So I thought this would be a good time to try some speed-painting, because I rarely do any real backgroundy stuff, and ... yeah, I don't know, I don't really "get it". Obviously it doesn't look near the same as y'alls ... And this took like two hours or something.

Can one of you link me to a video that explains how painting in photoshop (that is what you're using right?) works?

I can't find one that isn't just a how to.

So basically, post your paintings in this thread similar in style to the (previously posted) pics here?

(sick stuff in this thread)

I might try something if I have time or feel inspired...

I like the last picture; the way the sunlight pours through the clouds and crawls over the mountains is awesome. And that water is fantastically detailed and realistic-looking to me. I also like the contrast of the dark trees vs. the rest of the picture and the green firefly highlights up front -- very cool IMO. It's one of those things where you can really imagine being there and what it'd be like.

how the hell do you guys do this

seriously

"herp derp practice"

I mean it -- sometimes I don't even understand this stuff, whether it's the texture of the fur or the detail of a cluster of leaves or the gradients of light... amazing stuff

For me, it's a matter of getting the composition right, everything else after that is detailing which requires knowledge of the materials you're painting. And ofcourse knowing your tool which requires practice.

I'd say, just try painting stuff with the photoshop brush tool and a tablet. Experiment with different brush settings, see what fits best for you. Post your work and we'll be happy to post critique on it.

I honestly wouldn't even know where to begin -- I worry if I got a tablet, it'd wind up being a wasted investment. I have absolutely no clue how those kinds of pictures are put together. Whenever I dick around in PS using the brush my attempts at coloring *anything* look like crap, lol.

Just start drawing. Draw what you see, draw from your imagination, whatever. Just start drawing. Draw everyday (something I should uphold better myself but it's true nonetheless)
If you're bad at faces, draw faces. If you're bad at hands, draw hands. If you're bad at anatomy, practice anatomy. If you're bad at materials such as metal or gold, draw them. Gotta draw 'em all!

Hey ps Rene, something was bothering me on the matte painting, but I figured out what it is! Your lighting (sun) is coming from the right side while the castle's shadow side is also on the right side haha.

I've asked artists in my school and on AIM, and besides "practice" (which they know is absolutely useless advice in practical terms), they mentioned how a lot of it comes from observation in general. Examples include wearing a long sleeved shirt and seeing how the colors work out in different positions.

If you look at your arm, for example, there are darker shades of color in certain areas depending on the angle. Artists use their memory/experience to determine where these different color values would be. I happen to be someone with a poor memory for things like this, and because I require a lot of explanation and shading is more about observation/remembering from experience in general, shading is an absolute nightmare for me.

If there is one thing about art that stands out to me immediately and also pisses me off the most when I try it, it's shading. Haha

I've only started to take a very rudimentary interesting in drawing recently...I've learnt that I have to see everything in cones, cylinders and spheres (and cubes) as the most basic infrastructure of an object or component.
