She was an amazing cat, if just a bit of a bully when it came to other cats, but she was a super sweetheart to everyone in my family.

One day though, we noticed she was getting lumps. Soon after, we learned she wasn't eating. We tried our best to figure out what was going on, but one vet visit was enough to tell us the worst, she had cancer.

We should've put her down there, we didn't. We took her back home, and tried to make her comfortable. It was obvious she wasn't though. She would sit in a corner, away from everyone, not going to me, still not eating. It got to a point in which she was just... pure bones due to her cancer and her just not eating.

...After 2-3 weeks, we finally decided to put her down, but she may as well have been dead those weeks. She wasn't happy, she wasn't meowing, and she certainly wasn't showing the love she showed before.
If it were me, and someone held a gun to my head saying “off your pet or you’re gonna die”

I would probably go with the best and most natural option, releasing them in a forest so they can spend their last days in piece and surrounded by the dirt from which they came; instead of in a man-made vets office, with spiky needles going in them, bright lights shining in their face, and being forced to lay down on a hard bed for their final moments.

I wouldn’t wanna go in a hospital either. If anything, I’d ride a boat out into the middle of the ocean, and fire a gun through the side of my head.

Hope this provides some insight…

You’re right. I should’ve maybe just taken the day off. I’m getting a bit worked up, it feels like everyone’s out to get me.

Medication is certainly a big part in this tho, hormone levels too, even tho in my case, they’re both practically the same cause of the nature of gender transition.

I hope you realize how inconsistent you're being by saying this.

I mean to be fair, pets don't consent to vaccinations, being adopted, and plenty of other things that are well-understood to increase the longevity and happiness of pets.

Animals also don't consent to being killed for human consumption.

The notion of "consent" doesn't really seem to translate to animals that well.

Leaving a cat/dog in the wilderness would probably "put them down" for sure, but it certainly wouldn't be as peaceful as you're making it out to be. It'd be very violent.

Survival of the fittest and all that jazz.

this argument is used in court when someone knows about the crime of murder and it actually means that you're complicit in the murder of literally billions of animals per year
if you truly believe that what that guy did was murder then logically speaking you should be completely and utterly outraged at what the meat industry does to animals
but ofc we know you're not because logic and mental brainpower doesn't exactly seem to be your strong suit

There you go

Now apply that with a lethal injection from the veterinarian and it's a very similar opinion.

I mean to be fair it's not a good analogy because suicide is "consenting" while lethal injections technically would not be

I still argue that thinking in terms of consent is not fruitful in the context of discussing putting down animals

hell yeah dude whenever my cat gets terminally ill instead of providing her with some peace with a quick and painless death I'll release her into a nearby forest, effectively abandoning her to a lonely death at the hands of some predator who will tear her to shreds

I’ve condemned mass killing of animals and slaughterhouses before tho.

I think my dog would need to be informed of the risks and sign a left of consent first for that to work

Now see here, I'm a bird lover and love my birds, but I won't lie and say eating some bird is immoral.

That would be guilt free way of doing it, and it would release them back into nature so the circle of life could continue. I couldn’t live with having my pet murdered at human hands.
