Dominion is good practice for unconventional lane matchups. You can learn a lot about 1v1s if you go bot- who your champ can and cannot duel early on- and general teamfights if you go top for the initial 4v4 for windmill. Most Dominion games follow that 1 bot 4 top strategy and it's nice to learn your champ's positioning.

What it doesn't teach is the intricacies of Summoner's Rift 5v5s (such as warding and objective control) but you will learn that in time if you want to.

I prefer Dominion over the main game too. It's just more fun. And the people aren't dicks like in normal 5v5's. Just me though.
