Default Blast Corps; who has played it?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Nkjekg87mc

I just felt like posting this because I had a nostalgic flashback. I'm asking that, for all of you old N64 owners, have you played Blast Corps? I don't exactly remember the whole storyline, but it's basically like this; there's a nuke on wheels, it's leaking, whatever it touches will cause a nuclear winter, and you have to destroy buildings and stuff to clear a path for it. Alongside the main missions were side missions, which mainly involved destroying stuff, and racing laps, in a certain amount of time.

Not to mention that you eventually get to go to the moon.

Well, has anyone played this game? The video provided should provide a good sample for it.

PS: I swear I will love someone to death if they decide to make an LP of this game in the gbin. =P

i've gotten all gold medals on this game. it's one of my favorite N64 games of all time. alas, never got all platinums... because some of the plat reqs were just insane, and i wasn't THAT good with every vehicle...

but, yea. amazing concept of a game. completely original. and tons and tons of replay value to it. almost impossible to run out of goals in the game, because of the plat reqs are so hard.

i'm always willing to talk N64 with people, as i have about 100 N64 games and 2 N64 consoles still. it's by far my favorite system. The PS2 and 360 get no love compared to the N64.

my 15 year old cousin was asking me if i was getting any new games for my 360, because he was bored with CoD4 and Halo3 and his mother wouldn't let him buy anything new... and i said, "why don't you come over and i'll show you some great classic n64 games." and he laughed at me.

****ing kids these days.

edit: yea, diamond sands was one of those gold medals that took me forever to get. the dumpster is SO HARD to use.

Its sad how kids don't understand just how good some of the older games are.

Also, I never really got to play this whole game. I know that one of my friends had it, and I saw him play it a few times. I tried it, but never really played it.

Oh man, I'm trippin' on nostalgia over here. I remember playing Blast Corps when it came out, and even THEN nobody seemed to know what it was. Good times... good times...

I love my N64. **** the kids.

I never owned Blast Corps but I can remember renting it repeatedly when I was still able to get my hands on 64 rentals, was an awesome game. I never played it as in depth as Tass seems to have, but it's definitely on a short list of games I'd buy from e-bay for the n64

I loved this game. In some missions that would allow you to drive a car I would jump in the car and drive around until I failed the mission just for the fun of it.

Now I want to find my N64 and this game again just so I can run through it again. I don't even remember if I beat the game or not.

Oh man, blast corps...

"Hey, looks like you beat all the missions. Now save this rocket ship. And when you've done that you can go through space destroying ****. And then when you get back you can try golding every mission. And then when you do that we'll add platinum times."

Yeah, I stopped when it asked me to do every mission again, but slightly faster.

OH

SNAP

BLAST CORPS

My parents bought me this game the week it came out and I was hooked. They threatened to take it away because I wouldn't do my school work, hahaha. I still have my N64 in my closet collecting dust because I can't seem to find any N64 controllers offline and am too lazy to order a few. I still have Blast Corps (not my original copy, it's one I picked up from a flea market some years back. ), Diddy Kong Racing, GoldenEye 007, Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie 1 and 2.

I did recently bust out my Dreamcast, though. :O

Golded everything in that game. The moon/mars races were the toughest. And the dumptruck just sucked.

The real stuff I liked to play with in Blast Corps was the robots. Thunderfist rolled into ****, which was awesome. J-Bomb flied and destroyed **** at the same time, which was awesome. I remember a third robot that did acrobatics to destroy stuff. Which was awesome, too.

I always liked that carrier. It's so fun watching it slowly creaking towards Ground Zero, and watching it cause a nuclear winter because you left a vehicle in its path. =P

When I had this game, I actually kept two separate files; I had one that I had actually gotten all platinums on, (seeing "You Can Stop Now" after getting all platinums just wanted me to re-do the entire game again.) and a file for when I was bored; this file had all the main missions done, but not the shuttle/moon done; thus, I could re-explore all the areas without having to worry about that carrier.

Overall, Blast Corps was ****ING AWESOME. I'd like to see a sequel.

A beautiful game with beautiful music and a beautiful premise that was beautifully achieved. Pity it was marred by that stupid farking dumptruck.

I am pretty sure I got all the gold stars way back when I played it. I need to break out my (recently reacquired) copy and play it some more. Delicious stuff.

Wow, after over 10 years I am not the first person to make a thread asking about Blast Corps! This is epic! I am literally one of the very few people in the world who has actually gotten platinum on every single level. I know the count has to be ****ing LOW because as Tass said, the platinum reqs are just flat out stupid in some levels. Plus, hardly anybody has even played this classic; of those, I can't imagine how many actually said through the crap required to get all platinum.

Man, thanks for this thread. After all the Symphonia and Disgaea threads I've seen across message boards, this one made my day the most.

I also have received all of the platinums in the game, and without using the Z-trigger trick either. (Z-trigger trick makes some but not all platinums easier to get, some significantly easier)

I remember reading something in a gaming magazine at a store that said no one to date had all of the platinums in the game. Guess who had them? Yep.

Game advice I can give is to master every vehicle. Take every shortcut you can. Cut corners sharply. Remember that as long as you are airborne you will do a lot more damage and usually slice through things. And also know that if you are perfectly lined up perpendicular to the buildings (coming right in to the building perfectly head on) you will slice right through it or be more likely to, whereas if you are just the tiniest amount off you will probably just blacken it a bit and bounce around. Take your time to look around for the shortcuts in levels as well, such as the fake walls in some of the racing levels. Also know about the speed boosts which are necessary to gain the platinums in many of the levels. Press and hold the button right before the third light lights up. In levels without the light, you still hear the boop boop beep and you can still do it in those, right before that last beep.

If you're curious as to the Z-trigger glitch, notice that when you press and hold Z, the man gets out of the vehicle in one direction only (towards the Blast Corps van, actually). Well, put your vehicle right next to any destroyable structure and press and hold Z. You will hear "doh" a few times but then he will get out and no matter how strong the material was, that portion will be destroyed. Get back in your vehicle and do it again. This isn't too useful in most areas as it usually takes significantly longer to destroy buildings this way. Where it is useful is on the extremely strong buildings that otherwise take a lot of effort to take down and especially on the buildings where you otherwise need to cart the TNTs over to if you have to cart the TNTs over a large enough area.

Also there usually is a "correct" vehicle to use when you have a choice of start vehicle although in some cases it is possible to get the platinum with more than one. For example, in many cases you could choose the police car or the fast white car with bad steering and get the platinum. And in at least one case, you can get one particular one with either of those or even the van!

Red car: Average speed. Good startup. Really shines on grassy terrain and best choice to use here. Also small. Good handling so you may want to use this if there are a bunch of turns.

White car: Very fast. Terrible steering (keep it in mind). Grassy terrain absolutely kills the speed on this thing though and makes it run like a slug.

Police car: Fast. Potentially faster or as fast as the white car. Excellent steering. Terrible startup. If you pick this one you absolutely must get the speed boost by pressing before/during the third beep and never get slowed down.

Van: Reasonably fast. Reasonable on grassy terrain. The only one of the "cars" that is decent on rocky terrain/hills.

In most levels you are best off leaving the camera angle as it is but in at least two levels it actually is easier if you (quickly) turn the camera angle at the start for achieving platinum.

Also, in case you didn't know, you can erase your game (to start a new one) by holding Start on the controller before turning the N64 on, then turning it on (while still holding Start) and then it'll ask you if you want to delete your saved game. You would probably know this if you had the instruction manual but I assume many may have bought this second-hand and thus not have the manual. So I am telling you.

The two ground robots are best controlled by first pointing them in the initial direction of movement, then pressing and holding B and never releasing it but instead moving correctly from destroyable object to destroyable object. Sometimes the game lags a bit when using these and that lag can kill a platinum so just try again. Other times maybe you can barely nick something with these guys and it'll destroy. It's best with thunderfist if he nicks something to destroy it and moves on rather than if his fist goes way up in the air (that takes more time).

With the flying robot, try to fly him low to the ground and try to hit the bases of things. The only reason you'd want to fly him higher would be if something is just really high up or if you think you can destroy an entire large building in a single hit. Try to smack everything on the corners (this goes for all other vehicles too by the way). A corner hit does as much damage as a hit anywhere else and if you can, say, hit four pieces of a building on their corners, you'll destroy them all at once.

All vehicles are useful. The dumptruck is a necessary skill to master for completion of all platinums. It is awkward to control. It is very powerful but very awkward. If you get good with it you can throw it in semi-straight lines at things which does major damage. I say semi-straight because it will always curve but for a small distance you can straighten it out a bit.

My favorite vehicle in the game? That would have to be Ramdozer the bulldozer. Second favorite would be the flying robot. Of the cars I like the red car the best (yeah the one that looks and sounds basically like it was taken from Dukes of Hazzard)

Blast Corps was awesome and very challenging when I played it. If I still had the game I would gladly give it a second try and do better then how I did over 7 years ago.

This makes me want to go back and finish this game... I got about half the platinums but I couldn't figure out how to shave off those few tenths to push me over the edge.

I was hooked on this game from the first time I played it. The whole blow **** up to save the world concept struck me as awesome lol

By the way, I found the larger pacman-like maze level (Gibbon's Gate) to be the very hardest level in the game. For the longest time I had achieved all platinums except for this one and finally I achieved this one as well. You may want to save that one for last.

By the way, on any RDU collection levels, you are best off to remotely trigger rather than trying to literally run over everything, and the larger vehicles are better at remote trigger. So you'll want to pick the bulldozer when you can on those levels as it has great control and is large. In the cases where you can't, stick with the dump truck. As tempted as you may be, do not pick any of the cars on these levels as you really have to almost run right over those things to trigger with the cars.

And in case I wasn't clear earlier, a little bit of bump/wiggle to your vehicle is as good as being airborne in most cases. Keep it in mind. (Also keep in mind little bumps in the roads that you can take advantage of for a little wiggle). You do want to get in the air but you don't want to go too high into the air because it takes longer to fall down. On the other hand you don't want to be so low to the ground that you only half-plow through a building then bump when you could have gone a little higher to plow all the way through. Also the bump ramps generally perform better if you hit them straight on (perpendicular-like) as with the buildings. That gives less slowdown and reasonable air, usually. Exception: On Mars you want to hit those things really awkwardly so it shoots you very high into the air as you want air here, moreso than speed.

Also to keep in mind is that both pacman-like levels have patterns to them. Just because you are going the right pattern doesn't necessarily mean it'll work though because sometimes the trucks take unexpected turns. So sometimes it pays to stall a bit.

Another really hard level was Venus, so you may want to save that one for later as well.

This is just a very fun game and I have enjoyed playing through it many times. The storyline is lame/wack but the gameplay is where it's at and this game has excellent gameplay and challenge.

One last thing I forgot to mention is take advantage of nondestroyable terrain like trees and railroad tracks. If you are sliding against such as you go into something else you'll usually be able to slide right through it, destroying the building parts without a problem.
