Default State of Emergency

if emergency isn't splet right.. get over it..

anyway.. im about 3 seconds away from bashing my comuter because i can't delete a certain file, and i have tried everything...

I've been here
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Oper...3.html#9604245

i've tried changing the ownership of the file.. when i right click it, and select properties nothing happens...

I've tried deleting through dos, nothing.. it says, its in use by another program.. blah blah blah..

I've tried bypassing sending it to the recyling bin, still nothing..

I've tried a program called "zap", which is supposed to be able to delete any file, even if its in association or being used by other things..

I tried clearing my cache.. still noting [/sarcasm]

The only thing i haven't tried is booting in safe mode, and deleteing it through dos there.. or regular deleting in dos mode.. I will go try those now.. figured i would post this first...

Please someone have an alternative for me.. It's so annoying..

btw the file in question is a .avi file I made back when I had my web cam.. i deleted the software for the webcam, and got rid of it.. but I can't get rid of this file..

Im out of options.. and its driving me insane..

I've had a couple of files do that to me. If the safe mode doesn't work I'd say open task manager and end all processes that DON'T say "SYSTEM". I'm pretty sure ending one of those would really mess up the computer.

...safe mode boots your computer with only the processes needed to run windows. In other words, no programs at all are running.

And as other people said, safe mode is your answer 87x. No need to mess around in DOS.

Well, I can see why you'd want that nearly 600 meg file gone. From my experience with these stupid files I found that there's no real way to delete them until the computer decides to let go. Keep moving it around if you can. This sometimes happens to me even on XP after I download a file... I even close the download program and can clearly run the file from its location, but if I try to rename it or move it Windows gets pissed off.

you should check for viruses, but I don't think that's it. I've seen it happen to other people too...I'm pretty sure it's just windows XP being completely retarded (only seen it happen on XP)

This may sound stupid, but when something won't delete for me, I just drag is physically to the recycle bin and it usually works. You know what else ALWAYS works for me? Set up a network, with say a laptop, or if you are already connected through LAN, just go to another computer, enter your files through the network, and delete it through the other computer. I does it no questions asked. I've been screwed over several times beause of this, it doesn't even move it to the recycle bin. Good luck, may the horse be with you.

if u can copy the file to a disc or zip drive, do that and make backups of all important files and programs and if u are really desprate to get rid of it and have appropriate backup discs, format your hard drive. When i had an uber-serious probelm running some programs where my comp crashed badly, i did this and havent had a problem since

wow, it's not a file-eating virus, it's just a stupid XP technicality. What kind of idiot would format his hard drive for that. lmao. Stop posting before you hurt yourself newb.

lol.. well.. i don't know how to setup a network between two cpmputers.. and i don't have another computer to network it with, so thas out of the question.. i haven't tried physically dragging it to the hard drive yet.. I will be sure to try that when i get home..

Another thing is that, if i remember correctly, if i try to open the file in dos, it says it cannot not be found.. don't quote me on that yet.. i will test that out too when i get home to confirm or rebut my thoughts.

It annoys me when admins post that they are locking the topic. I'm not talking about the final post explaining why but it annoys me when at the end you find the words "this topic is locked." I dunno why. :bulb:

in ur safe mode pic, it looks as tho DOS is misunderstanding you. try putting a _ instead of a space in there and see if that works. as it is, it looks like it thinks self is a directory and portrait is the file, when really it's both together as the name. dunno if that helps, but at least i tried

^Do you even know what you are talking about? "Self" is not a valid directory there, chief.

As for your problem, I've had stuff like that happen to me before as well...however, that was on my old computer, and I don't remember how I got rid of it, if I did at all...

Also, sophos sucks. Get Mcaffe. Best Virusscan out there.
