I agree that SOPA and PIPA are way too dangerous to be passed in their current forms; it turns us users into criminals.

Default PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet

PROTECT IP / SOPA Breaks The Internet

Tell Congress not to censor the internet NOW! - fightforthefuture.org/pipa

PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting "creativity". The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites-- they just have to convince a judge that the site is "dedicated to copyright infringement."

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that's for a fix that won't work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights. Go Watch this Video Right Now.

Click on it. http://vimeo.com/31100268

God I have no idea how to even do this question justice. It'd require essays. There are many reasons why "we let them stay that way." IMO it ultimately boils down to lack of power, money, education, and mobility (plus a ton of money being pushed against your favor in all four of these categories).

I don't see any difficulty in believing Obama here, since he'd be taking a firm stance against the least popular piece of legislation put forth during his term. You can absolutely bet your testicles that he'd veto the shitsucker, especially with re-election coming up.

It'll still be mad-depressing if it passes the House/Senate. Money talks. :/
Reminds me of when Obama said he would veto the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) Bill, then he retracted his veto, and signed the bill. Hmm.

EDIT: Woops, someone already ninja'd me.

Usa politics, wtf.

It's hardly even a question to me. What would be the advantages?

And didn't Obama tried to have China remove their censorship because "Internet is freedom and knowledge and it should be accessible to every individual"???

Fuu, Get off with this retarded shit and gimme back my wikipedia.

Son of a bitch people, do your research! Comments like these make me angry because it just goes to show you that propaganda works. To answer who_cares earlier comment, this is a great example of the "education" point. When you don't know what's going on, you're likely to get pissed off at the wrong people, and you're likely to support the wrong people, in turn.

On the topic regarding NDAA:

It was obvious that NDAA was going to pass in the first place, considering the circumstances. The NDAA was, on the whole, military funding for 2012 (it's NOT an "Indefinite Detention Bill"). The sketchy aspects of NDAA were poison pills inserted in there by Republican legislators, and Obama had no power over this. It was a political game in Congress with the intention of putting Obama in a tough position of pissing off his base with the upcoming election.

By vetoing NDAA, he would be vetoing the *entire* bill. Obama would have basically been cutting off funding to veterans and their families. Soldiers need to eat, too. Obama's veto would have been overridden by Congress anyway. So he could have either chosen to commit political suicide by signing to ostensibly screw over our defense, or he could have chosen to piss off his base by signing something that has unsavory subfunctions embedded into it. The obvious choice is the latter -- it's much better to sacrifice political capital than it is to commit political suicide. It was a lose/lose situation for Obama.

Besides, there's nothing in the NDAA that screws you over any harder that isn't already included in the Patriot Act (i.e. it doesn't affect you).

If you seriously blame Obama for not vetoing NDAA -- congrats. You're the type of dumbass the Republicans rely on to keep voting them into power.

It's different when it comes to SOPA. Obama will absolutely veto it if it ever makes it that far (which is very doubtful) because the situation is clearly different. SOPA is extraordinarily unpopular and it makes Obama look great if he stands against it. Signing SOPA would kill his chances for re-election.

Hmmm.
