2012...
There's a lot of discussion on teh 1n732w3bz that the apocalypse is going to somehow beckon the end of humankind in 2012. I think this is about as possible as every human being alive having sex within the next year.
The Mayans had a calender that extended to 2012, and it's prophetic that once the calender "expires" the planet will follow. Now, I'm not one for astrology, prophecy and archaeological history, but I am one for detecting complete and utter bull****. The calender is very archaic, hundreds of years ago. Yet, the Mayans did not predict anything more. They drew a perpetual calender (you can find these in encyclopedias, that also stop at particular dates, all of which are meaningless) to forecast planting and harvesting seasons, climate patterns, etc... Yes, the calender is immensely complex. I do not believe a longer perpetual calender has ever been drawn. Now, I highly doubt that this civilization heard "the word of God", or any other signal that the world will end. Frankly, if something does happen, it will be by great coincidence. Expect to live the next day. |

Re: 2012...
I'm not sure that this is critical thinking material, but it won't happen, and even if you argue this what will the person say when we all do die? That he was right. Yep, definitely will not happen.

Re: 2012...
I have to agree with you when you say the entire -end of the world via myan calender- prophecy is a load of crap. I actually don't know enough about it to make a valid argument, or hold any kind of justified belief, but the concept of predicting the end of the world through using a two-thousand year old calender just never sat well with me.
More to the point of this post, there have been several threads about this in the past. Since it looke like you're new, you should search throguh the forums using the "search" feature next time to make sure your thread hasn't allready been created. On a closing note, welcome to CT and FFR EDIT: lol at me being in the thread and still being beat by three lousy posts. Last edited by Sullyman2007; 07-4-2008 at 08:36 PM.. |

Re: 2012...
I think this has been brought up multiple times before.
The whole 2012 myth arose from misinterpretation of the Mayan calender and from there mutated into rumor spreading. The Mayan calender never ends, and does not end in 2012. The Mayan Long count ends, but this means nothing at all, as it has already ended some 13 times. It's about the equivalent of our Millennium; nothing more, nothing less. So yeah, nothing bad is going to happen. As a side note, the Mayans actually have written of things they predicted would happen long after 2012. Also, the calender seems over hyped from myth when it comes to it's complexity...it's terribly inaccurate in many ways, actually. For example, the calender we use instead is used because it is significantly better at the division and prediction of the 4 seasons.

Re: 2012...
If he'd have searched, he'd have seen that the previous threads in CT on this subject were all moved to chit-chat or locked. One more pike with a skull on it for future unwary travellers I suppose.
