Why is the First Person Genre so popular?

Sorry, I must have been confused when reading your post.

You begin by talking about the FPS learning curve. Then you talk about Call of Duty and claim it has an easy learning curve. You move onto RTS games, giving StarCraft as an example and claim that it's more complex. You move back to FPS games and give an example of one with more advanced mechanics and end your post with this TL;DR:

I leave out information that I think need not be mentioned, but then I leave holes, so sorry for the confusion! I can understand how you would think that though. I used other examples just to contrast the numbers because lets face it, Call of Duty is the clear victor in terms of the number of players that play for the FPS genre.

I don't have any numbers, but from my perspective, I can agree with you in terms of FPS popularity. The louder a group is, the more attention they get. When people who are not into FPS games look over at the genre, they are deafened by the screaming CoD fans, and other fans of various big name titles. It's understandable why their first impression would be corrupt.

However, they should also realize how inaccurate first impressions can be, and shouldn't be so quick to judge.

It's painful to watch people stand by these exact ideals in certain arguments, then quickly turn around and break the fundamentals of said ideals for convenience in other arguments.

Off topic: I'm super tired right now. It's kind of hard for me to concentrate on this thread.

many many other games sell millions, and league of legends & dota is more popular by far than shooters

have you seen streams? who's on top all the time, and who watches what? nobody watches shooting game streams on a regular basis - on the other hand everybody watches MOBAs & other games on a regular basis

I'm pretty sure people can be into more than one genre of gaming at a time. Besides, I'm fairly sure your viewpoint is just as biased as his.

my answer: it's popular just because it's a game, like many other games in other genres
mike weedmark comments: first person shooters are very dominant in the gaming industry
my response: fps isn't "dominant" in the gaming industry, as a matter of fact many other genres are on-par if not more popular than first person shooters

Also, your picture represents one platform very well. Where are your statistics for the others? It may be only my imagination, but I was pretty sure many FPS fans reside on console platforms.

Your picture does accurately portray how RTS/MOBA gamers are mostly isolated to the PC. At least, that's all I got out of it. Maybe that's another thing I shouldn't be taking so literally as well, huh?

all other consoles completely dwarf shooters by tenfolds
