Oooo, now this will be neat. Time to go through all of my favourite stuff and see what actually came out in the '10s.

Hail the Villain - Population: Declining (Alternative Rock) [2010]

Marionette - Nerve (Melodic Death Metal) [2011]

Omnium Gatherum - New World Shadows (Melodic Death Metal) [2011]

Protest the Hero - Volition (Progressive Metal) [2013]

Scar Symmetry - The Singularity (Phase I: Neohumanity) (Melodic Death Metal) [2014]

Helion Prime - Helion Prime (Power Metal) [2016]

The Unguided - Lust and Loathing (Melodic Death Metal) [2016]

Unleash the Archers - Apex (Power Metal) [2017]

Coheed and Cambria - Vaxis – Act I: The Unheavenly Creatures (Progressive Rock) [2018]

Omnium Gatherum - The Burning Cold (Melodic Death Metal) [2018]

Iiiiiiiii might have some genre preferences...

5. 36 - Fade to Grey (Reinterpreted) (2019)
6. Lord Snow - Solitude (2013)
7. William Basinski - Cascade (2015)

Mostly ambient and drone because I like the sound of glaciers moving. 2013, 2015, and 2019 were the best years of the decade for me. Konoyo/Anoyo is easily my favourite ambient project of the decade.

porter robinson- worlds
kendrick lamar- damn.
taylor swift- 1989
dabin- alive
lights- siberia
halsey- badlands
phoebe ryan- mine ep
daft punk- random access memories
billie eilish- when we all fall asleep, where do we go?
madeon- adventure
tonight alive- what are you so scared of?
monstercat's best of 2013 album (okok ik what you're thinking but that album changed the game for me)

i'll keep updating this as i think

illenium's my fav artist but his songs are hit or miss for me. they're not all contained in an album. and ascend is good but too poppy; not entirely my jam
the phoenix is my favorite song of all time. it's from 2014. i wanted a phoenix tattoo because of that song but now that illenium's more mainstream that sounds tacky, haha.

Off the top of my head The Now Now (Gorillaz) and Unvarnished (Joan Jett) are 2 albums I got brand bloody new this decade and have listened to a metric asston. Well, those and all the Ninja Sex Party albums.

If I had my collection in front of me I'd likely think of at least a few more that I could recommend.

....but I do think I'm old enough that the stereotype of "old man can't dig newer music and is stuck in his youth" is starting to be a thing. I felt kinda down the other day and cheered myself up by listening to Ayu's Rainbow again and its like....dude that shit is 2007. But I still love it, and I'm content with that.

also, porter robinson and madeon are 100% cross generational, we got zoomers AND millennials into that shit

when madeon first started making music he wasn't even old enough to get into the club I saw him at he was like 14 lol, everyone who listened to him back then was older than he himself is

It is kind of a bummer that the music I use for junk food has this laungage barrier that makes it hard to share with friends. Although if I'm playing Car DJ, my knowledge of classic rock and obscure euro club music normally saves the day.

You can't really go wrong with The Greatful Dead, although that's no where near current

So I've been thinking about this and decided to type "Best album of the decade" into Youtube and just clicked a random video and hear the argument and the first video was this where like 4 different dudes just spit hot takes

I have no idea what kind of rep What Culture has because I don't watch them but I was surprised that I was somewhat familiar with a chunk of the ones mentioned---I was fully expecting to have not heard any of them.

I did, however, realize that I never did go back and listen to David Bowie's last album, which is a shame because I do like his older work. Probably need to give that a listen sooner and not later.

I don't know too much about the mainstream but I can say that the 2010s were a GREAT decade for doujin music

Taishi in particular had a meteoric rise after his 2000s work with CODE ZTS LABEL with his new compllege label and it's really hard to choose just a single album... I might pick the original "Phant" album. There's only three songs but you get a showcase from the entire Holy Trinity of Trance: Taishi, zts, and Nhato. "bluefieldcreator" might be Taishi's magnum opus (others might disagree) and "freeflakes" is a great entry from zts, my all-time favorite doujin artist.

zts didn't have an album I'd pick this decade, which is fine since his late 2000s work is enough to pack an entire career, but his work in Umineko is still untouched to this day. He also made some absolute bangers for Mashiro Witch (rip), like blackstarlight and lingering affection:

He also did an absolutely stellar job with "point at infinity" for the Mashiro Witch x Umineko collab... I can't find a good rip on YouTube so I might upload it myself sometime.

Outside of the trance sphere, OPHANIL by KOSZONTO was probably the best doujin album I've come across in the 2010s. It's just... magic. The album is operatic so listen to the songs in order --- the whole thing is only 20mins or so and totally worth it.

‐-------------------

Not a "best album" but I wanted to give a shoutout to yogurtbox for "Tree of Knowledge", an OST for a fake PC-98 game, using the YM2608 soundfont. They were inspired to start the project after listening to Ryu Umemoto's brilliant EVE: BURST ERROR soundtrack and it really shows. I would be really interested to hear a followup to this after they have the time to sit down and play through the entirety of YU-NO, undoubtedly one of the best gaming OSTs ever.

Standouts from "Tree of Knowledge" are Opening, Schedule, and Evil Spirit. 'Opening' in particular reminds me a lot of YU-NO's opening:
