Should every person have the right to change their name when they turn 18 for free?
I had been thinking about this for a while mostly because it doesn't seem right that we don't even have the opportunity to name ourselves. In Michigan it costs $150 for the court filings and you must be fingerprinted if you are over 21. I don't believe that this seems very fair to a person who is unhappy with their name. Plus, names are getting more and obscure (North West, Hashtag Jameson and many more) that it only seems fair for everyone to have the right to change their name free of charge and without being fingerprinted.
What do you all think? |

My thought about this is that the person bearing the name has no say whatsoever about what they can be called, so I believe that every person should at least have the right to change their name and not have to pay for something that they might not have ever wanted.

If they really want to change their name, they shouldn't have an issue paying $150. Nothing is free. Time and energy went into any service or product. You reimburse the service provider for their time and energy in a payment of some sort.

No, it would probably be hard for me to get a job with the name Deadly. It's just something I've been thinking about for a while because of all these out of the blue names you see in the media.

Definitely not for free. The local and federal governments have to do work in order to change the name on official records. Also, a semi-large upfront fee doubles as a deterrent towards those who aren't serious about it. Obviously wealthier people can throw away the costs without thinking about it, but your average person does not want to accrue those costs without truly wanting to stick with the new name for the rest (or at least a majority) of their life.
I'm (hopefully) getting my legal name changed within the next year. It's going to cost me a fair bit, but it will be so worth it. Last edited by tosh; 01-27-2015 at 10:40 AM.. |

I wasn't planning on changing it, I just think people should be able to change their name for free once.

Think of the name change as you would a tattoo. Both are "fairly" permanent, and both require a good amount of physical work and resources to commit to. In general, when policy changes such as this are suggested, the highest priority to consider is its consequences and ramifications on society, NOT the freedom of choice it offers the people. All you can imagine is what a couple of teenagers might want, and you don't even consider what consequences this policy has if implemented.

changing your name early on is probably the best thing to do because as you go on in life you get more and more things under your name and you have to change -everything- which most people dont realize when getting a name change. also 150 is pretty much pocket change when you consider what you're doing

I second.
