Re: Gravity
I wasn't expecting much from the trailers, but I've watched almost an hour of it while I've been on shift. It actually looks really good. And yeah, same here the IMAX shows are selling out (even on weekdays, and our imax seats ~460 people)

Re: Gravity
Boring visuals? You're joking, right? This film is so fucking visual, it's like a textbook example of the "show, don't tell" filmmaking methodology. It's all visual and it's all amazing. It's a testament to what can be done when a filmmaker keeps in mind that film is a VISUAL art form.
Anyway, my local IMAX, the Henry Ford Museum, isn't even showing it. It's showing at a bunch of FAKE IMAX locations around, but I'm pretty sure that the Henry Ford is the only one around southeast Michigan that projects legitimate 15perf 70mm onto an ENORMOUS screen. Most theaters that use the name "IMAX" are just a little bit bigger and project 2K digital at 16:9, but real IMAX uses a HGUE format film-- yes, REAL FILM on platters and everything-- to project (and a full-frame IMAX is 1.44:1, very fucking tall).

Re: Gravity
Yeah, real IMAX (film and all) is hard to come by since IMAX started mass-exporting their digital brand because of lower costs

Re: Gravity
He said the story looks boring, but the visuals look awesome.
I plan on seeing it soon enough but don't have an IMAX near me =/

Re: Gravity
probably why I won't go see it. They didn't show enough in the preview to peak my interest to the point of spending $15 on an IMAX ticket.

Re: Gravity
I just got back from the 3d IMAX (which wasn't a proper sized imax for some reason) and it was fusdkfjklsdhf intense. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are perfect for those roles.
100 million dollar budget and only 5 different faces in the entire film, one of which you only ever see like, 70% of... nuts. Last edited by midnghtraver; 10-9-2013 at 07:57 PM.. |

Re: Gravity
Weird formatting threw me off. I saw "kinda boring" and "visuals" on the next line and instantly raged out. My mistake.
I don't see how people could think the story is boring though. It's constant suspense as she scrambles to try to not die. @cedolad: like I said, I always go to Henry Ford Museum for IMAX, because it's the only one around here that projects actual IMAX film. I think there's one in Lansing and one in Flint or something too, but they're farther. There's a dome somewhere in Detroit too, but that's a dome. @midnightraver: IMDB credits only 2 on-screen actors. The other actors in the film are all voices only...

Re: Gravity
SO APPARENTLY
Warner Bros., the distributor of this fine feature, decided not to strike any IMAX film prints. Apparently, the only IMAX distribution they decided for was 2K digital, no better than any other standard digital projection's source. So all legitimate IMAX theaters out there are not showing the it. Henry Ford is but one of many being denied here.

Re: Gravity
Best movie released in the last couple of years. For me it got everything there is to get right...right. Awards wise not really the sort of film I expect the AMPAS to go for but no doubt it'll rack up a whole slew of nominations, including BD/BP.
