Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
Please do NOT post your Tier points in this thread. Post them in this thread instead.
[Introduction] Hello FFR Members! Welcome to the improved FFR ranking system for the top active players. We are currently working on the Tier Point system and we appreciate any suggestions and ideas you have. Thanks! Goal: The goal of the Tier Point system is to make a fair ranking of a player's overall ability to PA different types of files. We will make all of the decisions about how this system will be to reflect this goal. Our secondary goals are to encourage people to play files and improve their skill, and to be able to rank people of all skill levels from PAing 7s and 8s all the way up to SDGing 13s. The new Tier point system will work like this: First, each song will start with a 1-point requirement of simply passing the song. This is pretty easy, but we really just want to encourage people to play lots of different charts, even ones they might not be able to get good scores on. Note that the requirements for each given number of points will not be equally hard - this is intentional (see the FAQ). Then, each song will start with a 2-point requirement of an FC with very low PA - if you don't have enough skill to hit a song well, you shouldn't expect to get many points from it. From there, the requirements will gradually require better and better PA, until the highest requirement for a song is a AAA or blackflag. In general, songs that are harder to PA will have more requirements, and thus will be worth more points. Short and technically simple songs will generally go up to the AAA; long and technically complex songs (lots of color notes and bursts) will only go up to a blackflag. The distribution of your points will be different here than in the old system. Before, you would expect to have about the same number of points on each song, with your best scores getting more points (e.g. you might have a lot of 2/x scores, and a handful of 3/x). With this system you will have full points on the songs that are easy for you, some of the points on songs around your level, and only 1-2 points on songs that are too hard for you. This will give a better understanding of a player's abilities and skill level. [FAQ] (Read this list before asking any questions) Q: What are Tier Points? A: Tier Points are points that you get for getting good scores on certain songs in FFR. The number of Tier Points you have shows how good of a player you are overall, just like your AAA count and average rank. You can check how many Tier Points you have by going here. Q: Help! My Tier Points is NOT updating! A: Try going to your level rank page - that should update it. Q: Are you going to have multiple lists? A: No, this tends to just segregate people, and we want to be able to compare everyone together. Q: Wait, you're not going to keep the difficulty-level based requirements? Wasn't that a good system? A: There were some good things about it, but it really encouraged mashing. Before the difficulties were all decreased, mash FCing a high FGO could give you as many as 5-6 points, which would give a masher a huge advantage over someone of the same skill who couldn't mash well. We wanted to get rid of this, so in the new system mashing a song can only get you one extra point. Q: Why do the Tier Point requirements require FCing the song? Shouldn't they just be based on PA? A: We'd actually love to do this, but combo scoring ruins it. The combo is so much more important than PA right now, so lots of people have mashed scores with good combo but bad PA, and they can't improve them without getting at least that much combo. So going based on the PA in your best score would be really unfair to those people, since they'd be getting fewer points than they deserve. Q: Are you guys going to add bonuses? A: We are not sure if we want to add bonuses or not yet, but if we do they will start from a low number of AAAs to give people an incentive to actually play the game. Starting from too high a number makes it seem too hard to get to. Q: How many songs will be on the final list? A: Probably about 150-200, but maybe less or more. We're willing to have as many songs as we need for a good TP list. Q: How often will Tier Points be updated after this release? A: About once a month. Re: Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
The Community Section This is where everything community wise will be located. We really want to hear from you guys to see what you think about this system as we continue on through this project. Please do not be scared to ask us anything, we are human after all not gods! To help us get started with this project, I would like you guys to go under "Community Downloads" to start downloading two files. One will be the outline file which will tell you what you need to do. The other one will be the list of songs that we want you to choose from. This will make things a lot easier for you and for us! Once you have finished your outline, we would like you guys to PM it to WTF WRECKED since all the leaders have access to that account. We thank you in advance for supporting us! Please be sure to read everything before you post or get started with the project. [Community Downloads] Here is where you guys will get download links to things we provide you throughout this project! Please be sure to pay attention to this as we get further into this project. We will remind you whenever we add new links into this section! This will be divided into stages just to make things easier for us. Deadline: Submissions are now CLOSED! If for some reason we do not get enough outlines, we will end up using the list that we have already made to fill in the songs that we think should go in Tier Points. STAGE ONE (Selecting Tier Point Songs/Finalizing) ACCOMPLISHED! STAGE TWO (Tier Point Requirements/Finalizing) ACCOMPLISHED! [Community Suggestions] This is where all of the community questions/suggestions will go. We will respond to each question/suggestion with our thoughts to them throughly. If you disagree with our thoughts then feel free to respond to this thread but be warned, if you respond with any inappropriate behavior then we will NOT respond back to you. We want this thread to be a healthy zone for others. Suggestions igotrhythm: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...29&postcount=7 Reply: We agree with you! That is definitely something we want to remove out of this system. FFR community: REMOVE MARISA! Reply: Your wish is our command! Note: We will not respond to any more questions that has to do with the removal of songs. We as a community will handle that AFTER we compare the outlines and post the results. FFR community: BASE TIER POINTS OFF RAW SCORING! Reply: We disagreed at first until velocity said that we was going to make the scoreboard be based off raw scoring. Now we would LOVE to make Tier Points be based on Raw scoring. rushyrulz: http://www.flashflashrevolution.com/...5&postcount=98 Reply: I'm sure 99% of the community wants this to happen so hopefully, the staff will listen.

Re: Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
A suggestion for the new system: Get rid of the asterisks.
This actually serves an important function: Only one script has to be run to see if someone has met the requirement or not. The way it is now, the system is probably "did you get it? No? Okay, let's see if you came close enough for an asterisk." With this method, you either have a TP or you don't. This also allows the system to show accurate margins (how many more points one needs for the next TP). |

Re: Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
That's exactly the point, if you just look at the raw score of the best score someone has, some people will get the PA they deserve and some won't, and that's just not fair.
Recording the best raw score on each song is one of the ways to get rid of combo scoring, but the admins don't want to do it because it would require adding another column to the high score database (= a lot of work).

Re: Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
One of the main things that I like about ffr is that it uses combo scoring. Not that I love combo scoring, I suck at it and prefer raw, but we would prolly lose a buncha combo scoring players.

Re: Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
Have you tried "alter table" syntax, or regex find+replace?

Re: Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
Yeah, uh, I'm not actually an admin
The table's really big though, there's one entry for every user's high score on every song they've played. It's certainly not a quick task.

Re: Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
And there are like 5000 people that have played most songs in the game - like 99% of people on this site join and never get into it. Using the 99% estimate there are about 17000 people on this site who have played a significant # of songs (let's assume all 920-odd publics.) So computing raw score is equivalent to calculating
(perfects * 50) + (goods * 25) + (avs * 10) + (misses * -10) + (boos * -5) = 10 flops. 10 * 17000 * 925 = 157,250,000 flops. Suppose the other 1.68 million have played, on average, 5 songs. 10 * 5 * 1683000 = 84,150,000 flops Adding these results in 241,400,000 flops - so for a 24-hour downtime while we fix the list we'd require a computing speed of 2794 flop/s. I think the PS3s on the shelf are a tad faster than that. I probably grossly underestimated the numbers, but I don't think it's too far fetched.

Re: Completely Revised Official Tier Point System
I'm against having anything lower than 10's in the TP list. I like tier points because they've always been aimed at the elite, I don't want to have to play easier files. That's why my FC and AAA bars are so low.
