Default Switching from arrow keys to askl

hokai so I have been playing for a while using 2 hands on arrow keys and recently decided to give askl a shot. I'm using the same fingers I used on arrow keys(muscle memory yo) but I've noticed I still have to drop the difficulty of songs I play and even then can't really keep up with what I've been used to. Main question I have is this; Is there any definitive benefit to using askl over arrow keys or is it all psychological?

Once you get used to spread you will get better. I used to play on the arrow keys like you and was really reluctant to move to spread because I was playing worse and it felt awkward, but once I adjusted to how it felt I started improving at a rapid rate.

Your fingers are quite cramped when you use arrow keys; the extra room will be to your benefit when you get to the upper skill levels. Just stay with it and you'll adjust eventually.

This. All the way. If memory serves, she and I decided to switch at around roughly the same time and both of us saw enough gains to get a few Most Improved Player votes during the annual forum awards that year.

The main benefit to moving away from the arrow keys is it lets you hit hands and quads without worrying about losing presses to ghosting. Of course, you can refine this further with something like WSLP, which lets you maintain a more natural angle for your wrists, but it's all about what you're comfortable with. For now, you have to get used to the fact that your up arrow finger is on the same level as your right arrow finger. Funnily enough, I occasionally went back to the arrow keys for fun and I found that I still had most of the speed I had on spread. This was before I had to get a laptop, however...

(I'm going to come clean here: I went arrows to arrow/numpad, to ASIL, to ASKL; as you can see, it's a process like getting used to a different speedmod.)

Thanks for the replies. I went back today and tried a few songs around the difficulty im used to playing at (im by no means a fantastic player, hell the only song I've AAA'd is excite bike) but I'm noticing I still have the speed, its more or less getting used to where my hands are now that's the issue. I'll definitely work on it, as a lot of the benign things I used to slip up I'm not doing as frequently with askl. Once again thanks!

I used to play on QWOP all the time. Then my keys broke and I switched to ERUI.

p.s. switching to spread is probably like turning inverted X axis off on an FPS game lmao

I use GHKL, my laptop doesn't ghost those keys.
