Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
avalon vales is a fantastic album, although I didn't like it personally
I liked a lot of the chaos of lauren's stuff under the ndad alias, and this album was pretty tame compared |

Ziltoid's not a bad album, methinks.
Also, if I could make one final change to my recommendations...could you swap out "Danza IV" with "Pokémon X & Pokémon Y Super Music Collection"?

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
Happy Day.
Got a job last week, that's one of the reasons I didn't submit anything (need to settle things first). Day Seventy-One - February 9th, 2014 ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Hexes by Dirty Art Club (recommended by Kekeb) 1. Black Acid 2. Full Metal Jacket 3. Hexes 4. Into the Night 5. Minilla 6. Rosslyn's Crypt 7. Slow Burner 8. Dead Man's Letters A very cinematic trip with an interesting blend of different genres (psychedelic pop, electronic, instrumental hip hop). The production is reminiscent of Rome by Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi which is, frankly a good thing (it was one of my favourite albums for 2011). There isn't any low points on this ep and the songs were diverse while keeping the same similar vibe. I liked it but I'm not sure if I'll return to it anytime soon.* High 7, close to a 8. * Why ? I usually listen songs on shuffle on iTunes. There are albums I prefer listening as a whole and this is one of them. My rating : ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Day Seventy-Two - February 10th, 2014
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ Toxicity by System of a Down (recommended by yo man im awesome) 1. Prison Song 2. Needles 3. Deer Dance 4. Jet Pilot 5. X 6. Chop Suey! 7. Bounce 8. Forest 9. ATWA 10. Science 11. Shimmy 12. Toxicity 13. Psycho 14. Aerials Nostalgic incoming review. System of a Down was probably the very first band I had discovered on my own and truly loved. When I was 14, I was looking for all their cds, listening to them again and again on my old portable cd player. They made me love metal (up to that point I was listening to pop punk/rock stuff like Blink-182, Sum 41, Green Day, Linkin Park) so I respect them for that. It was, however, a logical continuation from a music point of a view as a teen. I was looking for more harsher and expressive music so it was only a matter of time before I get to them. So, saying that, I'm incredibly biased when it comes to the content on this album. As much as I would like to review Toxicity neutrally, I feel it won't be possible, so I'll be sincere. System of a Down's music is mostly metal in nature but includes elements from nu metal, experimental and folk music, and have comedy/satirical lyrics and thrash/groove riffs. They were able to create a very unique sound, completely new to the metal scene. What also make them worth of mention are the vocals and Daron's guitar work. While Serj provides most of the vocals (which are already eclectic), Daron's parts are incredibly intense and engaged (read, not for everyone - even myself I find his voice annoying sometimes). The guitar is wide, ranging from light picking moments to heavy riff driven sections. Some of my favourite moments are the bridge in Deer Dance around 1m40, the piano ending of Chop Suey! (obv) and the vocal harmonies on Aerials. The big problem with System of a Down is the inconsistency their albums have. The low points are decent at best but they interfere deeply with the high points, and those are pretty damn good to say the least. My rating : ★★★★★★★★★☆ I wanna know, what do you think of this album ? It's really a diverging album (similar to MSI) so I want to know what you guys think of it.

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
Serj is the only member of soad with anything that resembles talent. the dude's solo work and his non-soad collab work outranks anything the band as a whole ever made.
that said- serj is a low rent mike patton wannabe system of a down, like a huge chunk of early 2000s nu-metal groups that got big, is just a low rent Mr. Bungle system of a down's only album worth even half a shit is Steal This Album, because that one didn't reak of trying too hard, and didn't take itself seriously, but even that album is like a 6/10 at best |

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
As a big Bungle fan... How the fuck is SOAD a Bungle rip-off? Or nu-metal in general? I HATE 95% of nu-metal and the only Bungle songs that are nu-metal-esque are, like, one-third of the debut. Disco Volante and California, albums usually much better regarded, are nothing close to nu-metal.

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
bungle themselves aren't nu-metal, yo. i never said that. go look at interviews from nu-metal bands circa 2000-2003, most of them list bungle as a huge influence in both bassline formation and guitar riff construction. SOAD isn't "ripping them off" per se, but it's just a low rent execution of the same idea- "hey guys what if frank zappa made metal? that'd be cool. let's do that". It's just that idea watered down.
that's just how i see it tho. |

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
SOAD is indeed similar to Mr. Bungle by their experimental and wacky nature but the comparison stops here. And yeah, Mike Patton is definitely a superior singer than Serj Tankian in every aspect, but that's an unfair comparison because Mike Patton is on another freaking planet.

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
I'm gonna assume all those bands heard only the first Bungle album (which is "pretty good" circus-funk-thrash metal). I can't find any nu-metal albums that sound like California.

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
the bulk of their influence definitely comes from the first one. i love their entire discog (except for a couple of the demos) but the first one is definitely their weakest.
if either of you want bands that sound like Disco Volante and California era bungle, check out Tub Ring's first two albums. they're like that era bungle but more rooted in punk than metal and with lyrics that are (somehow) even more esoteric |

Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
I've been considering on listening to Toxicity for a couple of days now just to remember how it's like - SOAD used to be one of my favourite bands as well (but at the same time I was into TDG and FOB...) so I wonder how it aged over the time I forgot about the band.
Also recommending more music just to make my recommendations more eclectic: * The Avalanches - Since I Left You * Dev/Null - Lazer Thrash * Disarmonia Mundi - Fragments of D-Generation * Natural Snow Buildings - The Dance of the Moon and the Sun * Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet * World's End Girlfriend - Hurtbreak Wonderland (swap this with Seven Idiots, by the same artist) * 夢中夢 [Mutyumu] - イリヤ -Il y a- Initially wanted to recommend Flood as well but I see that Crazyjayde already recommended that. Re: Need music recommendations | 1 year challenge
I recently just found System of a Down again, ironically, I hadn't listened to them in a long while.
I've come to really enjoy their self titled album and their double albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize more than the others. Steal This Album! and Toxicity are also fantastic, but in personal opinion I prefer the other albums. Fitting review if you ask me EDIT: Speaking of which, if you could replace Common Courtesy with SOAD's Mezmerize that'd be cash money
