It doesn't necessarily happen that fast. With computer components, for example, if you know which parts to pick, you can constantly have an incredible price/performance ratio and your machine will last you forever.

The main problem is buying an iPod in August. Why the hell would you do that? Apple always releases their new stuff in week 1 or 2 of September. Wait until then or you deserve to suffer for your stupidity.

Who the HELL needs 160GB of space for an MP3 Player of all things?!?!

I have ~400 songs on my comp, and my 1GB only holds ~175 of them so I could probably use to upgrade to a 4GB, maybe even an 8GB, but anything above that is just crazy. I just can't see how you'd need more than 8GB of songs to entertain you.
