What Color is this Dress omg wow

So there's this stupid shit going around the internet, where people have varying opinions on whether this dress is either white and gold, or blue and black.

It's making quite a stir on Twitter and everywhere else people spout opinions on the internet.

First of all, to me it actually appears neither white and gold nor blue and black, but rather light blue and brown.

And it turns out I'm right: the image itself is light blue and gold-brown.
The dress, in reality, however, is actually blue and black.

If you use the eyedropper tool in an image editing program, the image of the dress is very clearly shades of unsaturated light blue and some browns that have hints of yellow in them.
We know the dress is blue and black in reality because it's from Roman Originals.
However this doesn't explain everything.

People's perceptions largely come from different interpretations of the illuminant(s) in the scene. If your brain is interpreting it with a single bright illuminant (ostensibly a camera flash) coming from the point of the viewer, your mind will correct the image of the dress itself to be blue and black. This is a result of accounting for the bright light source (this is clearly what happened in reality). Alternatively you can view it being colored by a soft blue illuminant, or see it as being under a bluish shadow, and your mind will correct the color of the dress itself to white and gold. It's just a question of whether you are attributing the blue to the light or the dress itself.

This image shows (compared to the original in the middle) what you might perceive if you balance the image to the light areas (consistent with seeing the blueness come from a light) versus balance it to the dark areas (consistent with attributing the blueness to the dress)


tl;dr the image is actually light blue and brown, the dress is actually blue and black, perception varies based on how your mind is constructing the scene's lighting

I clicked the link you provided of the dress, and saw gold and white. I scrolled down to see if there were any comments, but there were only likes. I scrolled back up, and saw blue and black. Then I realized my mind played a trick on me, and I was able to distinguish the gold and white again.

My buddy sent this to me last night and I was sure it was black and blue, which he agreed on. However, his and my girlfriend both saw white/tan and gold/brown.

Apparently (and Im not sure there is proof in this batch of pudding) the scientific jargon states seeing blue/black means the way our eyes' cones see light in dim setting is superior to those who see the dress in white/gold.

Additionally, the woman who posted the picture has supposedly confirmed the dress is in fact blue/black.

Point Being: I have a twig and berries and unless the dress is on a woman, I am not concerned, but its a funky mind trick nonetheless.

The first time I saw it posted I saw white and gold, no hint of blue or black at all. Then I saw it posted by someone else and saw it as blue and black. I thought that maybe it was different pics floating around or that it showed up differently in different places type deal. So I asked AJ what color he saw and he was seeing the white and gold while I was seeing the blue and black on the same screen. I thought that was really interesting.

I can't seem to ever see it as the white and gold anymore, I only see the blue and black now whenever it pops up.

I saw white and gold at first, scrolled down to read some comments on a page, went back up and was like wtf its blue and black now… Then it slowly turned back to white and gold and now I can't see it as black and gold.

Not going to read the whole thread, but its white and gold. Once youve seen the blue and black fake your eyes adjust to it and thats what you see from then on. I only saw white and gold at first for like every post on fb, then once i saw the other they all changed, even the status's that i commented on saying white and gold because thats what i saw.
This was prob mentioned but oh well. It might "look" blue and black, but its not.

Actually there was a facebook post by the person who took the picture, he can confirm that the dress is in-fact, blue & black.
