I unlocked Pokemon Trainer last night, so I kind of had to put a stop to playing as Ridley.

More thoughts on Ridley.

His off stage game... is pretty bad, which is sad because I think he's got some wonderful tools to make use of when he is off stage. He's a very gimpable character, as was demonstrated to me personally roughly 10 matches in a row before I got the hint that I probably should stop going deep (unless I can tech consistently for inevitable stage spikes).

ok so "apparently" donkey kong and young link are both A tier, and regular Link is D tier... tbh i have no idea how they come up with this considering theres literally no tournament results yet but lol, sweet.. lol pokemon trainer D tier xd.. dunno how that makes sense since hes basically 3 characters and each of them would have different viabilities, i smell shenanigans

...Also also, if anyone is interested in doing online, or have been doing it (once you get past the $20 paywall anyways), I highly encourage you to use Battle Arena over Quickplay/Background. Time to go into more detail why because I think going forward, if they don't do anything about it, Quickplay/Background will be a total shitfest once the hype wears off because it'll be nothing but griefers/tauntparties.

Sakurai and co decided to make their matchmaking more on the random side instead of having a mode where you get to play 1v1's/TeamBattle/FFA's consistently. Now I don't mind playing with items, or playing on a stage with walk offs and nonsense going off, but when you match players with others that don't even WANT FFA, that's where I draw the line.

See, what happened here is that they stated matchmaking was going to prioritize proximity greatly while trying to match you with your preferred rules. Proximity being so you don't get a lobby filled with people with unstable connections pretty much. That's all fine and dandy and I'm cool with it, but what they don't say is that they mean it quite literally. It will pair you with proximity BEFORE gametype you want. Now I think you don't need me to say that there's something wrong here, because what you're probably thinking is right. Because proximity is such a huge factor here, it pretty much straight up IGNORES preferred rules and, BAM, you're stuck in a lobby where it's most likely an FFA (because that's the default) with STOCKS.

Let me go into more detail about how a FFA match with Stocks is bad: You'll get at least one or two or, hell, ALL players gang up on one player due to them having a stock lead, but they don't stop ganging up after evening the stocks so one player just ends up with no more stocks left due to being bullied out and the match still has 3-4 minutes to go and you're just stuck doing nothing. You can't back out, you can't quit, and if you even so much as TRY to go back to reset, the game will assume you left with ill intentions and warn/ban you for a number of x amount of minutes.

HOLY SHIT, WHAT WERE THEY THINKING WITH THIS!?

Thankfully, as bad as the Quickplay is, what's not bad at all and is actually the best mode for pretty much any fighting game I've seen played is Battle Arena.

So all the problems I just stated above? Gone, because you can make/choose what you want to play and others will follow suit. The only negative? You might get someone that has ass connection. It's pretty much the go to spot for now if you want to 1v1. I've tried it out a fair bit yesterday, it's actually really cool. Especially the ones that enable voice chat (through the phone, lul, good thing I use a phone emulator to bypass that shit).

1v1's a lot more fun when you can talk to people regarding matchups and whatnot as you see the battle in real time. Oh yeah, I should mention this mode has something I have not seen in Smash before. REAL TIME SPECTATING. You'd think it would muddy up the connection (it PROBABLY does a little bit, despite the spectator not sending anything), but I think the game tries its best to kick out players that can't watch because it just throws them a "communication error" message, but doesn't kick them from the entire room.

Quickplay will "quickly" be a bad mode. Always pick Battle Arena instead for online.

quickplay will always be a bad mode, FFA is dumb.. thanks for reminding me about taunt parties in brawl, those used to triggered me so much, taunt parties are the stupidest thing imagineable

and yea, it ignoring ur desired rules is stupid, even if you set it to like, no items, 1v1 etc, you can just end up in random games with terrible stages and hazards.. the best option is definitely going to be making your own room with a good ruleset

I wouldn't look at tiers until a couple of majors, my dude. Plus it'll be fluctuating like crazy since I'm gonna assume it's gonna be like Smash 4's with the balance patches.

Also, please for the love of god don't listen to Zero. He's a good player, but my GOD does he yap a lot. One day he'll say someone is top tier, and the next he'll say they're mid/low tier. Guy is never consistent and I encourage you to stop listening to him from here on out. Might I suggest someone that actually tries to be realistic about it and doesn't sprout inconsistent garbage information like ESAM or Nairo?

yea im not taking it too seriously until major tournaments. hell, even in melee, players have single handedly made characters higher tier, like without armada peach would probably be much lower, hbox made puff higher, without amsa etc yoshi would be irrelevant, the list goes on

also yea im not a fan of zero, i just googled "ssbu tier list smashboards" and the first result was a thread linking that video. I'm not too familiar with high level smash 4 players since im a melee nerd but ill check out Nairo and ESAM, i remember them from brawl/project M.. also that video hes doing is making fun of the tier list because its not based on character viability, its literally based on like "gaming influence" like they put game and watch as the last place because "he was just in a few handheld watch games and wasnt in any games", same with ice climbers etc, its pretty meme

also i think the tier list at the moment is sort of just based on like.. "frame data" and physics, like character weight and knockback etc, so obviously its sort of bs. we'll have to see how people perform with characters, yea

Even if the tier list is really bad atm and probably not accurate, i'd rather not invest time in a character that is clearly bad.. like, it didn't take an expert to realize that ganondorf in brawl is literal garbage, im sure a few characters in ssbu are like that as well

Think the character that looks like will always have a stuggle is actually... Ridley, lol. Too bad I find him hell-a fun to care. Against someone that knows what they're doing though, it's a bit rough, oof.

Maybe they'll buff him up later once they see no improvements to the amount of wins or something. His recovering is pretty ass and highly predictable.

Im actually really surprised you said that ridleys off stage game is garbage (lol i havent unlocked him yet, too lazy, I kno u can like, just do vs matches and swap languages/restart the game but im reaaallly lazy lol), i mean, i've only played a bit of super metroid but im really surprised he doesnt have like, a glide, and a shitload of jumps, like he has wings and flies during super metroid lol, wtf

maybe eventually he'll get a buff, him only having a double jump makes no sense at all
