panel with Tass last May where some MMO leaders got together, and it's honestly pretty funny how transparent they are about the whole thing. "We want to actually give people a fun game instead of just taking people's money," etc.

They know damn well their games suck, but people play them anyway because they're profitable Skinner boxes. Unfortunately, the sort of hollow game design that goes into the MMO seems to spread throughout everything else, and now the FF franchise feels lifeless and bland.

I know I'm delving into fanboyrantmode with this post, but it's one of the reasons I've gotten jaded with the state of gaming. A lot of awesome franchises have failed to produce anything truly awesome in recent years. Personally, my preferences are pretty much lodged back in the 90's and early 2000's. Then again, it might just be childhood nostalgia overriding reason. :P

MMO's are incredibly expensive to make and continuously break new studios who receive backing from investors simply because the investors have seen how profitable the MMO business can be.

Due to the ridiculous costs involved, none of the parties involved want to take any risks, so they just blatantly rip off whatever is the most popular because, hey, that's already proven itself to work, right? It's the same approach you see many studios taking with new shooters nowadays, and it's happening there for the exact same reasons. That's why you get so many shitty MMO's and so many retarded WoW clones.

I definitely sympathize with this. The more money the business generates, the more streamlined and hollow everything seem to get. It's grating.

This was actually what I disliked the most about FFXIII -- it was just so darn linear. Too much linearity/nonlinearity can be boring, no matter what the story is. I like the feeling of being in control, and yet still maintaining some sense of general direction. It's a delicate balance that has unfortunately taken a hard shock in recent years.

You see this in the Flash gaming market, too. Flash MMO's are pricey to make because they usually require stellar artists, skilled developers, and lots of servers -- plus constant upkeep/maintenance/production. The resulting games are extremely profitable but they're all just carbon copies of each other.

I think what irritates me the most is how the distribution has shifted. Back in the 90's, we had "gamers." Nowadays, the market has opened up so wide that now it's no longer dictated by "gamers," but by people-who-play-games. The casual market has taken off -- which leads to games that are linear, easy, short, and braindead. The FPS genre has especially suffered for this.

For a long time I've wanted to make my own RPG that recaptures the essence of everything I liked about 90's (and early 2000's) gaming. Something made purely for the sake of fun without giving a crap about whether or not it'd be profitable (although I think it would be anyway). Tough without a team, though.
