Guys, I got StepMania into AGDQ!!

Holy shit.. people are really on a next level with this game now. Really fun watch and happy to see rhythm games getting some exposure!

Ended up going live just a bit too late for me, had to give in to sleep about an hour before this went live and I haven't had a chance yet to sit down and watch it yet, getting off from work in a couple of hours.

Still, it was just fun to read through all the build up hype and the reaction that went on in here while I was asleep (all 250 posts that happened just during that O_o). I feel really bad missing this live though =(.

also lol@those iidx retards complaining. IIDX showcase would be much more boring (I played it for more than 10 years now I know it k), what they need is LR2 bms showcase.

The biggest thing that has been said as a point is:

If you thought that a different rhythm game such as IIDX or pop'n or LR2 or w/e should have been showcased, then you should have gotten someone to offer it up to AGDQ.

Games Done Quick is not done on an invite basis, but is completely voluntary, and you have to go through the process of putting up your segment and hoping that it goes through selection. Thinking that this is a "slap in the face" is pretty much disregarding all the work that Staiain did to A) get stepmania into AGDQ, B) travel all the way over to the US to showcase this, and C) the fact that there's literally no downside to the extra exposure that stepmania gets - it definitely doesn't negatively impact any other rhythm based game. I don't think we ever said once in the stream that stepmania was representative of all video games. I even introduced it as a "DDR Clone for the PC" not "the best rhythm game and only one that should have been showcased in AGDQ".

seriously though, i hope that people who were complaining about not having a different rhythm game showcased, or that it "wasn't impressive compared to other games", then go use this as a platform. Staiain set a massive precedent, getting a fucking rhythm game into a speedrunning marathon. We all know it's possible, so instead of complaining and feeling insulted, choose to feel inspired. Also, who cares that you didn't think it was impressive. We raised over $10,000 dollars during our 30 minute segment, and the second highest viewcount of AGDQ history, right behind mario maker which was yesterday. And if you look at the graphs of viewer count, mario maker spiked at the beginning, then dwindled below 200k. stepmania literally climbed higher and higher throughout the whole entire segment.

Complaining about stepmania being showcased can be equated to complaining that 10,000 dollars were donated towards preventing cancer. take a step back and look at the bigger picture, won't you.

my initial reaction when i heard stian had gotten the stepmania showcase passed the first adgq cuts is probably the same that most people who are familiar with the game had, which was "lol the fuck stepmania has nothing to do with speed running"

but the more i thought about it the more i realized that stepmania more than almost all other rhythm games fully embodies the spirit of speed running—which is to trim away all the fat on an existent game and optimize performance on it to the absolute maximum possible.

the entire point of speed running is to throw away all the crap that distracts you from a singular objective and to push yourself to become as efficient as possible in reaching that objective

and in kind stepmania has a very long history of systematically cutting away all the crap that gets in the way of pure performance

in fact the very notion of deliberately showcasing a rhythm game that inserts as many pointless mechanisms as possible to provide a "fully fleshed out, approachable, accessible experience" is antithetical to the spirit of speed running

it would be like having a "heres every possible mod in skyrim that you can play and all the different things you can do in those mods" showcase

But yeah on all the other stuff no matter what there will always be negativity with these types of things. Overall no matter what all the talk of it has had Stepmania trending all over the place and had a huge turnout on the stream. It's a good day regardless of all the haters.
