Re: please recommend movies (specific type; read thread)
i tried watching both blade runner 2049 and 2001 and got bored. sorry x.x kept wondering when the action was happening, esp w/ 2001. that movie was visually epic but like what were all those long scenes of nothing???
watched the giver and i liked it. thanks for the rec! time to watch full metal jacket (sensing that dbp likes this kubrick guy) edit actually wait the giver reminded me of this one movie i thought of watching that i'll check out ps i still highly highly rec snowpiercer if you haven't watched it. fking awesome

Kubrick is great yes
2001: A Space Odyssey is required viewing and somewhat fits into what you were looking for

everyone loves Blade Runner but it basically takes out an entire half of the story, the book has two parallel story lines going on and a lot more stuff happening. I actually agree about Blade Runner being pretty boring and really getting a pass by being so visually stunning |

Re: please recommend movies (specific type; read thread)
I can see what you mean, Blade Runner (original) is more of a broader aesthetic experience as opposed to a plot-driven film
the movie presents a very sophisticated take of the future but it's largely visual and not the kind of movie where the emphasis is on... "things happening" --- this might sound weird but I generally don't like science-fiction or fantasy genres all that much so I don't have a lot more to offer. IDK if someone mentioned "Akira" but that's a beautiful film. The plot is really hard to follow but also not really that important to liking the movie I think EDIT: For the big stretch I think you could technically consider "Revolutionary Girl Utena" as post-apocalyptic (hell, the movie title's subscript is "ADOLESCENCE APOCALYPSE"), but the apocalyptic themes are pretty much subtext... just like most else about the show, lol. It's a deconstruction of German & French fairy tales and classical romance and examines the broken world of a patriarchal, hyper-masculine "paradise" Utena is a show/movie that you really have to put in work to get the most out of but if you're interested in long-form feminist narrative then there is plenty of great commentary to be made there

Re: please recommend movies (specific type; read thread)
The book makes the giver movie seem pretty lame
The author has other books that may or may not take place in the same universe, and they're pretty quick reads too

oh shoot I just realized my post sounds really passive aggressive, I'm sorry
I don't super like it and was trying to say that your opinion is valid and shared by a lot of people because of its narrative differences but I'm really bad at wording things |

Rewatched Amadeus last night. Such a good movie, love the way the music is edited in throughout.
