Default Jumpstream on Pad

I have been wondering, can't find any videos or anything regarding is.

Is it possible to jumpstream on pad? I mean, to me personally, it seems like pad players are just like "oh jumpstream sucks on pad, lets play pad charts with NO JUMPS" and such.. It's like me saying "I'm bad at jacks, I should only play jack files."

Now, what I'm wondering is.. if someone just practiced it enough, could you potentially do some bomb jumpstreams on pad? I don't see what would make it necessarily harder than regular pad stream other than it just being a different skillset.

Like, I'm talking would someone be able to do the easier Nuclear Blast tier JS on a pad, with enough practice? Or is it just physically impossible and that's why pad is always stream songs

Near physically impossible, and with pad playing you need to keep stamina in mind. Even just 8th note jumps all in a row can get exhausting if played for long enough, let alone jumpstream. That being said, I have seen pad players play jumpstream files on a few vids (wish I could dig them up), but they don't play in a normal manner. Instead they use the heel and toe of each foot for two arrows, so you end up with a lot smaller motion and the ability to play certain amounts of jumpstream. Shit's really hard though and I'm not sure how many people have done this.

Anyway, for 99% of pad players songs with fewer jumps are more fun largely because it conserves stamina, but also it's just fun and more natural to execute regular stream on pad.

Found an oldie video.

Jumpstream sucks on pad, if for no other reason than that you're essentially doing alternating minijacks with your feet for the entire stream if you're not playing heel toe. It's just not worth learning because regular streams are fun enough to play and doubles can satisfy an itch for more difficulty if even that gets too easy.

honestly jumpstreaming on a pad is shit, but sometimes it produces hilarious results (gluts are also painful on pad but hey it's not as bad in comparison)

(a lot of talking in the vid but w/e)

Jumpstreams are absolutely doable on pad, but they need to be crafted very carefully. You cannot use [23] or [14] jumps unless you have the intent of abusing chord cohesion (see: Bring Me To Life SX16 from SV2).

For example, here's something that I came up with in an ITG chart that I was was working on:

This is for the most part, 100% doable without too many issues if you have the technique. In fact, the hardest thing to hit in this entire sequence is the [24] jump at the very end. The reason why this is doable is because all of the jumps are placed in such a way that your feet can bridge along the brackets diagonally. The repeated notes are all foot-switches.

Case in point, some well crafted thought out jumpstream: Doable

Nuclear Blast JS: Naw bro

yeah I can see why people would think it's gross, but I see what you mean by designing it to be possible.

I still dunno though, I agree stamina is a thing but when I see things that people push themselves to play on keyboard, I still feel like if someone dedicated tons of time to it they could do some bomb stuff

Shieeet, jumpstreams are definitely possible on pad, but it kind of depends on the pad you're using. There's also a specific technique involved. I think it's called the heel/toe technique or something of the sort. I've seen folks play jumpstream heavy files, full combo'ing and even AAAing them, and it looks like they barely even lift their feet off the pad.

Edit: Pretty much like TC_Halogen is describing.

At the end of the day, keyboard-style jumpstream on pad is awkward and almost universally unenjoyable.

It's a completely different way of playing the game - like spread vs index. Playing on pad in a spread-like fashion kind of defeats the purpose of playing on pad instead of keyboard the first place, and is just not the kind of thing most( any ) high level pad players are interested in.

I think it's also worth putting out an additional disambiguation between what charts like what I'm working on are doing (which utilize jumps in this way) against the idea of jumpstreaming: despite the chart visually appearing to utilize heavy amounts of jumps, the motion in concept literally has no jumps whatsoever, it's just to add an additional layer of precision by forcing hits along diagonals between panels. And I'm certainly far from the only person to do this -- even lower level (relatively speaking) charts have started to utilize corner jumps with the intent of them being hit with a single foot.

When I went to Champions of the Coast a few weeks ago, I sightread Sudzi's Pitagora's Kiss (SX11), and it utilized jumps with the intent of being done along the brackets. It's becoming more and more common place because pad stepartists are looking for ways to be creative, and unfortunately... with only 4 panels, you can only go so far.

It looks aesthetically strange from a pad-play perspective to have something like above when there's no intent on doing jumps at all. That's one of the reasons why I, among many other pad-oriented content creators, are very excited about Rhythm Horizon. Hell, I had a bit of fun just working on Technomotion-styled charts for pad a couple of years ago and wished there was more that I could do to actually span away from just ITG, heh.
