Default Did Anyone else in US/CAN notice the Auroras 10/24/11?

http://www.theweathernetwork.com/new...age_topstories

Quote:
Cheryl Santa Maria, staff writer

October 25, 2011 — A spectacular light display was seen across Canada and as far south as Texas on Monday.
Don't miss...
What is the Aurora Borealis?
Auroras light up the night in both hemispheres
Stargazing

The light display was breathtaking
Skywatchers across Canada and the U.S. were recently treated to a light show, courtesy of Mother Nature.
A solar flare collided with the earth's magnetic field on October 24, causing the atmosphere to emit a stunning, multi-coloured glow - also known as the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights.
While common in the north, this display was seen as far south as Texas.
Viewers of The Weather Network reported seeing the lights from B.C. to Nova Scotia.
I was on my way home from school when I saw it in Toronto, one of the light polluted hubs of Canada. While faint green and red here, I immediately rushed home to grab my camera, but by the time I got back outside, it was gone. Did anyone else notice them last night?

Here are some photos from local people:

Toronto

Orangeville

Winnipeg (not local, but still a heavily light polluted city)

I think I missed it. Might have saw it though, because for about 10 minutes yesterday the sky was tinted red, haha.

I was indoors at a concert until 11pm which I think is 2am Toronto time, so I guess I missed it. I didn't even know it was going to happen.

I missed it but I heard my sister and mom talking about it today while I was play BF3. Wish I'd seen it. I hear it's pretty spectacular.

Astronomy is a hobby of mine, and the way it happens is through a solar storm hitting the magnetic shield. Or just radiation in general.

However, since most of it comes from the sun, and the sun tends to work in 14 year cycles, we are expecting the next maximum of this cycle to be March 2013. Which means leading up to this period, auroras should hit more frequently, and stronger as well. If you miss this maximum, you will have to wait until 2027 for the next one.

As for you Netjet!, that red tinted sky could very well have been the lights. They tend to be a mixture of green, red and purple lights.

I would've loved to have seen this stuff... damn. Unfortunately, I live so close to the Pacific Ocean that it's foggy just about every single night, so I miss out on cool things like meteor showers and auroras. Texas is pretty far south for an aurora...

Also,

Wat.
In the Southern Hemisphere, they're called the Aurora Australis, depending how remote you are, it may look like this:

Or if you're immediately below them:

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) can happen at any time, and that's where auroras are most likely to have a strong presence. There is an aurora tracker for the northern hemisphere on this site:
http://www.thenightskyguy.com/?page_id=24

It updates every 10 minutes. on the 24th, the yellow colour went as far south as just above Texas. You're probably not going to see anything unless you're at least in the white colour.

Maybe if I visit the US at the right time I can hang with some of you guize and admire the lights.

You can use this light pollution map of the Americas to gauge where you would find darker areas:

If you have an exact city I can give you a narrower window, down to a town. The further north (or south) you are, the better your chances at seeing auroras. If you are north, you'll get a pretty good show frequently if you are at Churchill or further north. (Or, northern ontario, Hudson bay area) Places such as Toronto and similar areas along the line will get shows during CMEs that travel towards earth. These are going to happen more and more frequently over the next couple years. The last one that happened was in mid september, 2011.
